Making A Web Site

Fri Feb 08, 2002 9:05 am

Hello all,
I am thinking about making a website. Now, I want to make a good website, not one of those personal pages but a site displaying my aviation photos, information about my photos, and possibly sell my photos through that website if anyone wants to. Mind you, I have taken much better photos than the ones on, these are just the ones that I got lucky with when scanning. Smile and I have hundereds possibly thousands of photos around and I need to do somthing with them so......But how would I go about making a website? What do I need? How about Microsoft Home Page website designer? Who is a good host for my website? How much does it usually cost? Stuff like that.
Thanks guys!

You can find loads of sites that will host your page for free, but you'll probably have to put up with banner ads or pop-up ads. No point in paying for service if you're not going to attract huge number of hits.

Learn HTML if you can. If you cannot, learn Macromedia Dreamweaver. If you have MS Office, you can use FrontPage that comes bundled with your suite, but avoid using Frontpage extensions as they're annoying for many. Since you'll be dealing with photos, you'll want to learn Photoshop to touch up any photos.

Just a few suggestions...
-keep your file sizes small. Nothing is worse than seeing a [email protected] picture in the middle of the page that takes forever to load.
-make sure all links are alive.
-careful with using too many colors. I personally don't like seeing pages that depict x-mas decorations.

Hmmmmm. I've looked, but I cannot find Microsoft Frontpage on my comp. I have MS Office(That came with the computer). Does it come with another version of MS Office? Is there any free programs I can download that can help me create the site?

my new website will be up soon, and you'll be able to upload your own aviation pictures because my paid server gives me unlimited space  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

heres some free editors, This is free, but you can only edit one page at a time :-( Click producs, then Dreamweaver! This has a free 30 day demo, then you need to either buy it or crack it, my demo runs out soon, this is the best editor around, it's great for beginners!!

FrontPage isn't bundled with Office as far as I know, unless it comes with Office XP Pro, but I doubt that.

I've used both FrontPage 98 and Dreamweaver 4.0. While Dreamweaver is technically better (at least is writes more efficient HTML) I found it harder to use than FrontPage. As much as I like to bash Microsoft products, I actually think FrontPage is a good way to make a website, plus the explorer portion of FrontPage makes it easy to manage your website. However it lacks internal FTP like Dreamweaver has, but that is meaningless to me since I need to use a secure FTP software to upload to my webspace.

It doesn't hurt to learn HTML either, come to think of it FrontPage lets you directly edit the HTML too, Dreamweaver does not do it as neatly. Invest in Photoshop as well... it is super-useful for handling your photos.

You should get a host who allows hotlinking.
