Probabily Tomorrow I'll Buy My First Car

Mon Jan 26, 2004 12:50 am

I'm still in doubt but I'm almost sure that tonorrow I'll go to buy a new car.

I think my car MUST be German and must not cost too much, so I decided to buy a Polo.

On magazines there are pics of a renewed type of Polo but I0m not sure they'll be put into production.

I chose to buy a Polo 1.4 75 HP, 5 doors, confortline. Blue or silver. I0ll add the "climatic", not the "climatronic" and an "adequate" hifi system.

What do you think about it?

Nice car to buzz around towns but don't expect too much performance when trying to overtake someone.

I know that 75hp are not so many, but I think that they're perfect for that type of car, for that weight.

The 1.2 is underpowered and has only 3 cilynders, (same thing for the TDI 1.4), so I think that the most adequate is the 75CV. Unfortunately the 1.4 FSI is not sold in Italy, if it was I would have chosen that.

I tried to calculate the price which is about € 14.200,00, but I think to "reach" € 13.500,00, considering that I want to pay it immediately, I don't like to drive a car I still have to pay......

You could also consider importing a Polo FSI from a country where they're sold. Would be similar to the way my family's last car was bought, it's a Passat "re-imported" from Italy.

I dont know if it's your taste, but I had a Seat Ibiza the other weekend as a rental car. I was stunned at the performance of this little car. 75hp, top speed 195km/h, 0-80 (for inner city sprints) in 8,0 seconds. Nice interior, well crafted. Essentially this is a German car (as they are owned and operated by VW) so I'd recommend you take a test drive in this baby. Should be cheaper than a Polo as well!

Only the less informed and/or car ignorant ones. Anyone who knows cars (and I mean knows cars, not Ferraris and rice rockets) knows what a Polo is. Rumour has it that the GTI version will be introduced in the US or Canada.

I want to echo what StarFlyer said and lean you in the direction of the SEATs or Skodas. They're pratically the same car just rebadged and a whole lot cheaper.

The Polo looks nice. Though it is somewhat pricey IMO. I would probably also look at a SEAT or Skoda to get something cheaper. Same mechanicals, some platform, overall fit and finish reasonably close to VW standards.

As for a Polo or something similiar in NA... I will believe it when I see it. Given VW of America's notoriously slow rate of new product introduction we might see something of that size around 2007 or so.....  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

He just said all North Americans did not know what a Polo was.

I reiterated that only the car ignorant ones don't. That's it.

There is nothing wrong with being ignorant. It's admitting it that takes class. (e.g. I am totally ignorant when it comes to certain cultures, so I ask and/or read about it before I make an ass out of myself.)

Have you considered the 1.4 TDI version? The Polo is a nice little car well suited for Europe. I would try for the TDI version though. Keep us posted!

And yes, it would be nice to see VW bring the Polo to take on the Echo, Hyundai's, Aveos, etc etc. It is a nice quality product, but VW is probably not sure it could bring it in at a competitive price.

Speak for yourself. It is now clear that many of us know what the Polo is.

It seems like a nice little car, a knock-off of the Jetta. The styling is nice, and as long as you're happy with dishing out the money for that car, I, like many others, say go for it!

does the car have to be brand new for you?If so then you must go for the Polo but if no then have you looked at used and little bigger cars?im talking about 1-3 year old cars here they should loose theyr sale value in your country too that much that you can get one with the same price as the new Polo.Im just saying this because i had a small car and got boored to it pretty soon and it just was too small for me and my stuff..(Opel Corsa). Big grin

Well, we have a taste in cars.

About 25% of the American car buyers seem to have a taste in tanks.

Oh, and how many people bashing European "golf carts" have actually driven a small car like that? It can be a lot of fun, if you like to feel your driving.

I've driven a small car like that many times. I agree, you get a great feel for the road in them - when the road is warm and dry. When it's cold, slippery and with 2 feet of snow..... I'll take my truck.

How many times have you driven a truck with a V6, 4x4, so on? I enjoy it immensely. I get a great feel for the road..... I like to feel my driving, too - I also like to feel what I'm driving over.....  Smile

How do you even need 75 hp? That car has a maximum weight of just above 1,5 metric tons, so 75 hp is plenty of power! It's not like a car needs more than 150 hp to be a fun ride, geez!

Flight152, they buy based on engine size. Certain European countries, Italy included, are taxed based on engine size. Going from a 1.4 to a 1.8 for instance is a very expensive option in Italy. Also with fuel being so expensive, they have to get small engines to maximize fuel economy.

I have, Born in Europe, and drove the Yaris, Fiat Punto, Golf, Polo, Mercedes A Class, Citroen Saxo and the Renault Clio over the past year. I think generally the European car market is CRAP compared to the US. Its no fun driving a Polo when you know if you crash into something you have about 3cm of door protecting you.

For $17k I must say you guys get raped with prices. I wouldnt fork out $5k for that car here.

[email protected] Bobrayner....that was hilarious!

But seriously F.pier,
I think it's an awesome choice for a 1st car! Are you paying cash? Or are you financing it? You're lucky too! My 1st car was a banged up Opel Stationwagon..and after my share of american cars, Pontiacs, Buicks, T-Birds...the europeans (esp. the germans) do have great taste and make great autos! -- except the French Citroen (the old ones) -- what's that all about? After doing beemers, I'm about the change one Benz for another one! nothing but Uber Autos for me now!

Again, if that's the best deal you can find for the same model...great choice! And congratulations!

Well, I suggest not crashing into something! Ans passive safety is getting better and better, without the need of having several tonnes of metal surrounding you.  Big grin Yes, a crash Polo vs. Trailblazer won't ever be a nice thing, but we don't exactly have many Trailblazers over here.

"Great question, when the hell is the last time you have driven a Trailblazer, Grand Cherokee, Explorer with 4WD in snow? Try flooring your Polo on a redlight in snow and you shall find out what happens."

Errr... What snow? That's not a problem in many parts of my country. And if it's all an icy mess, no car will help much - the 40 tonne lorries blocking just about everything because hauliers are too cheap to buy snow tyres will certainly provide for that! And why should I floor my car on a redlight? Just to show of? Sorry, but I actually do know that driving on a slippery street is not the same as driving on a dry one. And no car can make it that - it's the street, not the car, that does the trick in this case.

But anyway, cars aren't exactly the thing you or I should get fired up about. Big grin

And no car can make it that - it's the street, not the car, that does the trick in this case."

I honestly dont know where he lives, BTW IF there is ice 4WD helps alot, your front tires could be sliding on ice while your back ones are not on iced surface. Consequently with 4WD they can give traction to the car unlike in FWD or RWD (Trust me RWD is not fun in those conditions) Show off what? I didnt say it was for showing off just for comparison. Living in Chicago, I can say that I probably know more than you what a nice snow dump can do to your car.
