Who Is The Pope?

Mon Apr 01, 2002 4:43 am

Who is the pope? I really don't know who he is, as in what he represents in the religious world. Could somebody explain to me what figure he is, and what he stands for?

And secondly, why is he so greatly adored by the masses? I've learned about what the other pope's have done in hisotry, the good and the bad, so I know about that. But what about in the present? Thanks.

As a jewish living in a catholic country, I can tell you he's a political leader and a really charismatic guy!!!!!!.

People use to love him... when you go to a catholic worship, everybody use to pray after him, so be sure all catholics feel he's part of their families.

I'm not a Catholic but certainly admire him. Nowadays, he is very sick but when he was first ordained (or whatever they get) he was the first Pope to really get out to various countries all over the world, which he still does whenever he can. He came to Scotland as part of a UK tour and impressed everyone by his strength of faith and conviction.

You must also remember that he is Polish and at the time he became Pope, Poland was leading the reform of the Iron Curtain countries in Eastern Europe and the church was therefore seen to be giving very strong leadership to that movement, which in Poland, was known as the Solidarity movement.

No, not the head of the Protestant Church (there really isn't a "Protestant Church" as there is a Roman Catholic Church), rather the head of the Roman Catholic Church.

I'm not Catholic, so correct me if I'm wrong, but he is the head of the Church, a "descendant" (not by relation, of course) of Peter, whom Jesus told to lead the church.

The Pope is the head of the Roman Catholic Church. He does not represent all Christians, merely a minority of them (those that are RC).

Protestants and Eastern Orthodox Christians do not recognize the Pope.

Christ said something to the effect "Peter, you are the rock on which I will build my Church. Whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven. Whatever you hold bound on earth shall be held bound in Heaven". The Pope is the spiritual descendent of Peter.

But maybe he's Hindu at heart.  Big grin

Ya, he's like the Queen Mum.....they both wear dresses. and neither has likely had sex with a woman at least.

What does he do? Like any CEO, he provides the strategic leadership to the organization: no contraception, homosexuality is bad, multiply fruitfully, rally the masses periodically, groom a successor, for instance.

He's the head of the Catholic Church (on earth at least), and is the supreme interpreter of doctrine and church tradition. He is held to be infallible by Roman Catholics, so therefore his word is considered God's will.

He's also the absolute monarch of the Vatican (the smallest country in the world I believe), and has final say in all matters there. His reign in the Vatican is considered a benevolent theocracy. He's elected by the worldwide body of cardinals (130-170 in number), and holds his position for life.

He's very revered by Catholics, but is considered either irrelevant or viewed with suspicious caution by Prostestants. And of course, there're centuries of politics behind the post of Pope.

Hope this helps.

The pope has two roles in the Catholic Church. First, he is the Bishop of Rome, secondly, he holds what is called the "Petrine Office."

This means he holds a ministry that is founded on two specific docrines, first being his primacy over the whole church. While this does mean the Pope has supreme power over the Church, it is a power exercised in communion with the Bishops in a complex fashion that has changed and evolved over the centuries. Since the Second Vatican Council, the papal primacy means the Pope must act "Collegially" with the bishops. This is vague term whose definition has sparked a lot of controvercy, but basically means a communion of local churches who in turn comprise what is known as the Church universal through a co-responsibility between the pope and the bishops in decisionmaking, but with the Pope acting as its head. What is necessary to remember in this is that primacy is an act of service to the rest of the Church. The Church, in turn is not the hirearchy in Rome, but who are the people of God.

The other doctrine is of infallibility, which means teaching without error. This is a much mis-understood term. First off, the Pope can only make infallible statements on issues of faith and morals. Second, there are two ways in which a Pope can proclaim a teaching as infallible. The first is by pronouncemnt (called ex cathedra, literally, "from the chair"). Such pronouncements must closely reflect the faith of the whole Church, meaning there must be assent from the whole Church discerned by close communcation between the Pope and the bishops. In the last 150 years, there have been only two such pronouncements, the most recent being in 1952 (I think...).

The second way in which infallibility is exercised is in Ecumenical council with the Pope at its head. An ecumentical council is a gathering of the Pope and the Bishops in conclave to jointly decide matters affecting the whole Church. The most recent council is the Second Vatican Council in 1962.

Are you confused yet? I'm studying this stuff and it makes my head spin...  Confused

The Pope is the leader of the Vatican, yes, thats the country sandwiched by Italy. He is quite sick right now and is dying... The Vatican is the center of the Catholic Church, my family's religion.

I however have been wondering what all this religious stuff is really worth, it is definately not worth killing people over ("jihad", "holy crucade", etc..total BS IMHO).

It just makes me wonder... why should we dedicate our lives to a certain religion? Which one is "right"?

*done ranting, but still confused over religion*

You guys are all sick, one, by showing no respect for the dead, and two, getting some sort of sick humor out of somebody's death that causes other's mourning. Show some respect, stop being asses. The least you can do is respect some users wishes here on the forums, and not insult and degrade the Queen's death.

And secondly, if you think that because this is an internet forum that whatever you say doesn't mean anything, that's disgusting. Its basically giving yourself the right to say or get away with anything! Well grow up! Just because you aren't talking to the person face to face, you shouldn't do it through a computer screen!

I'd like to see you go up to a British citizen and tell him/her all that crap you've been spewing on this and the other thread. Now I can see why other nations don't like Americans too much, because of ignoramus's like you.

It boils down to one thing, respect the dead, don't insult and degrade them. What you guys are doing makes me sick to the stomach.

Go Canada, if you insulted 9-11, they'd get f***ing pissed off, but to them, its ok to insult and degrade the queen's death. They are the biggest hypocrites on this forum by doing what they're doing. KROC, so much for your great airliners.net double standard, you're being a hypocrite by making the Queen's death a trivial thing, as well as insulting it.

Too bad this is happening

ok kroc then i couldnt care less if your mother died or if you have a family member who died in 9/11, i couldnt give a shit if a new york firemand saved a child, whats makes them better than the british army in ww2?

see you wouldnt like that comment would you?

the fact remains that i do care, i care that3000 people were blown apart by terrorists, the civilians never deserved that and ill always remember that dreadful day, the fact also remains that i respect the queen mum, you might disagree but you dont need to slag her off.

its the same as the pro-bin laden people who said america deserved it, everyone in the usaa was rightly upset.

and im rightly upset when you slag off the queen mum the day after she died, im not the only one as the inapporiate jokes seem to have been deleted.

now you can take the mick as much as you want and so ca your friends with stupid scarastic smilies but i dont give a damm, you are sick for taking the mickey out of the queen mum as anyone would be by degarding 9/11.

i have repsect for america and what it has suffered, so some respect for your number one ally.

I think, although I'm not going to be an interpreter for KROC, coz I'll be damned if I know his intentions all the time, but I think what these people are doing are making fun of the fuss made by the death. They're (if in some sort of trivial manner) saying that everyone is getting bent out of shape for a woman they've never even met, and even if they were face-to-face with her, she probably wouldn't them the time of day, but no one cares when another person dies, anonomously, quietly. No national mourning, no public lining to see the motorcade go bye.

My personal opinion lis largely with that of KROC, et al. I'm not really bent out of shape over it, nor could I really care much at all. Is it sad, sure, but no sadder than any other person that I've never met before's death. The main difference between me and the other's is that I'm not gonna go about making a point of it. No more, no less.
