War Make You Think Of Any Songs?

Tue Apr 01, 2003 2:02 pm

Music has often been associated with war. Be it having to do with a war, the timing of a song coming out during a war, or somthing that just makes you think of the conflict. Examples have been the release of "White Christmas" during the later years of WW II, many, many protest songs during Vietnam, and a song like "From a Distance", that came out right before Gulf War I.

Any songs come to mind with this conflict? I have one. It's from the late 70's. When I hear it in my mind, I see, set against the conflict, a distant picture of OBL / EBZR), Belgium">OBL. With the recent suicide bombing on American forces in Iraq, it definitely comes to mind.

The Prophet's Song
by Queen

Ooh, oh, people of the earth
Listen to the warning the seer he said
"Beware the storm that gathers here
Listen to the Wise man!"

I dreamed I saw on a moonlit stair
Spreading his hands on the multitude there
A man who cried for a love gone stale
And ice-cold hearts of charity bare
I watched as fear took the old man's gaze
Hope of the young in troubled graves
"I see no day", I heard him say,
"So gray is the face of every mortal"

Ooh, ooh, people of the earth
Listen to the warning The Prophet he said
"For soon the cold of night will fall
Summoned by your own hand
Ooh, ooh, children of the land
Quicken to the new life, take my hand
Fly and find the new green bough
Return like the white dove"

He told of death as a bone-white haze
Taking the lost and the unloved babe
Late, too late all the wretched come
These Kings of Beast now counting their days

From mothers' love is the son estranged
Married his own his precious gain
"The earth will shake, in two will break
And death all around will be your dowry"

Ooh, Ooh, people of the earth
Listen to the warning, the seer he said
"For those who hear and mark my word
Listen to the good plan....
Ooh, Ooh, Ooh, Ooh, and two by two
My human zoo, they'll be running for to come
Running for to come, out of the rain!

"Oooh, flee for your lives, who heed me not
Let all your treasures make you.
Oooh, fear for your lives, deceive you not
The fires of hell will take you-should death await you"

God give you grace to purge this place
And peace all around will be your fortune!

"Ooh, ooh, children of the land
Love is still the answer, take my hand!"
The vision fades a voice I hear
"Listen to the madman!"

But still I fear, and still I dare not
Laugh at the madman.

Anyone have something they think about?

John Lenon : "Imagine"

if he were still alive he sure would have revived
the song altering the text a little,
like er... "imagine there's NO oil."

Best wishes,
Praying for Peace and ending this dirty war.

Maybe, when the coallition forces do actually rid Iraq of Saddam, then they should play Leanne Rimmes new song. The words are just great! 'It's independece day I'm free and it's a strange place to be...'

First song that came to mind was the first verse of Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction".

Midnight Oil - US Forces

US Forces give the nod, it's a setback for your country
Bombs and trenches all in rows, bombs and threats still ask for more
Divided world the CIA, who controls the issue
You leave us with no time to talk, you can write your assessment

Sing me songs of no denying, seems to me too many trying
Waiting for the next big thing

Will you know it when you see it, high risk children dogs of war
Now market movements call the shots, business deals in parking lots
Waiting for the meat of tomorrow

Sing me songs...

Everyone is too stoned to start emission
People too scared to go to prison
We're unable to make decision
Political party line don't cross that floor
Lt. Ron Hubbard can't save your life
Superboy takes a plutonium wife
In the shadow of Ban The Bomb we live

Sing me songs...

Ballad of the Green Berets
(SSGT Barry Sadler)

Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say
The brave men of the Green Beret

Silver wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men we'll test today
But only three win the Green Beret

Trained to live, off nature's land
Trained in combat, hand to hand
Men who fight by night and day
Courage deep, from the Green Beret

Silver wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men we'll test today
But only three win the Green Beret

Back at home a young wife waits
Her Green Beret has met his fate
He has died for those oppressed
Leaving her this last request

Put silver wings on my son's chest
Make him one of America's best
He'll be a man they'll test one day
Have him win the Green Beret

About war and music, how about his one from ABBA, written December 1981:

Do I hear what I think I'm hearing?
Do I see the signs I think I see?
Or is this just a fantasy?
Is it true that the beast is waking
Stirring in his restless sleep tonight
In the pale moonlight
In the grip of this cold December
You and I have reason to remember

Soldiers write the songs that soldiers sing
The songs that you and I don't sing
They blow their horns and march along
They drum their drums and look so strong
You'd think that nothing in the world was wrong
Soldiers write the songs that soldiers sing
The songs that you and I won't sing
Let's not look the other way
Taking a chance
'Cause if the bugler starts to play
We too must dance

What's that sound, what's that dreadful rumble?
Won't somebody tell me what I hear?
In the distance but drawing near
Is it only a storm approaching?
All that thunder and the blinding light
In the winter night
In the grip of this cold December
You and I have reason to remember

Soldiers write the songs that soldiers sing
The songs that you and I don't sing
They blow their horns and march along
They drum their drums and look so strong
You'd think that nothing in the world was wrong
Soldiers write the songs that soldiers sing
The songs that you and I won't sing
Let's not look the other way
Taking a chance
'Cause if the bugler starts to play
We too must dance

Soldiers write the songs that soldiers sing
The songs that you and I won't sing
Let's not look the other way
Taking a chance
'Cause if the bugler starts to play
We too must dance

Hi all

Listening to Soldiers by ABBA sends a shiver up my spine.

Agnetha's vocals at her best.

Cheers

I Bombed Korea Every Night

"I bombed Korea every night,
My engines sang into the salty sky,
I didn't know if I would live or die,
I bombed Korea every night."

"I bombed Korea every night,
I bombed Korea every night,
Red flowers bursting down below us,
Those people didn't even know us,
We didn't know if it was wrong or right,
We didn't know if we would live or die,
I bombed Korea every night..."

THE CLASH LYRICS

"Rock the Casbah"

Now the king told the boogie men
You have to let that raga drop
The oil down the desert way
Has been shakin' to the top
The sheik he drove his Cadillac
He went a' cruisnin' down the ville
The muezzin was a' standing
On the radiator grille

[Chorus]
The shareef don't like it
Rockin' the Casbah
Rock the Casbah
The shareef don't like it
Rockin' the Casbah
Rock the Casbah

By order of the prophet
We ban that boogie sound
Degenerate the faithful
With that crazy Casbah sound
But the Bedouin they brought out
The electric camel drum
The local guitar picker
Got his guitar picking thumb
As soon as the shareef
Had cleared the square
They began to wail

[Chorus]

Now over at the temple
Oh! They really pack 'em in
The in crowd say it's cool
To dig this chanting thing
But as the wind changed direction
The temple band took five
The crowd caught a wiff
Of that crazy Casbah jive

[Chorus]

The king called up his jet fighters
He said you better earn your pay
Drop your bombs between the minarets
Down the Casbah way

As soon as the shareef was
Chauffeured outta there
The jet pilots tuned to
The cockpit radio blare

As soon as the shareef was
Outta their hair
The jet pilots wailed

[Chorus]

He thinks it's not kosher
Fundamentally he can't take it.
You know he really hates it.

I'm reminded of the Manic Street Preachers' song, Dead Yankee Drawl:

Bill and Ted and "Wayne's World" drawl
Just another dull fucking bore
Vietnam's cool now and even Superman's believed
Hussein in power as the media war retreats

Suck your honey until you choke
You are a mechanism of social control
Multinational aim of one world culture
Turning one dollar into another and another

Dead Yankee drawl hey we got your beat
Dead Yankee drawl hey we love Oscar
Smothering injustice seen through starving eyes
Tearing down a forest just to earn a buck

Killed off literature for sex and violence
Fed a generation the equivalent of silence
Dragged Jack down to self same bigotry
Passive acceptance of a consumer society

Fake sentiments tying up contracts
Making idols of guitars and haircuts
Multinational aim of one world culture
Turning one dollar into another and another

Dead Yankee drawl hey we got your beat
Dead Yankee drawl hey we love Oscar
Smothering injustice seen through starving eyes
Burning down a forest just to earn a buck

Dead Yankee drawl hey we got your beat
Dead Yankee drawl hey we love Oscar
Smothering injustice seen through Red Indian eyes
Sideways walk of some Hollywood lies

Let's go down to Greenwich Village and desecrate
The Noraid slogans that justify six counties hate
Let's go down Redondo Beach and wax body company
Cos reality for TV is Disney not King, Rodney

Let's go to Indiana Youth Centre quickly
Tyson's money ain't as free as Junior Kennedy's

Yankee
Dead Yankee
Dead Yankee
Dead Yankee drawl

Written by Nicky Wire/Richey James

It's a great song that has a lot to do with this war in particular.
