No, I Don't Have One Message Waiting For Me!

Fri Nov 30, 2001 2:15 pm

Are you guys sick of this dumb add that's been popping up all the time on airliners.net?

I have to exit it probably 3 times a minute surfing through the forums!

Much as you might dislike it, how do you think the site gets paid for?

(I originally posted this in another thread, but it's also relevant here)

The ads I really hate are the ones that intentionally mislead the audience:

"You are the big winner!!!"

"You have 1 new message waiting for you."

"Shoot the monkey and win $1,000 or whatever" (featuring a fake "game" to trick the audience into visiting their site)

I understand that advertising supports this site, but the administrators should have the courage to reject ads that are intentionally misleading. Sure, most Web surfers know that these are fake messages, but some people, mostly new users, may not realize that. The administrators should realize that we (the users) are their primary customers, while the advertisers are only their secondary customers.

Other than that, I have no complaints about ads on this great site. I can even tolerate pop-up ads if they keep this site free of charge.

Frankly I don't care about banner and regularly click on them to generate some $$ for the site, and I havent seen any pop-up adds.

The popups are new, have been appearing for only a day or two now.
I generally do not visit sites that use popup ads again, and so do many people. Several sites that started using popups have had to back down because a large proportion of the regular visitors complained and threatened to leave.
I do not care the normal banners. They are easily ignored (apart from the few that eat a lot of bandwidth, these seem to have been removed).

Site administrators cannot generally influence which banners are displayed (apart from maybe a general category, for example a.net might have more aviation and travel related ads). They have a contract with an advertising agency and they provide the banners (either at random or targetted) from their customerbase.
I wish I were flying
