Sat Oct 05, 2002 4:48 pm

The London based EUI has released a list of the best cities in the world for ex-pats:

1. Melbourne Australia
Vancouver Canada
3. Perth, Australia
4. Vienna, Austria
Toronto Canada
Geneva Switzerland
Zurich Switzerland
8. Adelaide, Australia
Brisbane, Australia
Sydney Australia
Copenhagen, Denmark
Dusseldorf, Germany
Oslo, Norway
Montreal, Canada

The rating expresses the level of hardship for expatriates in the 130 cities, focusing on 12 factors including housing, education, recreational activities and climate.

Melbourne's weather prevented it earning a perfect score of zero.

So Sydneysiders .. seems Melbourne is better ....  Big grin

I'd go along with that (not necessarily Melbourne but Australia as a whole). The abundance of natural resources, varied climate and landscape and cheap cost of living (compared to Europe) means that the standard of living is high even for those of modest means.
I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

Don't flatter yourself Signora ADG, Melbourne may be very nice but who wants to live in a miserable, grey city with an unhealthy obsession with afl?!

Give me sunny, expensive Sydney anytime darling. Although I'm sure we'll both agree that there is no better place than Canberra  Big grin

Loved my layovers in Melbourne -

Lygon Street, in Carlton - "restaurants row"... among the best food selections from the entire world available there -
xxx
And nearby, take a drive to Ballarat, or Yarra Valley, do wine testing...
Lovely area, yes I like Melbourne, and... Brisbane... ok - Sydney too...

VH-ADG,

You have to wonder what sort of person would vote Melbourne in such a way. I've had fun in Melbourne but the overall gloom and dreariness of the place depresses me after a few days and I can't wait to escape. You can't feel the slightest bit glamorous in Melbourne. At least not in the way you can in Sydney and even good old Brizvegas.

I wouldn't live anywhere else. As for Canberra? Well it used to be such a clean and impressive place but the infrastructure seems to be fading, the roads crumbling and not nearly enough money is spent on it as it once was.

Even our Prime Minister prefers to live and keep his family in Sydney rather than the nationals capital. Sydney leaves the other capitals behind when comes to things like *lifestyle* *jobs* *money*.

As a mexican born expatriate of Sydney i'd have to disagree. Mind you, if you read the paper you'll find Sydney lost out because of it's high rate of violence.

Well, now that you guys won't pay for it what's a capital city to do? It's still a very pretty place and the roads remain better than Sydney.
