Are Black Bananas Ok

Tue Sep 17, 2002 6:18 am

I like bananas but is it ok to eat them when they go black. I mean ideally you should eat them when they are fresh and Yellow but this is'nt always practicable. Will I be doing myself any harm by following this practice.

Wow, never thought anyone would ask on a web forum!

There are actually black bananas that are a different kind - but totally black, means it's bad. If it's partially black, you will realize that the fruit itself is getting watery and mushy - and may start to taste funny.... that means it's ripe to the point of just about turning bad!

Black bananas just mean they're ripe vs. yellow or green. They should be fine to consume considering many recipes call for completely blackened bananas (banana-bread, for example).

You can't discriminate against the black bananas.  Big grin

Buy a dozen bananas eat 6 and give the rest to someone that can make killer banana bread. My poor grandmother hated it when I'd take her grocery shopping and grab the biggest bunch I could find, she knew what was coming the following week. Actually, she loved it. Banana bread to die for.

In answer to the original question, no. An overripe banana will not hurt you. If you like them that way go for it. Just watch for the mold. If that is present you've waited too long for even banana bread.

Black banana's?

Ugh! How vile. You throw them out in the garbage bin, otherwise you'll get a fruit fly infestation.

A guy at work left a banana in one of his desk draws for over a week and couldn't work out why there were fruit flies all around him.

Yuck. Check for maggots before consumption.

I really think that you should get rid of bananas when they turn black. Why would you want to eat a black banana anyway when fresh ones are much better.

If the fruit inside has not rotted, use them to make banana bread. It will be much sweeter than if you used fresh bananas.

That's what my dad always did with overripe bananas.

Hi JAL I guess what I really meant was not when they are totally Black but just with Black bits if you know what I mean. So yeah it looks like that will be ok then...thanks to all for the 'feedback' on the Banana issue.

Well, guess you mean the black bits outside the Banana, right? Well, that's ok for me but I don't prefer to eat a brown Banana. Just a FRESH yellow Banana is my favorite.

Btw, interesting discussion ...
