Languages Mostly Spoken By Members: Conclusion

Thu May 09, 2002 6:16 am

After this thread https://www.airliners.net/discussions/non_aviation/read.main/220663/ , I counted the results of which language is spoken the most between a.net users. The results are not counted by the number of people speaks that language, but on quality numbers. That means, a language for every person will get the amount of points the person said as quality. Only numbers between 1-10 countrs, all over 10 are reduced to 10 and all beyond 1 aren't counted. Sorry if you didn't understood, my English is only 8  Smile . So, here it goes (English obviously won, but there was quite a nice battle at other places; sorry if I made any mistakes in counting)...

1.English - 408 points
2.French - 154 ponts
3.German - 152 points
4.Spanish - 64 points
5.Dutch - 40 points
6.Swedish - 31 points
7.Italian - 21 points
8.Arabic - 20 points
8.Lithuanian - 20 points
9.Russian - 16 points
10.Japanese - 15 points
10.Latin - 15 points
11.Finnish - 14 points
12.Ancient Greek - 11 points
13.Chinese - 10 points
13.Hebrew - 10 points
13.Bengali - 10 points
13.Icelandic - 10 points
13.Croatian - 10 points
13.Greek - 10 points
14.Hindi - 9 points
15.Farsi - 8 points
15.Latvian - 8 points
15.Irish - 8 points
15.Danish - 8 points
16.Gujarati - 7 points
17.Polish - 6 points
17.Thai - 6 points
18.Surinamese - 5 points
19.Norse - 4 points
20.Kutchi - 2 points
20.American Sign Language - 2 points

No, absolutely not surprising that english wins in a english-speaking forum  Big grin

But i think English has established it as the world-language without any doubts..

German on place #3 surprises me, becuase only about 110.000.000 people on this planet have German as their native language...

English, French, German, in that order, are the most important languages.

Maybe I don't understand your way of adding up points, but I'm quite sure I gave Danish a 10.....

F.pier right, but not among internet users (I believe internet is still not accessable to most Chinese people, especially ones who lives in small towns)

Nik, it was hard to count all points. I incidentally skipped that when counting. Danish should actually be 18 points and get a place in top 10.

Amazing result with German in 3rd.
But I disagree with that French is one of the most important languages. Why ? Spanish is much more important and so is Chinese (Mandarin I guess).

"Chinese and Spanish are way far more spoken than German or French."

Yes, but the problem is: WHO speaks it. On this forum, most of the members are from the western countries and the modern asian countries...

Maybe 1 billion people speak chinese, but most of them have no right for free speech ...

Someone up there said German and French outrank Spanish.

This person is wrong!

English and Spanish are the most important of the world's languages. Arabic is up there.

French is spoken in a great part of Africa and German is well understood in a lot of countries (especially in Europe).
I'm surprised to see the Dutch language ranking up at place 5, but there are a lot of Dutch and Belgian spotters around here (including me).

Well what a surprise English first, NOT, most of us have to read and write to be a part of the forums.

French & German, 2nd and third expect that with such large population bases.

Dutch 4th, my theory being that there are a reasonable number of people over 15 million but this is not a big enough pool of people to ignore outside languages such as English.

I think I would find it hard if Australia did not speak English, I would find it frustrating to learn another language, I always wondered what would have happened if English was not the main language and I didn't speak it.

What no Norwegian speakers participated in the survey.

Sorry, I thought you meant Arabic, just made a mistake. Where is it being spoken in Aramiac? Armenia? I soon repost all counts to the correct ones, also add the votes on the "What languages you know?" thread posted there arefter this topic was created.

Aramiac is spoken by the Assyrians and Chaldeans. I am an Assyrians. Our homeland is where Turkey and Iraq are now. There are about three million of us and we are a Christian minority in the Middle East. Aramaic along with Hebrew and Greek is one of the oldest languages spoken. In fact Christ Himself spoke in Aramiac! It's completely different from Arabic, in fact it's probably closer to Hebrew!

Hey, Portugese isn't even up there, even though I gave myself a 7. It should have at least beat Polish. Portugese is the sixth most spoken language in the world.

Here's a list of the most widely spoken languages:

Well, if the BBC is anything to go by, Singapore has a higher per-capita income than Great Britain, France, Australia, New Zealand, and lots of other countries.

English is by far the world's most widely spoken second language. Except in a few special cases, it is the second language of choice in most parts of the world.
