Has Anyone Driven Their Car In The Red Line?

I loooove the sounds of high pitched engines just as they are about to switch into the next gear. Usually the highest and best tone is in the red line of the motor, which is usually between 6000 and 8000 RPM's, although there are many exceptions. One time my grandpa drove my other grandpa's 92' Accord Sedan. The car was parked on the side of the expressway. He pulled onto the highway, but from 1st to 2nd gear, the RPM's only went up to 5000. But he somehow got the car out of gear, and in mid 2nd gear, the RPM's were at 7500! It was almost as good of a sound as a jet engine!!! Have any of you drove your cars into or above ther red line?

Close to. My car red-lines at 6500. I've taking it to 6000. But I've reved it to the red-line.

I'm wondering too how long my transmision will last

When you're learning how to drive a stick, you drive it into the red a lot...example...I was trying to shift from fourth to fifth and accidentally put it into third...goin about 65...you can imagine how loud that was. I've gotten it up to about 4000 rpm, but nothing more on purpose...

My school bus driver does the red line quite often, which is 4000 rpm   and the bus starts rattling lol          

Personally, I DO not drive like that

I love the sound of the engine when in the red. My car red line is 8000 rpm, I often drive at 7500.

I regularly push my car to the limit, however.. maximum power is not always achieved through more revs.. look at saab they put out max power between 2 and 3 thousand rpm..

LOL! It's not a matter of how long the TRANSMISSION will last if you redline the ENGINE of your car. If you redline the engine too much, it will blow. That is why cars with tachometers have the red area beyond, say, 5,000 rpm...to indicate that area as being a dangerous, unhealthy rpm level for the engine.

No, I've never redlined my engine. I love the sound of a high rev, but not enough to risk blowing it! Maybe if I had a Ferrari or a Porsche...

Hondas you can redline frequently as they use the V-TEC variable valve technology and their engine are designed to go up to 8K rpm, its normal as the second stage kicks in over 5k and goes on punching till 8k or even 8.5k

My Honda Civic redlines at 7000 rpm, it has a rev limiter so I it gets to the redline then just stays there. My car has VTEC also It doesnt feel any different when it kicks in but it just sounds good. When I first got my car I would constantly floor it, but now its just got boring doing that so now I just floor it every once in awhile.

All the time, sometimes not on purpose. I used to have a civic and sometimes when passing i forgot to watch the tach and would hit the rev limiter which would cut the engine out, i think it was 6500rpm. Any of the newer cars have a rev limiter to prevent you from blowing your engine up. Most people don't realize that if you want to get any power out of those little 4 bangers you need to rev them up to at least 4000rpm.

I got my tiny piece of sh*t Honda 1.5L CRX up to 100 miles per hour (160 km/h) but it didn't red line. I usually cruise at 80 mph which is about 4000 rpm and the engine sound wound up enough. I hate this car. I hope I kill it some day so I can get rid of it.

Hey guys speaking of the engines, I'm going to be driving soon, and does anybody know who has a good exhaust system for the car? Since I love the sound of high revs, too, I think an exhaust system would be benefitial to me. Share your comments

I redlined the S600 last nite in the TYS area... that was unreal! i was glued to my seat.. See it is an automatic, but it has this thing on it where u can kind of make it manual.. it's wierd... i've never seen it on any other car...

Yup, most cars have rev limiters to keep teenaged sons from blowing the motors on their parents cars... which is a good thing.

all of our cars have automatics... some autoshifters are pretty good and let you run it up pretty close to the redline. but for the most part these engines can run at high RPMs for a sustained period w/o a problem.

Unfortunately most 4 cylinders sound boomy and harsh... but surprisingly not my Camry... 1987 2.0L 4Cyl (3S-FE... yes you know you are a car freak when you know the model number of the engine in your car.) But it has a fairly nice sounding exhaust note and engine sound. it begs to be pushed every now and then.

A transmission does not suffer from red-lining engine. Engine (and mostly distribution: valves, cams and so) does. You may get a premature old engine by driving continuously that way, loosing vaste compression capacities (and thus significant power), burning oil, increasing fuel consumption and even working at higher temperatures. On the other hand, it burns deposits on the spark plugs, piston heads and exhaust valves, so it is not bad to do it some times every while.
As for the American conception of 4-cyls., it is not true that they need to be very revolutioned to be good. Hondas V-TEC and similar small japs are exceptions. I used to have a european 4-cyl. 2.0L and was able to accelerate very well, very fast and without vibrations on 5th gear from 1.000 rpm.
My newer car, a BMW M-3 E-30, gives 200 HP (DIN; =225 SAE aprox) from only 2.3L. Its red line is 7.200 rpm, and the exhaust is MUSIC all range, but best sound is 4.000/4.500 rpm floor gas. I redline it some three or four times, once every one or two weeks, in a road with a 5 kms (3 1/8 mile) tunnel, stereo off, windows down...: hair-raising!!!. About twice a year, I go rally it to a mountain road with many small curves. The speed is not very high, the revs go high, and the excitement is extra-terrestrial.
She is 190.000 kms old (110.000 miles), but works like a swiss clock, starts always the first time no matter how cold outside, and I do not need to add one drop of oil, because does not burn any, although I change it every 15.000 kms (9.400 miles)
My newest car is diesel, and although it performs good 107 HP DIN from just 4cyl, 1.9L turbo, it is not worth to rev it above 3.500 rpm. Anyway, many "pretended" sporty gasoline ones would like to accelerate as nice as my turbodiesel, when I drive it between 1.500 and 3.500 rpm.
