1998-2001 BMW 745iL Acceleration Numbers

Thu Jan 30, 2003 12:51 pm

Hi everyone- I could use some help. I need the acceleration rates for a 1998-2001 (as in 1998, 1999, 2000, or 2001) BMW 745iL, as in the time it takes for it to go from zero to whatever. I've run it through search engines and haven't been able to find anything. Any estimates if you own one yourself or confirmed numbers would be appreciated. Thanks!

First of all the car in that picture (if it is an American market car, which it looks like) is not a 745iL. When BMW changed to the current body style 740 was bumped up to 745i/Li (it does after all have a 4.4 liter engine). The car in that picture is an E39 body style 740i, 740iL, or 750iL. If it a European market car it could also be a 735i or a diesel (sorry, don't know the number), but I doubt it with those austentacious 18" rims - very American market.

Now, my guess, or what I can remember rather, is somewhere in the low 6's, maybe 6.3 for a 740iL. I remember '00 or so 328i manual does 0-60mph around 6.8 seconds or so and how a 740 wasn't all that much quicker.

hope that helps you out

For the current ('03) 745iL, the numbers are

0-60 mph in 6.7 sec. 1/4-mile in 14.9 sec.

The '01 had 42 less horsepower, so I'd guess a 0-60 time being in the low to mid-7 second range. 7.3 perhaps?

Flyf15 is wrong.

Acceleration for the new body-style (current model) 7-series is as follows:

5.9 seconds, 0-60mph for the 745i and the 745Li.

5.4 seconds, 0-60mph for the 760Li.

I hope that helps.

My father owns a 2000 740iL and it runs a 6.3 I think. Pretty damn quick for such a large car, but it sounds like the new ones are faster. My 95 M5 runs 5.9 however, so I can still take him. When I get that chip it will run ?????????? One day when I have money Ill get it!

I've driven a few of my father in-law's 740iL's (he's on his 3rd). While the car is definitely quick I don't think it'll run 0-60 mph in 6.3. High 6's is more like it. I do love that car though. The nimbleness for such a large car still astounds me!

Yes, BMWs do indeed rock. I just picked up a "CPO" 2000 528iA Sport. It is "Biarritz blue," with a sand interior, Steptronic tranny, 17 inch rims, and all the bells and whistles. Not as much ooomph as the V8, but the in-line BMW six is still one great engine.
Maggs swings, it's a drive deep to left! The Tigers are going to the World Series!!!
