Who Makes The Best Chocolates?

Wed Jan 21, 2004 6:43 pm

For me, it's got to be Swiss, preferably from some obscure family-run shop hidden somewhere in the back alleys of Geneva.
Your thoughts ?

Funny, as a kid I loved Hershey's, but can't stand it anymore...probably had too much of it.

Today it's Swiss, if we talk about large-scale manufacturing, and top of the line would be French, Bannat, one of these obscure family manufacturers... saw it on TV, found it in Berlin (KdW, where else  Big grin), tried it..and was totally enthusiastic.
Fortunately it costs a fortune, so I won't buy it all the time Big grin

oh, and I still have a faible for those 200gr whole-nut-dark-chocolate Cadbury's, don't know why really...

Surely it's got to be Belgian chocolate?

A quick question: is there any regulation on how much cocoa content U.S. chocolate must have to be officially called chocolate? In the EU most countries have rules which say if there is more than 5% substitutes for cocoa butter then the product may not be called "chocolate". The UK and Portugal (and Switzerland) I think don't adhere to this. You can taste the difference!

Lionidas of Belgium is the best chocolate I have ever had, although I have a soft spot for Ritter Sport.

Hershey's chocolate is like wax. You can jam a wick in a hershey bar and have light for three days.

I think the best is La Maison du Chocolat, from France. Their chocolate-covered orange peel is to die for, as are their glazed chestnuts (which I have to mention even though they're not chocolate). For praliné, I like Leonidas, from Belgium (in fact I get my coffee from their store every morning, and they include a free piece of chocolate!), and for truffles I like Teuscher, from Switzerland.

Godiva is also very good, especially considering that it is much more widely available than the others I mentioned. They have a new luxury (i.e., more expensive) line called "G" which is absolutely amazing, but only available in a few places (Neiman Marcus, plus a few Godiva boutiques) and often sold out. Definitely try it if you get a chance and are looking to drop a few bucks.

For mass-market chocolate, I like Lindt and Cadbury.

I have to admit I don't know Belgian chocolate, actually I don't know any chocolate from other countries than my own........

But if you're saying "Swiss Chocolate". Erm, there's probably a few hundred different Swiss chocolates. And don't take Toblerone ore some other mass product as The Swiss Chocolate.
Sell your car, go to Sprüngli and buy chocolate with the money and you know what chocolate is  Smile

Lindt is very Swiss, too (and there's 50 different ones...)

My favourite "chocolate" is either one with marzipan (english?) in it, I don't remeber the name, or the ones with liquors inside  Big thumbs up

The one posting Ferrero Rocher... I love them, they're one of the best.

One of my girlfriend's most disturbing assertions is that British chocolate is the best (she's originally from Scotland). I've tried it, its like American chocolate, nothing special at all...its all mass-produced crap. For me, its Swiss chocolate all the way  Smile

For me, the best are made by Pierre Marcolini, Place du Sablon, in BRU.
He is Champion du Monde de patisserie 96 (world champion)
His chocalates are not as creamy as the traditional Belgian chocolates. It is a good compromise between the Belgian and the good French (such as la maison du chocolat).
Pierre marcolini prepares very good sorbets and ice creams too.

Belgian chocolates are obviously the worlds best (that's if you talk about real chocolate and not some fancy flavoured candy). Godiva shops are found all over the world, especially the many Godiva shops in Japan come to mind, at extrordinary high prices. I remember seeing Godiva pralines sold at the Hong Kong Cruise terminal in Shim Sha Tsui at 30HK$ (!!) a piece. Some advice for those who didn't try Belgian chocolates yet... Guyillan, the sea shell chocolates are also Belgian, and found in nearly every duty free shop in airports all over the world, but IMO its taste is an insult to the high quality of Godiva, Neuhaus, Leonidas and the likes. SN Brussels Airlines treats their passengers with Neuhaus chocolates, atleast in Bussines class.

Seems like there are a lot of similarities between Switzerland and Belgium: Both produce great chocolate and both are pretty bad in operating a flag carrier...  Sad  Big grin

I think Belgium is famous for the dark (black) chocolates while Switzerland is more famous for the milk chocolates.

BTW, Switzerland has the highest per head consumption of chocolate, followed by the Germans...

I cannot argue with the proponents of Belgian chocolate. There was some place not far from Grand Place in Brussels that had the best chocolate we ever had.

Honorable mention goes to that "Mozart" chocolate that comes from Salzburg, Austria.

I would take a Fannie May Pixie over anything. It was pecans and caramel covered in chocolate and is amazing. Unfortunately the Fannie May candie company out of Chicago filed for bankruptcy and they announced they are closing their 200+ stores so the fate is the candy is uncertain at the moment. Also I have had some pretty good chocolates from Poland. Hersheys is fine, but nothing special.

Hi again

Here people liked him a lot and we would have loved to keep him. He is a nice guy and should have no problems to fit into the Stuttgart team. And yes he plays quite intelligent and is not only scoring with his head. I like Stuttgart too and he deserves his move; maybe it was a little bit too early. He has had only one good season now in Switzerland, before he was mainly a substitute or was lent to other teams. Sure, he is top scorer but I don't know if this counts a lot because Basle is mostly playing against some crap teams in the Swiss league.

At least I have a reason to watch the ARD Sportschau again now  Big grin  Big grin

Tell me what chocolate you eat and I will tell you who you are ! Chocolate = passion and the most passionate people about their chocolate are the belgians ! Sorry guys, I am trying to be politically correct but not when chocolate comes in the picture, then it's each for his own.

Neuhaus, Marcolini and Godiva are the best thing and yes I did travel around the world and yes I have tasted local products...

There is Godiva made in US but it ain't good if it ain't made in Belgium.
Leonidas is a nice product for tourists visiting Belgium and shopping malls around the world but not the best at all.
Ferrero Rocher is just candy and nice as such.
Cadbury is not chocolate but some oily derivative and ok as such.
Swiss chocolate is quite civilized but doesn't measure to belgian chocolate.
Romanian chocolate is the worse in the world I have tasted.
Hershey's is just candy too.
Arnott's Tim-tams and Mint Slices, I must say are a treat but are just biscuits.
French chocolate ? Pu-lease, does Siberia make good wine ? hahahaha  Wink/being sarcastic

Mass produced chocolate, I'm a fan of Lindt. Its slightly creamy which a nice.

However, if you want some real, serious, its worth the money chocolate Jacques Torres is the way to go. He has his own chocolate kitchen in Brooklyn and is a world famous pastry chef...but his chocolate is out of this world. Order anything off his site ( www.mrchocolate.com ) and you will not be dissapointed. (The spiced hot chocolate is amazing).
