Legal Drinking Ages

Thu Oct 16, 2003 1:20 pm

What are the legal drinking ages in countries across the world. Here in the US it's 21, but what about everywhere else?

Cheers,

For the rest...

Alberta 18
Québec 18
Manitoba 18
Newfoundland 19
Prince Edward Island 19
Nova Scotia 19
New Brunswick 19
Ontario 19
Saskatchewan 19
British Columbia 19
Yukon 19
Northwest Territories 19
Nunavut ???

In Germany it is 16 for beer, wine and sparkling wine, the legal drinking age for booze is 18.

In Switzerland, officially it's 16 for "light" booze, like wine or beer, and 18 for the harder stuff.

Unofficially, if you are old enough to reach the bar you can drink  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

It's the same here in Germany, I remember that I bought a bottle of beer when I was 14.

I just saw that Zak already posted the legal drinking ages in Germany before I did, seems that I have to drink an other coffee to realize things  Smile/happy/getting dizzy.

Here in Aus it is 18, would be terrible to live somewhere where the legal age is 21. Here in Aus you can't drink under age in licensed places but places like South Africa if you are with parents you are ok.

The US is afraid of their next generations' actions, that's why it will never be lowered.

I say lower it to zero, that way the idiots die off (cuz they don't know when to stop) and the smarter (light drinkers) will live on.

Same with illegal drugs. That way we can funnel the wasted money into something else.

It's legally 18 in the UK - which is normally strictly enforced. Indeed, if you look under 18 you'll invarably be asked for ID and if you don't have it or if it's unsuitable you won't get in.

I think, in the UK it is 2 (or 3, I can't remember which) on private premesis, then 16 at restaurants (with a meal) and 18 to buy alcohol.

To buy it in bars, restaurants, clubs etc. it's 18

.. but to buy in shops and the likes, you only have to be 15. And it's well known that some shops sells to kids who are only 13, but because the kids borrows ID from older kids, they can buy it anyway. And for that reason, the secretary of health is trying to introduce a picture ID that has to be used when purchasing alcohol.

The approach to drinking is more of a cultural thing. I was amazed when i visited a friend in Canada over summer and their approach to alcohol. He had a small party, and his fridge was stocked full of ice cold molsons. Here in the US, if u leave a bunch of 17-18 yearold kids around with that its gonna be empty in minutes. No one at that party had more than two beers. All the kids in the states binge drink. This is mainly due to the laws, I would suspect. If children were introduced to alcohol correctly, don't think there would be nearly as many problems here in the US.

I believe it should be the same age as that of military service..I used to get so pissed off when I would come home on leave and not be able to get a drink at a bar...Pretty damn good I thought, I can die for my country a 17 1/2, but I can't get have an alcoholic beverage...

During my trip to England (at the ripe age of 17.5), I was never once carded or questioned, nor were any of my friends with me, some of whom look much younger than the 17 that they were...Thus I was under the impression that they were very loose about it there compared to the US, where the rules are tight and generally enforced...

In Italy there were no actual limit until some weeks ago... I ordered my first beer in a pub at 14 and the first heavy drink at 15/16! No limit for buying it in retail store either. It's up to the bartender to refuse eventually to sell item to younger clients... now there's a law, I think it's 16 or 18 for alcoholic drink and booze and 16 for beer.

I agree with Greg that UK laws are very relaxed compared to the US. Since I was 16 I've only been asked for ID once - from my experience most pubs/bars aren't very strict.

In the US some restaurant staff started having a go at me for just carrying a tray that had my Mum's bottle of beer on!

RockyRacoon is right on. The United States has an undersage drinking problem because we make it a problem. We "underagers" have a mentality of binge drinking in part because we know (at our age) it's illegal to drink. There is an air of "catch us if you can" when we drink. We have made underage drinking a problem.

In the US, states holding out on sub-21 drinking ages and lowering the Alcohol/Blood count driving limit from .1 to .08 ( funny how some think lowering the threshhold of lawlessness is supposed to reduce lawlessness isn't it? ) were threatened by the federal gov't with a withholding of highway funds. Would've been nice to see at least some states being fiscally idependent enough to call the fed's bluff...but 18-20 year olds aren't much of a voting bloc to counter the syron song of federal cash. In any case, MADD would've kicked their strident lobbying into high gear and forced the issue anyway.

The busy-bodies in the US won't be satisfied until the drinking age is 55 and the speed limit is 21 ( mph ).

Austria:

Soft Alcohol -- 16

Hard Alcohol -- 18

But if you are 14 it is hardly a big problem going into a store and buying a bottle of Vodka. (Been there, done that, even when I was 12  Big thumbs up)

About the ID'ing, I'm still proud that when I go out with some friends, who are 2-3 years older than me, they're asked for ID and I'm not  Laugh out loud

What really sucks is in OH is that I can get a DUI if my blood alcohol level is 0.01 because I'm under 21. Now that's crazy.
