Does anyone have any past experience with these certifications?

Are they worth it?

Is it true they are self study (I couldn't find any training centers)?

My brother who has several certifications says you are wasting your time and to become a garbage man. Okay, all kidding aside, he said you can pass them by studying on your own. He did say he wasn't sure if they are worth it or not. If he ever gets a really great job I'll let you know. I do know he kicks my butt when it comes to computer knowledge.

To get a job in the industry you'll probibly need the certs. But from what I've seen, just because you have the paper doesn't mean you know sh*t. Have a look at the tech forums at windrivers.com, you'll find a lot of threads about the differant certs there and weather or not they're worth it.

MCSE alone will not guarantee you success. I know of this person with at least dozen designations- with more on the way. You should be prepared to study constantly to adapt to changing technologies. To be frank, MCSE is useless on its own. You can actually find almost exact copies of your exam on the web. My brother only needed a couple days to study for each portion of the exam. He even said that the names of people in the questions posed were the same in some instances. Just look for those and you should be passing in no time.

Aussiemite,

move from Brizzy then because there isn't much going on up there  Smile/happy/getting dizzy. Remember too, that CISCO certification is far more important than Microsoft Certification. Which Cisco stuff do you have? I'm currently studying CCNA.

Original Poster,

I am a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, currently working as a senior systems engineer (contractor) and the others are right. The study alone will not get you any job. However, given the fact that our industry is closing down and that jobs are being lost all over the place I would suggest that the certification is now a major factor when trying to find a job.

Someone with qualifications and certification will get the job over someone with qualifications only. Indeed i've seen helpdesk jobs advertised where MCP is a mandatory requirement!

As for the study, it is possible (and cheaper) to self study so go for it. You will, however, find that you need more than certification. There are too many "paper MCSE's" out there, people who are certified without any real knowledge, who have simply learnt the answers to the questions to the tests (got to love Transcenders!). To get the experience you may need to start at the absolute bottom of the barrel, but if you are clever and have good customer service skills then you will do OK.

Anyway, good luck.

MS certs alone will not do much for you, they're looked on in a better light if accompanied by something else...preferably experience. I would personally add that imho Cisco certs would be more useful to you. But then again I'm studying for my CCNP so am a little biased  Big grin
