Is this for real? There's nothing in the answer to Q1 that comes as any surprise - the US (and the West at large) has committed enough atrocities against Muslim nations to expect some kind of blowback (Palestine / Israel, Iraq, Lebanon, support for repressive regimes in Saudi, Iran, support for repressive but pro-Israeli regime in Egypt etc etc = 9/11). And the point about civilians being fair game is an interesting one. As long as civilians pay taxes and have the power to choose their government, it's hard for them to be completely innocent if their chosen and bankrolled government commit acts of aggression against foreigners. (If a tube train blows up and kills or maims a friend or an employee or myself, I may change my mind on that point, although a friend of mine didn't make it out of the WTC and I still feel that we are responsible for the actions of our governments in a democracy.)
The answer to Q2
is bullshit - Al Qaeda and OBL
may appeal to a certain Muslim frame of mind but it ain't making any fresh recruits so I hope he doesn't expect to seriously win over anyone to Islam, any more than he would expect violence from the West to convert a Muslim to Christianity or Judaism.
It's hard to argue with the logic of this: "If the Americans refuse to listen to our advice, then be aware that you will lose this Crusade Bush began, just like the other previous Crusades in which you were humiliated by the hands of the Mujahideen, fleeing to your home in great silence and disgrace. If the Americans do not respond, then their fate will be that of the Soviets who fled from Afghanistan to deal with their military defeat, political breakup, ideological downfall, and economic bankruptcy." If the war in Afganistan caused the USSR
to crumble, I don't see why the USA is immune from the same fate in Iraq, which is why comparisons with Vietnam are misleading - the potential consequences of this current war are much more dangerous (complete defeat in Vietnam didn't affect the price of oil, for one thing). The USA may be in better shape at the start of the war than the USSR
was when it invaded Afganistan, but it scares me that some Americans think really really bad things can't happen to them just because they're Americans.
