Senator Ted Kennedy Tells It Like It Is

Kennedy Says Case for Iraq War Was Fraud

By STEVE LeBLANC, Associated Press Writer

BOSTON - The case for going to war against Iraq (news - web sites) was a fraud "made up in Texas" to give Republicans a political boost, Sen. Edward Kennedy (news, bio, voting record) said Thursday.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Kennedy also said the Bush administration has failed to account for nearly half of the $4 billion the war is costing each month. He said he believes much of the unaccounted-for money is being used to bribe foreign leaders to send in troops.

He called the Bush administration's current Iraq policy "adrift."

The Massachusetts Democrat expressed doubts about how serious a threat Saddam Hussein posed to the United States in its battle against terrorism. He said administration officials relied on "distortion, misrepresentation, a selection of intelligence" to justify their case for war.

"There was no imminent threat. This was made up in Texas, announced in January to the Republican leadership that war was going to take place and was going to be good politically. This whole thing was a fraud," Kennedy said.

Kennedy said a recent report by the Congressional Budget Office showed that only about $2.5 billion of the $4 billion being spent monthly on the war can be accounted for by the Bush administration.

"My belief is this money is being shuffled all around to these political leaders in all parts of the world, bribing them to send in troops," he said.

Of the $87 billion in new money requested by President Bush for the war, Kennedy said the administration should be required to report back to the Congress to account for the spending.

"We want to support our troops because they didn't make the decision to go there ... but I don't think it should be open-ended. We ought to have a benchmark where the administration has to come back and give us a report," he added.

Kennedy said the focus on Iraq has drawn the nation's attention away from more direct threats, including al-Qaida, instability in Afghanistan or the nuclear ambitions of North Korea.

"I think all of those pose a threat to the security of the people of Massachusetts much more than the threat from Iraq," Kennedy said. "Terror has been put on the sidelines for the last 12 months."

Its amazing he was sober long enough to open his mouth let alone form 1/2 way coherent sentences (probably written by some bimbo speech writer)even though they're full of typical 'Rat hogwash.

The topic is Iraq.

No, the topic is Ted Kennedy.

He has NO credibility in "telling it like it is" until he comes clean on what happened in 1969. Your concern for that dead girl who COULD have been saved by Ted Kennedy should outweigh your love of his liberalism.

Actually 1969 really has *no* bearing on discussions about Iraq. If ad hominem argumentative fallacy is your thing, by all means, please continue with the illogical banter.

I just find it the height of hypocracy for anyone to quote Kennedy as "telling it like it is" on any topic. A woman died for heaven sake.

I just hope this issue sticks to W Bush up until the 2004 elections.

Fmr. President Jimmy Carter also had some interesting remarks on a related issue.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/09/18/elec04.prez.carter/index.html

Interesting how both man were affected by Middle-East conflicts in 1980. Carter lost partialy because of events in the Middle-East and Senator Kennedy challenged Carter in the 1980 Democratic Primary.

What Ted Kennedy said is not new.

A significant percentage of the American population believed the "wag the dog" scenario.

As far as Ted's credibility goes, millions of Americans vote for him. And countless millions have benefited from the bills he passed. Its easy to blabber on about the spectre of Chappaquidick from your Canadian warren (its amazing how much the milk of kindness from the right keeps flowing for Mary Jo - if only other women could have received the same), but Ted's legislative record speaks for itself as much as his silence on that poor dead girl has deservedly crushed his nascent bids for the presidency.

Besides, yyz, Ted's a Senator in our Senate (which gives him all the right to speak on the state of OUR country, just as much as Trent Lott had the right to shoot his mouth off), its our goddamned war and its our goddamned President pulling the wool over our eyes. Isnt there a scandal involving Brian mulroney and a bison somewhere?

Yyz717, "Mary Jo Kopechne RIP". Yeah right. What if she was in a car accident with a Republican? RIP my arse. Your beloved Dubya is the only president in the history of the USA to enter the Oval Office with a criminal record. His crime? Driving under the influence (of?).

Oh, you're pulling my leg, right? HILARIOUS!!!

How many times has he been re-elected? Unless people from Massachusetts are just stupid, which I doubt...

I've made my point. People need to be reminded about his role in killing MJK. As for being the "people's choice" as a Senator.....any rich bastard can run for the Senate. All I see is silver-spooned obesity & irrelevance.

Isnt there a scandal involving Brian mulroney and a bison somewhere?

*chuckle* After watching Ben Mulroney host Cdn Idol, I would not be surprized.

Yyz717, "People need to be reminded about his role in killing MJK." But you'd prefer it if he didn't remind anyone about Bush's role in killing a few hundred US servicemen and about 12,000 Iraqis?

You ARE having a laugh, aren't you?

Irrelevance? Ted Kennedy?

If he was irrelevant he wouldn't be inviting the usual "foam at the mouth" dreck from his opponents. THe truth is that Ted by his sheer legislative achievements holds more power and pull than all of Canada can.

THe truth is that Ted by his sheer legislative achievements holds more power and pull than all of Canada can.

...and yet, his actions in 1969 led to the death of a young woman. A man from a lesser family may have been charged with manslaughter.

Keep in mind his past actions when listening to his current words.

Hon, I suggest you do some legal research on manslaughter in the United States before you condemn Ted.

Might I add that Chappaquidick has no way to compare to the many killed (many American) as a result of the Iraq situation... Funny how Bush now wants some secrets sealed until he is DEAD!

Ted Kennedy's comments do not help those who have legitimate concerns regarding the war(fyi i dont) because he is discredited. Him preaching about the dead is like monica preaching family values.

This argument seems rather hypocritical when coming from the same crowd who think that Bush bought his way into the White House via Ol'Boy's network, etc.

Bush's war caused the death of thousands of Iraqi civilians (latest count is approaching 10,000), regardless of motive. I hope that he wasn't lying. If he was I think the credibility argument goes out the window. Could we stick to discussing Iraq and the comments made rather than attacking the commentator. It shows lack of a counter argument when you get personal against the person making the argument.

Well, since this thread has been revitalized, I guess I'll chime in with not only disagreeing with Ted Kennedy, but also state that I think he's gone a bit overboard with accusing the president of outright fraud, a statement that even his demo cronies, when asked, almost to a person, opine the same. Even his most friendly supporters are (rightfully so, I think) distancing themselves from his current rhetoric.

I realize that the thrust of this topic shouldn't be one of shoot the messenger, but since it's been introduced already, and since I have the lowest regard for Senator Kennedy because of his historic pandering to alienated peoples who thrive on the dependency of the government to satisfy their every wants and needs, I'll say that I am automatically suspect of any of his opinions, anyway..Jack

B747forlife...my point about Ted Kennedy exactly. Get on the bandwagon; don't worry about the horse bein' blind, just load the wagon. It's flip-flop at convenience, and whether or not I thought his Sept. 27, 2002 quote had any credence, I would tend to file it in the refuse container because I have a difficult time not considering the source...Jack

Ted's debatable personal short comings aside, don't you think one is still capable of telling the truth?
If it's raining outside and W Bush said it was raining, I'd believe him.
Although he could say it's sunny and half the people and Fox network would believe him.
