Last F-14D Tomcat delivered 30 years ago

Sat Jul 23, 2022 2:20 am

It was 30 years ago on 20 July 1992, that the last new build F-14D Tomcat was delivered to the Navy. Tomcats Forever.

I started Tomcat!: The Grumman F-14 Story recently, and I stumbled into a YouTube channel by a former Tomcat RIO (Ward Carroll).

Such a damn shame we were denied so many more years of seeing the best that ever was fly the skies and ply the seas with a US flag.

The Tomcat has always been my favorite fighter. It was sad to see them go, in favor of the F-18. I think that they should have put it back into production, but, you can't save them all.

I was stationed at Miramar when the D first showed up in the fall of 1990. Actually I was working the weekend the first ones were delivered to VF-124. Saw them in the break, very cool.

Later on I went over to the VF-124 FRAMP building across from the hangars where they had one parked. No leaks, not a speak of dirt and that new airplane smell.

And if Dick Cheney is reading this, screw you.

I was at Miramar for a month or so that summer ('90), when VF-211 Checkmates and VF-24 Renegades had the A+ and VF-124 still had the A's. Worked on F110's (for the F-16N) and TF-30's for VF-124. The 110 was so much simpler and less cluttered (not to mention very clean) compared to the TF-30.

As I recall they still weren't letting the A+'s do afterburner takeoffs at that point.

Yeah, I was pissed at Cheney too when he cancelled the D.

I remember having to do high power engine runs outside 91-92 timeframe due to the hush houses having to be beefed up. Those F110's were a bit too much for them.

Cool. I remember being in the hush house for an F-14A full AB run (one engine of course) That was awesome, even being "just" a TF-30. The vibration resonance actually cut off your vocal chords so you couldn't talk.
