Cockle-picking

Mon Feb 09, 2004 10:13 pm

Okay,
So I could quit my lousy job and go cockle-picking, making £1300 a ton!
If I got about 10 people & paid them £20 to pick cockles with me all night, I reckon I could pick a ton's worth, what do you think?

I think I've found the niche in the market!

The thing is those poor people who died were probably only being paid the equivalent 20 quid a night. Not sure you've found your niche after all.

There is that song with lyrics "Picking Cockles and Muscles - Alive-Alive-Oh" Suddenly not so PC.

I'm from Morecambe (scene of the events - I could see the searchlights from my house on Friday evening!). The way the news is at the moment implies that you as the cockle picker won't be making the money - you get 10p an hour and accomodation in a crowded apartment in Morecambe (which you don't want, trust me!  Big grin). The ganglords who apparantly run the cockle picking trade around here will get most of the money!

And no, I have no idea who eats them either!!!

I heard this one today. It didn't take long.

Two sharks were swimming in the Irish Sea. One says to the other "I'm sick of eating mackerel, how about we go to Morecambe for a Chinese?"

Seriously though, you have to feel sorry for the poor bastards caught up in it. I hope they catch these Snakeheads who are controlling it.

Why must it be snakeheads? The news reports I've seen don't mention anything like that...

Its sort of a poor man's oyster. A clam/mussel like shell fish that is in abundance in the Morcambe Bay area.

Saintsman, that was a funny one! Big grin

If a cockle is anything like a cock, I'll be sure to try them.
