N400QX, patriotism aside, do you really think there is a chance for a medal for the US? Look at their goalies: Dunham, Barasso and Richter. And the team defence is very old. Granted, Bill Guerin is one of the best players in the NHL, but the rest of the team is either past their prime ,(Roenick, Hull, Tkachuk, Housley) etc or not in it yet (York, Poti Deadmarsh).
At this point Canada is still considered the favourite, but we all remember what happened in the last Olympics. While I agree with most of the roster selections, I definetly think Joe Thornton should be on the team, taking the spot of Joe Nieuwendyk. Otherwise, this will be a very, very fast team with the best defence in the world. Goaltending is OK with Joseph and Brodeur, but neither is really hot at the moment, at least in NHL play. And even being from Toronto, I've never really been a Curtis Joseph fan...he is just a bit too inconsistent.
Quite honestly, the Czechs still scare me just because of the magic Dominik Hasek can work. He can singlehandedly nullify any glaring deficeciency on his team if his head is in the game.
The Russians are also top-notch with both veterans such as Federov, Kovalev and Bure, along with 18 year old phenom Ilya Kovalchuk. They will probably be the most entertaining team to watch play with so much speed, but with Khabibulin in goal they are way better than the last time. Defence is a bit of a weak spot however.
Quite honestly, barring a major upset, the Swedes and Finns don't have much of a chance.
And thank goodness the games won't be on at 3:30 am anymore!

Yeah, I think theres a chance. But of course I want my country to win-- whats the crime in that? I still think it'll be the US and Canada in the end...

I would point out the US womens hockey team is something like 32-0 in international competion

I still remember what "Golden-shower" Brett Hull - and the rest of the US hockeyteam - did during the 1998 olympics. That was really un-professional...

This is the time every four years when those of us in the UK find out that we actually have an ice hockey team! For the rest of the time we're not aware of it. Might be something to do with the fact that we're really bad at the game.
In fact the winter Olympics themselves are a bit of a write off for us. Two weeks of listening to the Swiss and Austrian national anthems. A lack of mountains here might have something to do with it.
I miss those USA v USSR ice hockey matches though. Even for the casual observer they were such entertainment!

My heart is with Canada, but my money would be on Russia. This is probably one of the best Americans teams that I've seen, but so long as Brett Hull (who was born in Canada) plays for them, I hope they finish out of the medals. And that's nothing against Americans, that's against Hull.

I have a brother-in-law who currently plays with San Jose-Mike Ricci......I recently had a conversation with him regarding who he thinks will win. His comment was "its anybodys game - depends on how the team shows up to play the game".....you can have the best players but if its not their day then they don't produce".

Olympic hockey? These are the WINTER games, the next time olympic hockey is played will be Athens 04. The game they play during winter Olympics is ICE hockey

A player who holds his stick in a way that someone else rides over it is committing a foul, regardless of intention.

Well, if Nagano is anything to go by, the US doesn't stand a chance. Remember the furore caused when the US was advancing yet while the competing teems were in the Olympic Village getting their zzzz's, the US team was out drinking beers and staying out late.
I think part of the problem in '98 was that the US just didn't take it seriously enough. We saw the Olympics as a road trip where, oh yeah, we had to play some hockey against some of the best teams in the world. Another problem, is that certain countries that are hockey powerhouses, like CZ, CA, and RU are a lot more dominating than in regular NHL play. For starters, in NHL, these players are spread out to different teams and their overall success is dependant on their teammates. However, for a nation to bring together it's finest in one team, say Canada or Russia, both send many players to the NHL that have amazing successes, you're talking about a real challege.
My bet is on Canada or Russia. However, we did win the gold the last time the Winter Olympics were on US soil, the 1980 Games in Lake Placid, so maybe a repeat upset is in the cards.

Mike Ricci was drafted by the Flyers, and then traded to the Quebec Nordiques as part of the Eric Lindros trade. Later, he was traded from Colorado (where Qeubec moved to) to San Jose for Shean Donovan and a first round pick about four years ago.

My favorite team is Toronto closely followed by Dallas(could change, dallas is doing horrible as of late)
