Olympics And Tennis....

Wed Sep 13, 2000 8:13 pm

Hello Mark and others! ( BTW Mark that's good news about the digital T.V., I envy you!)

Mark brought up a good point in his last post to my US Open thread. It was about whether pro tennis players should play in the Olympics. I admit that I had never thought of it before and now that I have I must say that I think that they should not be allowed to play. The Olympics are supposed to be for amateurs not professionals and I am wondering how it came about to let the pro tennis players compete in them. (I think that they let pro basketball players compete also.)
The Olympic committee must have given them some sort of dispensation but I don't remember hearing about it. Any thoughts, comments, or answers?

Hi, Dale. Yes ,this question remains unanswered in my mind. On one hand I think only amateurs should compete in the Olympics. But then I think about the track and field stars. Some of them are millionaires, even though they are "amateurs"

If I had to jump off the fence and make my mind up (very rare), I would say that tennis should not be included. I would miss it though.

Besides, who actually remembers the Olympic Tennis gold medal winners? I know I have to think very hard to come up with the correct names.

BTW, Dale, I can't wait for the games to start. I really can't. Thanks, I am gonna really enjoy the freedom digital gives me.

Regards
Mark.

I don't remember all the winners, but they included Steffi Graf in '88, Jennifer Capriati in '92, and Andre Agassi and Lindsay Davenport in '96, if I remember correctly. I think the games should be open to anyone who meets the qualifications, because there is no way to standardize who is or is not "professional" across the board for each sport, or from nation to nation. The old Soviet and East German athletes were professional in every way accept for the financial support, which was 100% governmental. When the "modern" games were started, they were limited to "amateurs", according to numerous reports, chiefly for the purpose of excluding the lower classes so that only the elite could compete.
I'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.

Hi, Dale.

The tennis results are hard to find, but I know Venus Williams is in the 3rd round. Davenport had withdrawn and returned to California with a foot injury (may be out for the rest of the season)

Rafter, Hewitt, Todd Martin   Henman, Rusedski are all out. Safin is out also!! Keurten is having a nice rum though.

It's strange, Dale. I am having a tennis feast. They are showing 2 hours (live) per day. But, they only show one match and never give any other scores. It's a fantastic stadium they have in Sydney.

Regards

Mark
