General theme seems to be that in relation to becoming a pilot, training is the same, based on the Marine speciality of CAS, I suspect some differences there. However, I think the biggest difference I have heard from Marines in relation to their aviation assets, is that their pilots are regarded as regular grunts because they go through the same basic training. Whether still true I do not know, last two years of travel restrictions have slowed down travel and interaction.

Not sure I've ever seen a B52 mentioned as CAS.

Not sure if these type of mission is true CAS, but these JDAMs drops do require precise guidance from drones or spotter.
I also recall similar missions performed by B-1 in defense of the Syrian town Kobani against ISIS.

It's more of a skill set of the pilots and crew, from being able to pick out the target, communicate with troops on the ground, and aiming the weapons, than anything to do with the actual aircraft.

Eh.... certain aircraft are more geared toward that than others. And the B52 isn't really.
As the post above stated, I do get it if the B52 is just loitering with smart bombs and someone else is marking the targets. But I kinda don't see that as CAS.

"Why not" is because every anti aircraft unit for a hundred miles around can pick you up when you're at 30Kft.

Close air support (CAS) is air action by fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft against hostile targets that are in close proximity to friendly forces and requires detailed integration of each air mission with the fire and movement of those forces.
CAS can be conducted at any place and time friendly forces are in close proximity to enemy forces. The word “close” does not imply a specific distance; rather, it is situational.
