American Airlines A300 Given F-16 Escort To Newark

Fri Feb 22, 2002 1:10 pm

Just on CBS 11 O'clock news.

After a hydraulic warning light went off on an AAL A300 bound for Newark from Miami, USAF F-16s were called to give it an escort to Newark Airport.

The plane landed safely and no one was hurt.

I give the US a week to ground the series after what happened late last year...

Question...

Why would fighters escort a plane with a hydraulic fuel warning problem? It seems kind of odd to me.

Im thinking the F-16 alert pad pilots are getting bored so they get to intercept an aircraft with any sort of problem. At least that what it seems like.

I hate to disappoint you beefmoney but the pilots are not bored and just launching themselves for 'kicks'. Myself on the AWACS and about 4 other agencies. from NORAD on down, have to jump through hoops (so to speak) to launch on a plane. I can't mention specifics since they are classified, but I can say the pilots don't launch just for fun.

Just because the news doesn't report it, doesn't mean there is not more involved, that folks don't know about. Not trying to sound like an ass, but those are the facts. I fly and mission plan this stuff everyday so I do have a clue on the issue.

Quite a number of emergency vehicles out on the ramp waiting for this bird. That F16 sure was loud! Needless to say my coworkers and I were wondering what kind of drama was getting ready to unfold.

Had this been at any other time (pre 9/11) it would have never made the news.

Interesting story and all, but perhaps doesn't belong in this forum.

They passed right over my house last night. It was extremely loud, woke my sister.  Wink/being sarcastic

I don't really question the A300-600 itself. After all, Lufthansa, for example, flies this aircraft with absolutely no problems, as do other carriers. What I do seriously question are the overall maintenance practices/polices of American Airlines itself. Remember, AA used to remove their DC-10 engines with a forklift truck! (determined by the FAA in the 1979 Chicago-O'Hare crash).

Yes, and we all know three things from this:

1) Forklifts are inherently bad in maintenance
2) American was the only airline that did this and
3) American hasn't changed in 23 years.

Sheesh.

(In case you didn't get it, UA's and CO's DC10s were grounded for the same reason in 1979. And if you believe there have been no changes in procedure for any airline in the last 23 years, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn with your name on it.)

Lt-Awacs: I know they dont do that, I should have added some sort of smilie at the end like  Nuts or somthing, I was just expressing my feelings on it, and how it seems, my father is in the airforce and I know alot about the USAF. But thanks for the info.
