Your Favorite Classic Car

Sat Apr 28, 2001 8:01 am

The question is simple. If you had a few bucks to buy and/or fix up an older car for fun what would it be?

Here is my long list... later I will find some pics too.
1970-71 Plymouth 'Cuda convertible
1966-1970 Volvo P1800 coupe
1965-66 Dart GT convertible with the 273ci V8
1967-69 Plymouth Baracuda Fastback, preferable with a 340ci V8
1970-1978 Datsun 240/260/280Z
1979-1982 Datsun 280ZX
1985 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE
ANY Chrysler 300 letter car... most gorgeous car ever made

Well I cannot think of anymore, but this is a good list to start from.

I love 70's AMC cars only because there like the freaks of the automotive industry.

A mint Pacer, Gremlin or Javelin would really float my boat..

but in my old age (32) I've been leaning more towards European classics..Like a late 60's Porscha 911 or 912.

I also like Volvo P1800..

I forgot about the 65-69 Chevy Corvair... very sharp looking car. The coke bottle shape of many late 60's cars was really something. But then I am also a dyed in the wool Mopar fan too, so I find it hard to be really enthusiatistic about cars that are not Mopars.

Any of you watch "My Classic Car" on TNN or Speedvision?

Quite some time ago, I walked into a news agency and saw a copy of Classic and Sportscar on the rack and on the cover was a picture of an NSU Ro80 and a Citroën DS21. In that split second I made up my mind that one day I would own both. As The Ro80 was going to be a lot harder to find than a DS, I set about locating as many of the revolutionary rotary engined cars as I could. It was not an easy task. They were extremely rare in South Africa, but as luck would have it, I came across one completely by chance on the way home from work one day. A week later she was mine - 39 000 original miles on the clock, but alas with a horrid Ford 2 liter V4 under the hood. I drove it like that for a while, but eventually took it out and installed a Mazda rotary. Certain engineering obstacles got the better of me and a fellow NSU owner then came to my rescue and we converted the car back to original spec with a rebuilt Wankel engine. I drove the car periodically for 7 years and then stripped it for a quick respray in 1995. Unfortunately it has remained in a kit of parts ever since, but hopefully she will grace the roads again in the not too distant future.

My 1970 NSU Ro80 with factory optional Fuchs alloy wheels

Starship- Gorgeous car you have there. You really need to get that back together again. It would be a shame to not see it run again!

Mx5Boy- My roomate had a 1976 Fiat Spyder, painted in an ugly mousy silver. It really needed somebody who had the time to give it a little tender loving car. A great fixer upper. Unfortunately it blew a rod on Interstate 10 between Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona.
