Well, the journalists that take votes on these polls look at an extremely wide range of parameters, from ecology to homogenity to practicality to performance...

I would like, however, to point out that the new Mercedes SLR McLaren:
1- uses the same supercharged V8 as a basis for its engine, and not a new engine of its own (or a supercharged V12)
2- uses an automatic transmission only.

Therefore, in my very own personal view of things, this car is not a worthy competitor to the Ferrari Enzo/Porsche Carrera GT, as its marketers and price would have liked it to be, and most most certainly isn't anything close to a successor to the eternal 1995 MclarenF1 and its V12, its 360Km/h maximum speed and 19.6s on the 1000m from full stop.

I love the new E5 AMG E-class. But other than that, I am failing to really appreciate any of the new Mercedes Coupes.

Isn't that the new A6 (not yet out) in the picture in the luxury class section?

Mercedes SUV's aren't imports. They are built in Alabama...by rednecks.
Hence, all the ML's you see swarming in the MB service bays.

They have the worst reliability rating of any Mercedes.

friend of mine worked at a MB callcenter for employee owned car tech support. we once talked about cars and he also said 50% of the problems were ML related. makes it look crappy especially in comparison to how little numbers of ML's are owned by MB employees in europe in comparison to the other types.

Greg

Make sure you specify the Mercedes ML, so some don't confuse the Mercedes G, which is not built in the United States.

I don't like a single car on this list.
Then again, I don't like any of the new German cars.

The G series MB is a boutique vehicle. It doesn't even warrant discussion. It's looks are a blemish on the otherwise nice, consistent MB styling (BMW take note, please).

It was imported to the States only as a reflex to the Hummer and to substantiate claims that Mercedes did not have a true off road vehicle (which, of course, is exactly what the G series is).

It didn't work.

The problem with readers votes is that they usually vote for what they have at home (because it's what they know).
I prefer Journalists votes (or was it ?).

It's like the customers votes for computer hardware. That's an exact image of the market shares of each brand, unless they are pissed off by some hardware failure.

That list looks a bit biased towards German cars, I wonder why?  Nuts

Greg,

the Mercedes Geländewagen is not exactly an SUV - it's an actual utility vehicle built for people like rangers, which I assume is what you meant to say. Hence, there's no way it could ever compete with those flashy-stylish-"won't ever get off the road"-leather-wood SUVs à la Mercedes M-Class, BMW X5 or Audi allroad quattro.
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

Right...that's what I was saying. It really has no business here in the States---unless the Army needs it!

I don´t consider Germans car to be "best".
I miss the Mazda RX8 in the Upper middle class category.
As for the award worst Mercedes, I think the A-klasse (not for sale in the US?)
has put off many Mercedes owners for buying another Mercedes...

I don't know about Sweden, but the RX8 is hardly considered 'upper middle class' in the States.

It's a discount sportscar. Although I understand it to be very capable.

Right...that's what I was saying. It really has no business here in the States---unless the Army needs it!

Actually Greg, the G-Wagon is being bought by the USMC to replace their remaining M-151 Mutts (the jeeps with the horizontal grill)

They are gettting them because they actually will fit in the backend of a CH-53, A Humvee in comparison has to be sling loaded.

Also, Canada is getting the to replace those rusted out Iltis trucks of theirs.

Would surprise me to see some Candian surplus G-wagons heading south in a few years.

Frankly if they where to come up with a no frills civilian version off the canadian assembly line, they might be able to make a go of it. It is a decenct member of the "Jeep" type of vehicles, which includes the G-Wagon, The Jepp CJ and Wranglers and the old Toyota Landcruisers.
