F-15E part question.

Wed Sep 14, 2022 9:11 pm

Hello all,
feel a bit silly asking this question. Anyway here goes. At the rear of the F-15E in this photo there are 2 short rectangular "things." 1 on either side just outboard of the engines, but still on the air frame I think. They seem to have a metal sheen to them. They protrude from the grey frame. They are just inboard of the flaps. Would they be an APU exhaust? Or am I totally wrong?

They appear to be on the F-15C too. I think they same thing can be seen here. However, it is located further back just aft of the main wing's trailing edge. Still on the frame though. Here it looks grey. Small, kind of rectangular.

Also here on this F-15D. Appears to be in the same location as the F-15C. Same shape and position just aft of the main wing. Low on the fuselage.

Didn’t fly it, but guessing flare dispensers. There’s only one Jet Fuel Starter.

Don’t feel silly. It’s an interesting question.

Judging by the shape, I’m guessing a cooling vent to dump warm air overboard. Perhaps avionics cooling?

Is item 136 in the area you are referring to?

I think Lyle is correct. In walk-around photos, they are capped by removable red leads, indicating they are ports. In addition, several feet ahead of them, but in the same line of the fuselage, there are intake ports, also capped with red leads. So my guess is these are intake/exhaust pairs, on each side. Probably for cooling but could have other purposes as well.

Thanks all for the responses.
@GalaxyFlyer. Did not know there was only 1 JFS. Thanks for that.
@Lyle, bikerthai (Spit Murphy?) and Avatar cheers. What you all say makes sense to me. So I shall go with that.

My next door neighbor who is an aerospace engineer spoke with a former F-15C pilot and a retired F-15 crew chief. They both confirmed what you guys said yesterday I think. They said they were ECS exhaust ports. Again thankyou all for your help. Really appreciated and very interesting. The pilot actually contacted the crew chief to make sure as he was not 100% certain that he was right either.
Makes sense. I drive my car, but I take it to a mechanic to get it worked on.
