Would You Eat Biotec Food Products?

Wed Sep 20, 2000 6:52 am

Would you or would you not eat genetically engineered food?

Personally I see no problem with taking two types of plants and cross breeding them and eating the result. Why are all the eco-terrorists pissed off about this?

I admit I'm ignorant on the subject. Is there more to it?

The eco-terrorists are concerned that future processed food products will contain genetically-modified ingredients, and that people with food allergies won't be aware that the genes from the food they're allergic to have been spliced into something else, which may cause them to have allergic reactions. Also, there is concern (not based on any scientific evidence) that the general effects of GM food on the body are unknown and could be harmful.
An unexamined life isn't worth living.

Forget the genetically modified corn-based products from Taco Hell, perhaps this is the type of food that will finally make you lust for boobies.

I hate the idea of "franken-foods". No one knows the long or even short term effects possible from eating this type of produce. Adding toad genes to a tomato plant to make it tastier or resist bugs is playing "God" so to speak. Imagine, for some reason, a certain type of bug gets the toads gene in it from eating the tomato then it mutates into god only knows what.

Does everyone remember Mad Cow (Bovine Spongivore Encephalitis) disease that wiped out Britains beef industry and killed a number of people (and more to come one would presume) by that particular countries practice of feeding their vegetarian ruminants (cows, sheep etc) the boiled and ground up remains of themselves?

Does anyone remember the so-called safe use of DDT as a pesticide that caused widespread birth defects? I am not against progress or GMF foods. I simply don't believe anymore what I am told about it. We had one government advisor suggest that "Well, so far no one has been able to prove that these foods do cause allergies or problems." In other words nothing has been proven.

Affects on humans aside, there was test in WA on GM cotton plants. The test site was abandoned as the plants they grew were so pest and drought resistant they proved that if released in the wild they would spread like weeds and destroy the natural environment.

Perhaps that tacky movie "Attack of the Killer tomatoes" my turn out to be some sort of weird half truth.
