Chinese people are quite reserved, busy and could be arrogant.
Few of them speak english but it depends where you go ofcourse.
I recommend that you order a package-tour in Canada with all included.
Guide, airfare, hotels, meals and tours around the country etc. Got to your travel agent. They could help you!

I've traveled to China extensively.... I couldn't disagree more with Bofredrik. The people are wonderful- certainly not more arrogant than the Western tourists "viewing" them.... I highly recomend NOT TAKING a tour and doing it own your own...

China is an enormous country, you simply can't see it all in one trip. I would settle on an area and then work from there. Hong Kong is a great place to start and then you can work inland to Guangzhou, Giullen and Yansghou. That is my favorite China itinerary...

Of course there are other cities worth visiting like Xian, Chengdu, Lhasa, Shanghai, Beijing, Macau.... just pick one area!!!!!

There is an increduble travel bulletin board site called the THORN TREE at I can't stress how helpful this website will be to you.

"Wilco", you travel a lot to China. This person seems to be going there for his first time. That is a big difference. What to recommend... AND! People are rude in China.

Yeah Wilco, I have to agree with Bofredrik here...

...for a newbie, he'd be better off getting a package deal.

As far as the arrogance: too right, I couldn't imagine a bigger bunch of snobs (mainland).  Yeah sure
I've been studying Chinese for nearly 10 years now, and each and every time I attempt to mingle with locals, they act as though they're insulted that I attempt to speak their language (how badly I butcher it is of course beside the point).

Concordeboy makes a good point; for a first visit, a package might be better.

I organised my own holiday the first time - it's nice to pick and choose only the things that you're interested in - but there are greater disadvantages to this in China; obviously, the language barrier is quite high, and it can be harder to research some things (off the tourist trail) in advance, &c &c.
