Top Rock-n-Roll Songs

Sun Oct 01, 2000 2:59 pm

Let me just open by saying that if your idea of music is NSYNC, Eminem, or Allanis Morissette, then this post is definitely NOT for you.
I'm talking about REAL music. The original stuff....the stuff that has withstood the test of time...the stuff that's not "trendy".....in other words....GOOD music....and almost certainly released before 1990. I guess few people under the age of 25 or even 30 will have much to say about this post...unless you happen to like the stuff your parents listened to.
Anyway, having said that, what are your votes for the all time best rock-n-roll songs? Here are my votes, broken down by era in no particular order.

1965-1975:

Rolling Stones "Gimme Shelter"
Moody Blues "Ride My See-Saw"
Led Zeppelin "D'yer Maker"
Bob Dylan "Positively Fourth Street"
Yes "Roundabout"
Simon and Garfunkel "I Am A Rock"
Chicago "Feeling Stronger Every Day"
The Who "Pinball Wizard"
Badfinger "Day After Day"
Bobby Fuller Four "Fool Of Love"
Eagles "Lyin' Eyes"
Derek+The Dominoes "Layla"
CCR "Green River"
Rod Stewart "Mandolin Wind"

1976-1985

John Cougar Mellencamp "Pink Houses"
U2 "Pride In The Name Of Love"
Steve Miller "Jet Airliner"
Bob Seger "Night Moves"
Heart "Magic Man"
Fleetwood mac "The Chain"
Bob Welch "Ebony Eyes"
Jackson Brown "Running On Empty"
Dire Straits "Money For Nothing"
Rush "Limelight"
Journey "Wheel In The Sky"
Foreigner "Double Vision"
Bruce Springsteen "Born In The USA"

1986-1991

U2 "With Or Without You"
Tom Petty "You And I Will Meet Again"
Damn Yankees "Runaway"
Nelson "After The Rain"
Guns And Roses "Paradise City"
Van Halen "Dreams"
Def Leppard "Photograph"
The Outfield "Voices of Babylon"

You have some good selections, but there is a special place in my heart for Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall part II." The song was at number 1 on the charts in the US when I was born in March 1980.

Just about anythign by the beatles, stones, doors, who, and pink floyd for the 60's - 70's.

U2 is definitely there for the 80's. Them and the Cure and Def Leppard were about the only good thing to come out of the 80's. Hair metal just isn't the most timeless thing.

there are some great songs to come out of the 90's. let us not forget smells like teen spirit. smashing pumpkins "1979" should be included in there somewhere.

You know, I'm going to have to add in Metallica - Master of Puppets.

Its not really hair metal, just very powerful rock-n-roll.

It has been voted many times to be the best Metallica song (usually getting over 20% of the votes - they have 100+ songs). The song is an amazing musical work that has survived to still be one of the best, 15 years after its creation, and it will most likely continue to hold that position for quite some time.

Hey, I'm 18...

Mon Oct 02, 2000 4:18 am

...and I love REAL music. While I do like some new stuff, I think most of the music produced nowadays is total ****. Thank god some of the old bands still exist...

Anyway, here are my votes (sorry if the songs aren't credited to their original artists, I'm not that sure about the stuff even if I like the music).

Well OK, all of these aren't that special, but just good:

Rolling Stones - Satisfaction, You Got Me Rockin', etc.
CCR - Up Around the Bend, etc.
Van Halen - Why Can't This Be Love, Dreams etc.

Bob Seger - Old Time Rock and Roll (for telling the truth   )

Box Tops - The Letter is good especially because of another truth: "Gimme a ticket for an aeroplane, ain't got time to take a fast train."

And many more.

The only problem I have with this is that I have trouble meeting girls since I *hate* the music (and mostly idiot people) in discos...

Hi. My name is Louis. I'm 23 years old and I'm...a Rockoholic! Yes, it's great to see some fellow rockers like myself. I grew up with this music and I've stayed true and loyal to it all these years. Give me Ozzy Osbourne, Poison, Great White, Montle Crue, Skid Row and Van Halen any day over Back Street Bitches and N'Stink.

I'm probably the biggest Van Halen fan around. I also love David Lee Roth. Hey, Matt, you forgot to add "Yankee Rose" on your list. That's a classic! You could make a list with just Van Halen and Ozzy alone

Ozzy: Miracle Man, You Can't Kill Rock-n-Roll, Crazy Babies, Shot in the Dark, Flying High Again, Bark at the Moon, No More Tears, list goes on and on...

Van Halen: Jump, Panama, Unchained, Sinner's Swing, Poundcake, Amsterdam, Top Jimmy, Hot for Teacher, Girl You Really Got Me, Feel So Good...this just scratches the surface.

It's amazing what these artists did, but what's even more amazing is how this genre has just disappeared without a trace today.

Keep Rockn',

Louis

P.S. Killjoy, cool nick!

Killjoy, you're so right. "The Letter" by the Box Tops is a fantastic song. How did I forget such a great tune?

"Sunny Afternoon" The Kinks. I love it.

Skynard: Sweet Home Alabama
Bob Seger: Old time rock and roll
Cream: Crossroads
Creedence Clearwater Revival: Fortunate Son
Kingsman: Louie, Louie
Eric Clapton: White Room
Rolling Stones: Jumpin' Jack Flash
Norman Greenbaum: Spirit In The Sky

My dad is responsible for introducing me to most of this old music. I enjoy this and modern bands such as Limp Bizkit, KoRn, Stroke 9, Perfect Circle, Lunatic Calm, Creed, Staind, Goo Goo Dolls, and Matchbox 20.
