This Program Has Performed An Illegal Operation

Fri Sep 28, 2001 7:28 pm

This week when I surf this forum, I keep on getting this message and the windows keep shutting down once in a very very short while. Sometimes it takes a few pages before the window closes, sometimes it takes less. I have to reopen the internet explorer for about 7-8 times if I want to read 10 messages.

Does anyone has this problem too ? How can I do about it ?

Thanks !

I had a similar problem some time ago.
I'm using MS IE 5.5. and WINDOWS ME. I couldn't do anything about it - I guess it's a bug.

Since I use ME I have recieved queer error messages very often - usually I ignore them, press a button or restart.

I've got that problem too. But I've got a way not to keep opening the Explorer over and over again.
When it shows the message, click okay and if will go to another message. just click some where else on the screen and it will go down the screen. Continue to surf and when you'll done, bring it back up and click okay.

But I am constantly getting this problem, nearly 2 per minute. This thing only happens when I use the forum. It doensn't happen when I surf other pages.

This thing is getting very irritating. I have already typed this post for 3 times. Everytime I press the 'post' button, the message appears again. (hope that this message will succeed). I would be sO SO SO SO SO grateful if anyone can help me solve this problem !!

I'd call the Police and report the crime.

P.S. If you have an unstable system, until you've figured it out, make sure you copy your text into Notepad or the clipboard before trying to post it, so that you can easily recover.

Sounds like you may have a virus that you don't know about. I was having all sorts of problems too and that turned out to be the reason. Heres a great online scanner that picked out the virus that I had:

It sounds like the win.mtx virus - a type of worm virus. Try and download a virus scanner update - if it doesn't let you do this then you probably have that virus (as it blocks access to virus cleaning websites). However, it doesn't block access to www.tucows.com, and you can get the downloads from there.

Sounds like you're using an inferior system. Go with Mac  Smile. Although I run Win2k and 98SE on my computers, I still miss the good ol' days of running Macs.

I had those problems when I was running IE6. I got rid of it and with 5.5 SP2 I have very few problems.

what do you expect? We're all using IE....crummy program...one of the most unstable ever...does anybody who's upgraded to 5.5 recommend it over 5.0?

Actually, ever since I re-formated my HD after catching a virus I have not encountered a single problem with IE5.5. Before it would crash all the time, I would get the hotmail problem you have described an now its 100% solid.

Illegal operation is a generic windows bug. Even my old computer with Windows 95 has it!

Windows sucks since MS has a near-monopoly on the operating system market, so they have no incentive to make it good.

Man, I miss those good ol' Macs.
