Yeah so hard the "athletes" that participate in that sport spend most of their free time buzzed on monkey weed.. Sorry I never knew a frequent pot user that had motor skills worth a damn.

I'm not entirely sure you can reasonably compare batting in cricket and baseball. The England cricketer Ed Smith is also a big baseball fan, and he wrote a book on the differences in technique and skill between the two. One of his points was that the batter in baseball is more akin to the bowler in cricket, and the batsman in cricket is more akin to the pitcher in baseball. Whilst this might seem counter-intuitive, his argument was that the fundamental basis of baseball is for the batter to hit a home run, whilst the gundamental basis of cricket is to get the batsman out. As such, the pressure is on the pitcher not to give away a home run, and the pressure is on the cricekt batsman not to get out. In both cases, one mistake is hugely costly, whereas for for the batter or the bowler, one mistake just means they get another go afterwards.

If you think of it this way, it makes a bit more sense. In cricket the batsman is under constant pressure, every ball. The baseball batter on the other hand is not. In essence, he is not expected to hit every ball for a home run, whilst the pitcher is under pressure not to give one away every ball.

I would say that the cricket batsman is much more skilful than a baseball batter - the ball is aimed at him, you have inconsistencies in the pitch, the ball is arriving at around the same speed either on the full (easy) or off the pitch, it swings (curves), is aimed at the body and head as well as outside and staying in is difficult. On the other hand, probably more skilful than bowling, if a bowler gets hit for four or six it doesn't greatly matter, he has another go - if the pitcher is hit for a home run it is a disaster. The pressure is the other way around.

Thanks for the stereotype asshole, considering most of the weed smoking around my school is done by the football players...  Wink/being sarcastic

C'mon now; every sport requires its own set of skills that you have to master if you want to play at a very high level.

The guy who thinks that soccer doesn't require any special skill has obviously never played the game.

The guy who thinks playing baseball is easy has never played the game.

The guy who thinks playing basketball is easy is, well, he's right about this one.  Laugh out loud If you're 2,30 m/7ft 6in tall, you could probably play 10-12 minutes a game in the NBA and make 2-3 M$/year...

If you're a good gymnist, it doesn't mean you could be a good quaterback. And vice-versa.

But haven't you ever noticed that guys who are very good in one sport will often time be at least decent in many other sports. I know that Mario Lemieux, maybe the best hockey player of all time, is such a good golf player that he did consider trying his luck on the PGA.

And Michael Jordan played at least AA in pro baseball; not bad. I know many american football players were excellent track & field athletes.

But I do think hockey and soccer players need a more comprehensive set of skills (upper body and lower body strength, speed, power, hand to eye coordination, balance, endurance, flexibility, peripheral vision, excellent reflexes, etc).

And don't forget several NFL players and Track and Field athletes have been members of the US Bobsleigh Team. Basically for pushing and added weight, but mportant never the same.

No doubt its boxing. To be any good at boxing, it takes nerves of steel, extreme concentration, strength, speed, heart, etc.

And not much upstairs, either. Who in their right mind would willing go into a boxing ring and get the snot beat out of them for a few rounds?

You confirmed my point that there are few if any frequent pot users with motor skills worth a damn when you stated that most of your schools football team used pot. Emphasis on frequent. Also it should be stated the people I had in mind have been doing it for a few years. It takes a few years to kill off enough brain cells to show an effect.

Its football.. Get real.. Its a bunch of halfwits with criminal records slamming into each other.. So occasionally someone gets lucky and catches the ball.. So what? Maybe the running backs would be faster if they could start out carrying a television set. Worse yet after checking your profile I see you are still in high school.

You also never said if your team was any good or not.

Ok lets see here
Your argument: In the original post you insulted all skateboarders, in a stereotypical statement, about drug usage.
Reality: Not even close to all do.
Your argument: Proved by me where? I don't see it.

As for the football team at my school. They did quite well this year, until the Juniors who play football got kicked out for dealing weed (private school, not public where obviously, that wouldn't be a big deal). With half the starting offensive line gone, they lost in the first game of the playoffs.

Also what does me being in highschool have anything at all ?

Actually, of the sports I have participated in (soccer, rugby union, cricket and martial arts) I would say martial arts is by far the most demanding both physically and mentally. To that end I would say Muay Thai (Thai Kickboxing) is the most difficult to be any good at.

In terms of sheer natural ability required, well anyone who has watched the England football team of late will realise it isn't soccer Big grin so I would probably say motor racing or being a top ten world batsman in cricket.

Rugby Union is probably the easiest in terms of talent required (although it is by far the hardest sport Aussie Rulles footy notwithstanding (Gridiron's for pussies  Big grin )). Rugby Union requires one person who can kick, one who is really tall and can catch, 2 really fast wingers, one professional thug and 10 fat bastards. That's all there's to it! Big grin

Marching band isn't a sport, but you have to practically be a machine to survive the toughest drum & bugle corps. Living on the line of blackout playing trumpet makes it even tougher. This comes from a former marching trumpeter. However, I still do not classify marching band as a sport.

...yet, it is scored like figure skating, so an argument can be made that it is. Then again, the same can be said about high note duals between trumpeters. Now I'm outta here before I get laughed at.

However, the toughest non-sport is professional wrestling. Anyone who wants to argue against me can post a photograph of them carrying a refrigerator piggyback up twenty flights of stairs and throwing it over a ten-foot fence onto traffic below, then demonstrating diving skills. BTW, I hear Brock Lesnar is a damned good diver, don't know the credibility of that though.

The High school part is due to the fact that unless they were smoking their life away in grade school they have not yet killed enough brain cells to show any real damage. In college the results usually start to show and the motor skills not to mention the thinking capabilities go down the toilet. Wait a few years and you will see what I mean.

ElectraBob - don't make fun of curling until you've tried it! I curl three times a week and often instruct. Many times we have people come in who don't take it seriously - they always say 'wow, this is harder than it looks!' While it doesn't take the pure athleticism of many other sports, it really is challenging and very, very difficult to get good at. Get on Google and search for clubs near you if you ever want to try it - most clubs have open houses where anybody can go out and give it a try.

Hockey is really demanding. I'm a good skater and I tried it once and it was HARD. I almost peed my pants when I got on a breakaway. Nobody was near me and I couldn't even keep my head to get a clean shot on goal. Mr. Harlot plays hockey and if the smell of his gear has anything to do with how hard he plays, well, he plays pretty darned hard!

I am just now learning how difficult and demanding speedskating is!

Sports don't require talent, they are games until it becomes your job, by then it is not a sport. It is entertainment.  Smile

I almost forgot about this thread hehe. Ok so football players are idiots, yes, thats obvious. The thing is your comment was directed at skateboarders. At this age now (above 16) most kids who do weed and stuff like that have quit. The sport takes alot of dedication, and with all the kids that used to skate, and now smoke weed, they just lost it.

Not based on strength, but based on mental awareness, I would have to say both air racing and any type of car racing that exceeds 100mph, as both would be very hazardous to your life if you drift off a bit...in any of the ball/goal sports, you may get injured but chances of being killed are much less! There are times i wish i had a car that stood up to impacts as well as a NASCAR one does, but the interior comforts are then lacking!
