No, i'm (sic) just saying that since everyone looks at how the North Americans pollute with thier (sic) useless SUV's, why has no one looked at aircraft that consume thousands of gallons of fuel per flight.

I think that you might consider the fuel usage on an airliner flying 300 people from SFO-MIA vs the fuel usage of 200-300 cars getting 30 MPG. The aircraft will use less fuel.

But I am off topic. I want a Corvette as much today as I did in 1967. Not in the slightest. The last good looking Vette was built in 1967. At least this one looks better than the 1970s and 1980s travesties.

I think that you might consider the amount of fuel used to transport lets say 5 bus loads of people from LA to New York, versus the amount of fuel used to transport the same amount of people on an aircraft. The aircraft will use more fuel.

Pollute, possibly, I think that Diesel buses pollute less then most aircraft.

I was refering to the fuel usage. Still, a bus uses diesel, while jetfuel is almost 99 Octane, now that is a waist.

I'm in no way implying that Aviation is a problem. The only problem is that it has gone down since 9/11, unfortunately. I love to fly and if I had places to go, i'd go by airplane.

Sorry Jutes85. You are wrong about even buses using less fuel. A 747, or 777, or 767 or A330 etc will carry more people and cargo over 1000+ miles for a lower fuel usage than anything but a train or a ship. That is cost per seat mile or ton mile.

Mr. Fly ... Ford doesn't in fact design their own diesels, it is Navistar. In fact, the new F150 was supposed to have a new 4.0 or 4.5 turbo diesel designed by Navistar, and it was cancelled at the last minute. Why, I don't know. Here was a great opportunity for Ford to invest in diesels in a market where I am sure it would do well.

Also, the new 6.0 Powerstroke has been plagued with problems. There have been far too many that have ceased running already, due to manufacturing quality problems. I think it had something to do with some seal that let oil go to the wrong places, and causing the engine to quit. Now, I read this quite a few times in different places, so instead of telling me to provide a source, do some research on the net, and you'll likely find it quickly.

About GM using the Isuzu designed Duramax, well, good for them! Their old 6.2 and 6.5 were POS engines! GM had to do something, because their reputation with diesels was abysmal. Since they own part of Isuzu anyways, why not use their mastery of commercial diesel engines and put it to good use? The Duramax has been doing extremely well, and has proven very reliable and long-lasting.

But nothing, absolutely nothing will beat the Cummins. Rumours have it that the Cummins will be available in the Nissan Titan eventually. If that's the case, at least it will be in a good truck at last.  Big grin

What does this all have to do with the Corvette? I dunno. Still a very nice car for GM.  Smile

Alpha1, why is it that if somebody enjoys a nice car, it is automatically for "status", as you put it? I can tell you right away, I like many fine automobiles, but I don't care at all for the image that is attached to them. I also find it funny how you attribute the passion for automobiles as "childish." Your beloved country, the US of A owes much of its culture to the success of the automobile. There is nothing childish about that, and the Corvette is definitely one of the automobiles that Americans should be proud of. Whatever is designed into the Corvette will trickle down to the average vehicles that people such as yourself prefer to drive.

Superfly, the 7.3 is a fantastic engine. As far as I know, yes it is also a Navistar engine. The new 6.0 has had very serious problems, but I feel it too will live up to the standards of the 7.3 in time. Problems exist with every company from time to time. Maybe these problems had something to do with the smaller diesel for the F150 being canned.

I was sure I'll regret posting a pic of this Ferrari  Big thumbs up. The 308, 288GTO, F40 and of course, the most beautiful "low-end" Ferrari in my eyes too, the 355, would have suited better. But the nose of the C6 does look like that of the 360... which stays a real sports car, regardless of the not so esthetic (but terribly efficient aerodynamically speaking) nose.

If your in the market for a sports car and can afford one---buy one. Any car analyst will likely agree.
It's probably the most engine/technology combination you can get for the price.

As GM has stated before, they lose at least $10K on every unit sold because of the development cost to re-engineer every four or five years. So, it's not a cash cow....just a prestige vehicle for the moniker.

Like it or hate it...it's a decent value in terms of performance.

Visually, well...I'll agree with all of the above.

MEA310,

you're rigth  Big thumbs up

actually, the F50 had some flaws compared to the F40 at its time and the Enzo today. little things like vibrations due to the engine block playing the role of the rear chassis, not really something one is obliged to put up with for road use, and an engine not nearly as powerful as necessary to beat the Mclarn-F1, last decade's performance master, and still today.

Considering that it's as fast as or faster than either of their competing offerings, I doubt they find it all that funny.

I'd imagine they're not laughing considering that the Corvette is about half as much as the least expensive offering from Lamborghini or Ferrari.

I guess you don't know much about cars. The Ford Mustang was NEVER a competitor to the Corvette. That competed against the Camero now discontinued
The Ford GT is positioned against the Corvette.
The new Mustang is based off the Lincoln LS and Ford Thunderbird platform. Not at all an old design as you've stated.

actually the vette has a better performance/price ratio, but that's normal, the higher you go in performance, the exponentially higher you go in price. Those last few 1/100th of seconds cost the most.

I don't think they're laughing because the vette is in another market. Now in that market, it is a serious contender. However, again, those who want a European sports car rarely end up in a vette, and vice-versa. In any case, the vette market was never huge in Europe. Still, I always had respect for the huge V8. "culbuté". But I never like the plastic body.

Or a woman  Laugh out loud

I actually like the lines of the 05 Mustang based on the photos I have seen.

I thought the old 7.3 Ford Diesel was an International Havester Motor, like the older 6.5 was.

I still think the Cummins Diesel in the Dodge P/U's are the best Diesel motors out there.

I can't picture myself putting an Izuzu Diesel in anything, Maybe if I had to choose between that and an Perkins plant but the fact that Chevy is using it is not a selling point.

I thought Chevy a few years back had made a deal with Caterpiller to use one of their motors in their trucks?

My brother swears by the new Ford Diesel, which he drives in two of the fire trucks down at the local VFD. Problems with the Fords up here has been because of those new gaskets they are using in trucks, lot of blow past problems when they get really cold.

What the hell ever happened to Cork gaskets?

Still I might have got for the new 150 when I brought my 04 heritage in November.

Well maybe not, it still is the first year of production, and as they say in aviation, "Never fly the A model of anything!"

I do hope that smaller diesel is released. If Volkswagon could figure out how to build a diesel that would fit in a Rabbit/Golf, then you would think the big 3 could too.

For Dodge there is no excuse not to have a diesel in the Dakota, I know that Mercedes makes acceptable diesels for that truck, and they are part of the same parent company.

Chrysler will test the diesel market with the Jeep Liberty diesel. Depending on how that does, they will offer other diesel powered vehicles too.

The only drawback to me regarding the Duramax is it has a timing belt instead of a chain. This in the name of reduced engine noise.

With the number of TDi Golfs and Jettas being sold (here, anyway), I'm sure there is a market for day-to-day diesel engine automobiles... and not just as "work vehicles". Volkswagen has really civilized the diesel engine in their cars and many people are jumping on the chinsey consumption/mega mileage band wagon.

Nice update but it's more evolutionary, not a dramatic change from the C5. What needs to be improved is the quality, Consumer Reports surveys still show much worse than average reliability. Great performance bargain with reasonable gas mileage but the car needs a heavy infusion of build-quality. Without that, it'll never be truly world-class. Hopefully, C6 is a big improvement but if not, GM may have to explore its' Toyota connection for ways on how to tighten up fit and finish for its' sports car baby. However, ditching the hideaway headlights made lots of sense, don't know why the car persisted so long with those; it really looks better to me without them.

I disagree. It makes the car look more ordinary. Corvettes aren't supposed to look ordinary.
I think this was another typical penny pinching cost cutting move by General Motors. I doubt this had anything to do with performance and aerodynamics.
Now the headlight aren't much different than a Honda Civic or Mitsubishi Eclipse.  Sad
I support the women’s movement up and down!

RE: GM Unveils 2005 Corvette.... And It's Gorgeous!

Wed Jan 07, 2004 10:02 am

Actually Bruno, the 2005 Corvette will finally have a decent set of headlamps. Ever driven a Corvette over about 90 mph at night? I can tell you that it can be somewhat scary, even with high beams on.

The HID headlamps on the C6 will be up to the task of providing good, sufficient illumination for high speed driving at night. The C6 will also be able to flash the brights even when the headlamps are turned off, which is a nice feature when you want to get around somebody.

How they look, I guess, is a matter of personal opinion. I think they look great. Yes, it's clear that there are, shall we say, Italian influences apparent in the design, but then again, when you're putting exposed headlamps on a design that is so sleek, there aren't a whole lot of ways you can do it. GM managed to do it without looking too blatantly like the Viper or 360 Modena.
It's a new day. Every moment matters. Now, more than ever.
