Two Utah Towns Consider 'U.N.-free Zones'

Two Utah towns consider 'U.N.-free zones'
By Andrea Billups
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Two rural Utah towns may put themselves on the national map by passing resolutions declaring U.N.-free zones.
Town councils in La Verkin, population about 2,000, and Virgin, home to nearly 400, plan to put to votes next month ordinances that declare the United Nations unwelcome within their town limits.
While left-leaning locales such as Berkeley, Calif., and Takoma Park, Md., have declared their towns nuclear-free zones, the Utah laws would be the first in the nation where towns have voted to give the United Nations the heave-ho.
La Verkin Mayor Dan Howard hopes his town's initiative will inspire other cities where residents oppose the United Nations' global agenda.
"We've been pushed far enough and long enough," Mr. Howard told the Salt Lake Tribune. "We're tired of marching to the U.N. agenda. Maybe La Verkin is the crucible to get the rest of the cities and the national government to listen."
The proposed anti-U.N. laws, set for a vote next month, are not the first to draw attention to the two towns, whose residents have distinguished themselves as freedom-loving, independence-declaring folk.
Last year, Virgin council members approved a law requiring each head of household in the town to own a gun. La Verkin council members last week approved a resolution reiterating the town's steadfast support of the Second Amendment.
Both town councils considered the U.N.-opposition measures after listening to a speech last week by the father of court-martialed Army medic Michael New about his son's treatment by the U.S. military. Mr. New refused to wear the U.N. insignia and beret while working as a member of a peacekeeping force in Macedonia. He received a bad-conduct discharge from the service but became the darling of conservatives around the nation who opposed what they described as the United Nations' one-world-government philosophy.
Mr. New's father, Daniel New, a Christian missionary who raised seven home-schooled children with his wife, said he planned to speak out about anti-U.N. ordinances in towns in Washington and New Mexico in the coming months, said reports published in the St. George Spectrum.
The proposed laws call for a ban on using town money to aid the United Nations. They also ban the U.N. symbol on town property and protect residents from "involuntary servitude" in U.N. peacekeeping details. Residents who support the United Nations must post signs that read: "United Nations work conducted here."
Noelle Higbee, Virgin town clerk, said the town's five-member council discussed the resolution at its most recent meeting but tabled it until the July 19 meeting to seek more public input. Most of the people who attended the meeting supported its passage, she said, declining to comment on her own views of the measure.
Virgin Mayor Jay Lee told those who attended Thursday's town council meeting that when he considered the ordinance, he concluded that the United Nations already had control of two of the four things needed for a global government, the Spectrum reported.
"The United Nations control finances and fuel," Mr. Lee said. "All they need to control now is food and firearms."
La Verkin Town Manager Douglas Wilson said the council supports the measure, although it has created little fanfare among the mostly Mormon residents.
"We've had one negative response from the community and two from outside," he said. "Most of the interest and publicity has been from outside of town."
A U.N. spokesman had no comment on the towns' proposed actions.
La Verkin council members, looking to celebrate a patriotic holiday appropriately, have called a special July 4 session to vote on the proposed ordinance.
La Verkin town Councilman Al Snow, who works as director of engineering at a Utah company, says he has become involved in the anti-U.N. campaign to protect the rights of his children. Others who live in the West should take note of the region's significant U.N. presence, he said.
"The U.N. is trying to get involved in too much of our lives. We live in the West and we see parks now where part of the fees that they earn goes to the U.N. because it is biosphere," he said. "Eighty-three percent of our state's land is federal land, and they have made deals with the U.N. to do certain things and have not even considered the people who live here.
"I can see our country's sovereignty slowly slipping away," he said. "I believe in the power of the people, and the people need to make sure that the U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land."
La Verkin, founded in 1891, is located about 45 minutes from Zion National Park. Virgin, founded in 1858, adjoins La Verkin and is located along the Virgin River.
---------------------------------

I say GOOD FOR THEM! Hopefully more and more communities will be catching on to this anti-UN movement and force Congress to slow down our participation in UN globalization and bending over for the UN.

This sounds like that tv movie comedy "Civil War" or something, when the governor of Utah didn't allow any immigrants into the state.

Those people are crazy extremists!
If they love their 'freedom' so much why don't they let the UN do what it need's to? The UN probably does practically nothing in that area anyway! What is it that these people feel threatened by? THERE'S NOTHING THERE!
Requiring each household to have have a gun, whoa, that's 'freedom' for you! If this so called 'freedom' thing is so great, why don't they just allow people to make that decision for themselves?
Yeah right, the US's sovereignty is slipping away, it looks to me like they're trying to give their corporations control over other sovereign nations with all this free trade business! The 'US losing sovereignty' and free trade just don't fit together.(don't be thinking that I'm against free trade) The UN organization is a far cry from from a bunch of paranoid religious fanatics in Utah!

I guess that's enough ranting for now.

Good for them.....

The UN has it's place but is rapidly trying to grow bigger then it's britches...

They need to be taken down a notch.

This won't change much....but even the ocean started as a raindrop.....

And I thought the French were the ones arrogant and with an attitude. The comments that you far right supporters makes me laugh all the time "You damn liberal" It never ceases to amaze me on how repetitve you are becoming. I wonder if one of you is Trent Lott in disguise? (I'm an Independent by the way.)

Once and for all, Shut UP An-225. You have nothing better to say half the time and are as mature as Kermit the Frog half the time - never accepting people for WHO they are, but infact WHAT (in terms of what they believe and want for their nation) they are.

There's prejudice for you.

If these towns wish to do these things, LET THEM. This is a republic and they VOTED for them.

I forgot to add: Hairyass and N400QX-maybe those folks there have seen too many black helicoptors flying around their towns. I mean, after all, those towns, and their right-wing extremists (all of them, it sounds like), are just such an important focal point of U.S. and world events.

As for you two, you guys are paranoid extremists yourself, who have no sense of intelligence whatsoever. I think you both should move there. You'd feel right at home with all those gun-toting, redneck survivalists. ROTFLMAO.

So, even banning the symbol? Sounds like a bunch of right-wing rednecks to me.

"Residents who support the United Nations must post signs that read: "United Nations work conducted here."

Doesn't it sound like Hitler and the Jews? Why not evict all colors next? After all, they do have the right to do whatever they want to do.

The paranoia of a section of society of the most powerful nation on Earth, (check the irony-if you can), is fast becoming a free comedy show for the rest of us.
Do these people miss the cold war so much that they now have to invent new perceived threats?
More irony-Europeans are not this paranoid, and they've had the actual destruction of war on their territory in living memory. My parents can remember being bombed by the Luftwaffe.
So why do these safe, secure folk feel so threatened? Of course your lovely Nazi/KKK/White Supremists love all this.
Not that it really matters, with all of the worlds REAL problems, what a bunch of bible-thumping, inbred, shitkickers think.
I can just imagine these guys, thumbless, heavybrowed, eyes real close together, (so much so, the left eye is the right socket and visa-versa), saying 'I belive gawd made me in one daayyy'. Hmmm, looks like he rushed it!
Then a similar woman turns up, 'this is ma wife and ma sister'.
What do they think they'd do if these mythical Area-51 based, black UN helicopter gunships they reckon will take over the US, actually turned up? Point their shotgun at it and say 'you ain't from around here are yer boyyy?'

Who says I'm not paranoid?
If these people want to make a statement that they believe their country is throwing away its independence to the UN, let them. In fact, I think they have a valid point (though I would no as far as they have).
Last time I checked the US were more or less a democracy (less than optimum but more than most of the world) which makes this a decision supported by the majority of the people in these towns (in theory at least, but given the size of the towns, most likely true, especially since everyone has a gun...).
I wish I were flying

Being a bit more serious, isn't it weird that a few members of US society have invented this 'One World Goverment Plot' fairytale?
For sure the world is a smaller place in many ways. Here's how;
Safe, reliable, fast air transport, largely developed by - the USA!
The Internet, developed by - The USA!
The photos showing Earth as a small oasis in space, taken by - US Apollo Astronauts!
The UN, largely set up by, dominated by and based in - the USA!
Let's also not forget that most of the anti UN nuts also see it as part of 'a worldwide Jewish plot'.
Now what or who does that remind you of?

So predictable. So predictable... Conservative post, liberal name-calling fest. Can't you liberals actually engage in a debate without resorting to name-calling and sterotyping? Hmm...? Not all conservatives are red-necks, and not all red-necks are conservatives. Don't forget, Bill Clinton drove an El Camino with astroturf in the back (need I say what the astroturf was for) when he was young, so be careful of how you generalize. You might be insulting the future leader of your party.

We've got all the buzz words in this story:

*Utah
*Mormons
*home-schooling
*"one-world government"
*Christian missionary

I find it delicious irony that a story about Virgin(!), Utah is being printed in the Washington Times, a paper owned by the Rev. Sun-Myung Moon, who BTW believes that he and his wife are the new Messiah/Adam and Eve all rolled up into one. Perhaps both the Moonies and the Mormons should band together and form a really, really paranoid religion! The New M & M's!

Personally I'm glad they're speaking up and showing America and the world just how friggin ignorant and paranoid some of these people are. Catch the freak show...only in America folks!

Well, I'm somewhat critical of the UN for its fervently anti-Israel themes and actions (but thats what you get with an organization of like 30 Islamic countries and 1 Jewish one), but this is absolutely ridiculous.

It's also interesting however, how different people's perspectives are around the world. Many of our fellow world citizens despise the US for its supposed overreaching, arrogant, expansionist policies, while some right here in the nation think the US is getting too weak and losing its own soverignty.

pretty different.

The UN is a largely ineffectual organization that spends billions of dollars to pursue the fleeting ideal of global harmony and peace. While, it has had some successes, (trying to think of them), the UN would be far better as a smaller, more limited organization to promote global diplomacy and mediate conflicts between countries with unbiased arbitration. The peacekeeping force does anything but keep peace and the security counsel has only led to increase global insecurity (as witnessed by the hundreds of UN resolutions condemning Israel which terrorists use as carte blanche for their attacks against the state).

So, while I condemn the actions of our isolationist paranoid brothers in Utah, I am not all against their cause.

I don't believe in government sponsored handouts. I believe in working for a living. I'm going to speak my mind and I don't give a rats ass about damaging someones "self esteem". I play baseball to win. I don't care what kind of wars were fought 100, 200, 300 years ago, but my pasty white posterior now sits on sovereign USA soil. Matt D, have you ever given someone else a gift? Don't you feel happier and prouder about yourself when you make someone else's life a little better? Matt, what you have is not a virtue, it's a mental illness. A lack of a social conscience is not something that you are born with, and it isn't something you are meant to live with. My training in psychology has taught me that most people with illnesses don't realize it. I think you don't realize when sort of sickness you have. I know of several drugs that would help you, but you need to want to help yourself first.

You must be right. I had no idea that my IQ was more than one (plural....as in IQs)

I always thought that I had only one IQ.

And boy it must be a diminutive one at that if I went almost 28 years and didn't even know that I had multiple IQ's.

Cool.

RE: Two Utah Towns Consider 'U.N.-free Zones'

Actually, I was continuing this sentence:

"You can call me a redneck all you want, but us rednecks have the lowest divorce and crime rates and strongest family values of just about any other section of society."

As in 'You (plural)". I know it's difficult for someone who's mother tongue isn't English, but please try and keep up.

Matt, I know you probably don't want to listen to someone you've never met, but a lack of a social conscience is a disease, not a political view. You should seek professional help.

Matt, for someone who likes to keep to himself, you sure have a big mouth.

Are, uh, you one of these lone-wolf survivalists, who sees too many black helicoptors near his house? Is that why you're so paranoid?

I think you'd be right at home in those idiot towns in Utah.
