MQ-9 Reaper Gets Pratt Engine

Sun Sep 04, 2022 5:19 pm

Someone must have been asking for it. Pratt PT6 E-series engine installed and tested. 5 bladed prop, 33% increase in power.

Kind of surprised it took this long. I wonder who asked for it?

No idea. More power must mean a hit to range. Someone need to hulk a big load a short while?

OK... but versions of the TPE-331 can go up to 1650 hp. Are they just trying to offer engine options?

My guess?

Canada.

Why? Because Canada has been looking at a RPA for a while, and the MQ-9 Reaper is a contender under the Team SkyGuardian Canada partnership with CAE, MDA, and L3Harris.

Going with the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6 engine increases the Canadian content of their proposal, and would also help satisfy Industrial Regional Benefits requirements as well.

Does that engine also offer more range?
If so maybe its because the US no longer have bases in Afghanistan and still need to fly Reapers there to take out certain individuals like they did with Ayman Al-Zawahiri but if I remember correctly had to fly from the Arabian peninsula.
