The Red Cross Rejected My Blood.

Fri Dec 12, 2003 5:02 am

Christ. All you hear from the Red Cross is "Waah! We're critically low on blood! We only hava a three-day supply of blooood! Blah blah blah blah more bloooood"

So the blood drive comes to my office today and I dutifully head down to the conference room to pony up a pint of A-. When I get there, the nurse hands me a binder full of disqualifications. I was disqualified because, get this, between 1980m and the present, I had spent more than six months in Western Europe.

Screw the Red Cross.

Yeah , that's pretty screwed up. If blood is suposed to be in you to give, then why won't they take it? Don't bother wasting your time again. Go somewhere else on your own behalf and give the gift of living.

I'm banned from giving any blood in the US, indeed so is anyone who's spent more than 6 months in western Europe (I think it's less for the UK). This is all down to CJD. In the UK, whole blood hasn't been used for a while now and real plasma is going to be (has been?) banned.

I'll bet every one of you would be screaming blue murder if someone you knew caught a disease from a blood transfusion, yet you complain when the Red Cross is screening people. It is NOT a personal insult. They are trying to protect the public(that means you) from disease. So that when you end up in hospital needing blood or plasma, YOU will be safe. Grow up.

Sorry, but there is something I don't understand, Avt007. What does being in Western Europe for more than 6 months in past 23 years has to do with having disease?

I'm not complaining, vCJD is a risk that needs to be addressed, and the US has enough potential donors who haven't been in Europe to cope.

Shouldn't stop you trying to donate or carrying a donor card though.

http://www.redcross.org/services/biomed/blood/supply/cjdv.html
They are concerned about CJD, or mad cow disease. People are dying from this disease, and the Red Cross is rightly concerned about keeping it out of the blood supply.

Because Europe has had BSE in cows, and vCJD diseases.

Well I remember that one day back in summer of 1991 I walked into my local Red Cross chapter, offering to donate since I remembered hearing about a shortage back then.

They told me..."sorry...but we don't take collections on Tuesdays."

I said to myself "well, they must not be hurting that bad if they can pick and choose when it's convenient to take collections."

I have not donated since then.

I woudn't mind if they screened my blood. I just get annoyed by being rejected out of hand. I donated a couple of years ago, last year too, I think, and they didn't have a problem with my blood, then.

I am ineligible due to having visited Thailand (malarial area) and having a Thai wife (apparently Thailand is a HIV risk even though HIV infection rates are now among the lowest in the world due to it now being a criminal offence to have unprotected sex with somebody who isn't your spouse). Go figure.....

They would probably screen you if you had a rare blood type. I was rejected because of hypertension. This of course was for my own protection so I didn't really complain.

Yes but the US didn't have something like 18% of the population HIV positive! The only way to get that number down was drastic measures - now the HIV infection rate is among the lowest in the world.

I had my blood rejected because there was still alcohol in my bloodstream from the night before... seriously.

My girlfriend was denied because she had spent more than five years in Europe, and because she had spent 90+ days in the UK in the past 3 years. My question is what about blood in the UK?

I used to donate; then got a modification, which disqualified me; then they relaxed the rules a little, making it possible to donate; then had some interesting holidays and was unable to donate again.

It would probably be OK to donate plasma / semen / fingernail clippings / whatever.

I know they ask if you have had unprotected sex with a man, so I guess thats why they rejected you LHMark

Fantasising about it doesn't count, though, so you can continue donating as long as you're a virgin.

I gave blood to The Blood Center http://www.thebloodcenter.org and I tested NEGATIVE for any diseases or viruses. I also have AB- which is the rarest blood type (At least here in the states anyway). They wanted to strap me in the chair and never let me leave.  Smile

My favorite is after I waited for like 2 hours to give blood, I get rejected because I had gotten a tattoo within the last 12 months. Never again will I wait to give blood.....

I really don`t understand the animosity towards the Red Cross. Like I said before- it`s not a personal insult. Relax! It`s not like a cute chick shot you down (not that it`s ever happened to me  Smile ). These people are doing great work to help others.

I really don`t understand the animosity towards the Red Cross.

Actually AVT007 the Red Cross lost the right to manage blood supplies up here due to their mismanagement/distribution problems & scandals surrounding Hep C scanning. Now it's managed by Cdn Blood Services whose asinine slogan is "It's in you to give". Every time I hear that I feel like calling up & asking them if they borrowed that slogan from a sperm bank or vomit collection service.

Yyz17, I'm aware of the whole blood thing up here, and that is why screening is important. Peoples feelings are secondary to the critical issue of health care.
I use the term Red Cross because folks from all over will be familiar with it.
I guess I'll add your name to the list of those with a beef with the blood collection gang..........  Smile

LOL! I thought it was in me so I could live? Oh well, I guess they know best. Obviously God screwed up and gave me alot more blood than I really need. And while we're on that topic, tell me more about this vomit collection. I'm expecting the flu soon and would like some more info  Big grin.

1) the carefully screening of blood is very important. Would you like to get a disease next time you get a blood transfusion?

2) to the ones anti the Red Cross: I wonder if you will still have the same opinion when someday your child or yourself will be saved due to a blood transfusion...

I have AB+ which means I can accept limited amounts of O, A, or B positive blood, but since I turned 17 I've given blood 4 times so far, because it's a good thing to do and unbelievably painless nowadays.

In other news, Mississippi State won the Transylvania Bowl this year. Mississippi Health Somethingorother holds a competition between Ole Miss, MSU, and Southern Miss for who can donate the most blood. We're the biggest school, but Ole Miss has been winning the last couple of years because it specifically states in Bully's guidebook that donations can only be taken on campus 1 day per month. The donation period is three days, though. This year they let them do it on campus for 2 days.

Next year, though, I'm not donating (on the last day) only 3 hours before the homecoming parade. That was a mistake. I didn't faint or anything, but by the end of the parade I was incredibly exhausted, and normally parades aren't that big of a deal (at least, if you're not fat, I guess).

The Reason is the the Nurses that take your blood are all volunteers so if there is no one that has the "Tuesday" off The Red Cross can not take your donation
