What's Your Accent?

Tue Oct 08, 2002 10:02 am

Since we conduct most of our conversations on this forum in English, it's safe to assume that most people on here are quite fluent and can speak it well. My question is: how do you speak it? What kind of accent do you have?

Me. I was born in South Carolina and lived there for half my life, but I moved around a lot afterwards and then lived in Canada for over 10 years. I've been in New York City for a few years now. I used to have a southern accent, but lost it after moving to Canada. I developed a Canadian accent, but when I moved here people made fun of it, so I tried desperately to drop it (I hated it anyways), and have been very successful. I pronounce some things like a New Yorker would and others like any generic Eastern U.S. accent.

Now, what's your accent?

Hmmm, that I'm still trying to figure out myself.....lots of people say I sound like I'm from Europe,Australia or California. Fortunately for me,some however have struck right on the money saying I have what sounds like a mixture of a New York and Midwestern accent!

Lol , The first time I heard a Puerto Rican or Cuban speaking Spanish when I was begining my eyes looked like this O_O , Incredibly difficult accent for an English speaker to understand, very fast paced speach , its nice once you get used to it though=)

My mom speaks with a Brazilian accent and my dad with a slight southern accent, so they cancel each other out. I grew up in neighborhoods with a black plurality, so in the end I speak with a flat accent with a dash of ebonics.

I've been in so many places that I my accent makes no sense anymore. Although I'm from NYC, I don't have a typical NY accent. It sounds like a mixture of American, British, Austrian and when I go way up North for any length of time, Swedish. Americans say I sound British, Viennese say I don't sound American and Germans think I was born in Austria.

More of a Queens, with a bit of a Long Island accent. (For those who don't know, a true New Yorkers accent.)

For the most part I've got a typical Midwestern accent with a slight Wisconsin twang. People from outside of Wisconsin tell me that we tend to hang onto our vowels, especially "o's". The best example of this is how we say "Wiscaaaansin"

Born of a Connecticut father and an Ohio mom, and growing up in Texas, my speech ranges from neutral to mild Texas accent, with a thicker one if I have been drinking (!).

Basically a very mild version of a NYC-ish accent. Grew up about 40 miles north of NYC in northern Westchester County: I do not drop the R's at the end of words, so words like Mirror, Better, Sure etc are pronounced more or less like they're spelled...or like the dictionary say they should be...many from NYC would ( and did ) tag me as having something of a hick accent- Yet, the general sound betrays my downstate NY origins to those elsewhere in the US, especially the south, where I now live. 'Dog' = "Dawg"...'Chocolate' = "Chawk-lit" etc. -- Funny thing I noticed, and many from the NYC area may agree: You can go clear out east to the Hamptons on Long Island and the strong NYC accent is near universal- But, you go not even a dozen miles north of the Bronx/Westchester border and the NYC accent starts fading fast.

A bit of a mix of Australian, English, Indian... fairly unrecognisable accent, I don't sound Australian to most Aussies, but I don't sound Indian to most Indians, in fact I was once even told I sounded "gay", even though I don't think anyone can sound gay!

English:
As far as I know, I have an American accent (from meeting people, TV, etc.), as well as a slight hint of a British accent, again, from meeting British people. Inevitably, there's also a Maltese element, particularly a slight tas-Sliema accent (which is characterized by not pronouncing r's - I don't do it all the time, but sometimes it happens).

Maltese:
Pure Ghawdxi. I am not a Gozitan, but guess what happens when you live in Gozo and hear people speaking in a Gozitan accent all the time?

Czech:
No detectable accent. Typical of South Moravia, the region where the 'cleanest' Czech is spoken.

Having been born and raised in Pittsburgh in a family that sports a rather strong Pittsburgh accent, I took pride in controlling, then completely losing my Pittsburghese. Or so I thought. Out here in Phoenix, AZ I speak to so many people at my job, and about once a week, someone says, "You're from Pittsburgh, aren't you?". So I guess I still sneak in a "dahntahn", an "aht", or an "an 'at" in my speech. I'm pretty sure that I am no longer a true "yinser" though.

I've got a screwed up mutt accent. I'm from Ohio but everyone else in my family is from Pittsburgh so I've got a half-and-half. I say some things in Pittsburghese, others in just a plain ole midwestern accent. For example, I'll say: "The car needs washed in halfenar." In pure Pittsburghese it'd be "The car needs worshed in halfenar" and in pure Ohioan it'd be "The car needs to be washed in half an hour." So yeah I'm right in the middle.

I have just a standard, generic American accent. Even though I have been living in Georgia for almost 8 years, aint' none of them there Southern accents be rubbin' off on me. In Atlanta, where I live though, there are people from everywhere, so there is a lot of the general American accent. I don't know what it would be like if I lived in Rome, Athens, or Dublin. Isn't GA a ripoff? Three cities/towns with names of big foreign cities.

Everyone says I have a very funny accent. I guess it's a mix of California and mid-Atlantic, with some midwest (my parents) thrown in there. It seems normal to me, but most of the people I've ever talked to have commented on it.

English: "Standard" American accent with a dash of Bostonian thrown in for good measure:

French: According to a French friend of mine, I talk like a Québécois, as in if I were speaking to a Frenchman, he would think I was from Canada, and a Canadian wouldn't be able to tell much of a difference. Not bad, eh?  Smile

When I lived in Ontario, I was told a couple of times I spoke with a 'Manitoban accent'.

It's supposedly similar to the accent used by the characters in the movie 'Fargo', or to a typical Minnesota/North Dakota accent, but with a more German/Ukrainian influence instead of a Scandinavian one, and with Canadian pronunciations (z = zed, Iraq = ih-raak) instead of American ones (z = zee, Iraq = ih-rawk).
