RyanB741 - "mental problem i was fortunate to overcome" - i take it you mean the words repeated in your head over and over? Man that’s harsh.
Not wishing to rock the boat here, but i do them. And i don’t mean that in a flippant way. I'm not proud of it, but i don’t see why i should feel bad about it - i can do what i want to do, and if i'm having a good time, and not doing myself any real damage then why not?
I'll be specific.
Alcohol - used to go out and put 25 pints away over a weekend, that’s without the brandy chasers - that’s uni for you. Must have done some fearsome damage to my liver - as i was doing that pretty much non-stop for four years at uni, and less beer/more spirits before uni for a good four years prior to that. Would regularly spend seventy quid or so on beer if i could. Messy. I don’t drink any more and haven’t for eight months. I've lost three stone, and have begun saving money. I don’t feel the need for it any more. Diet cokes when i go out are fine.
Nicotine - used to smoke 20 a day. Don’t touch the stuff now, and my fitness has increased and my weight declined. I feel great, and don’t crave any more.
Solid (Weed) - Smoked an eighth every week on average at uni of solid alone and found my self tired and lacking energy and motivation the whole time. Difficult to get dangerously stoned - but i don’t smoke it now - its not a nice taste, and its always made me cough then go to sleep.
Green (Weed) - Smoked a lot in my latter days at Uni and grew my own for a year too (with no success i might add). I think green is potentially dangerous in that it can get you dangerously stoned if you smoke the bud heavily, and you find yourself hallucinating - its fun, but scary too - i don’t like not being in control. I also found it to be quite addictive - not always very pleasant to smoke either, though a LOT nicer than solid or soap block - mellower.
Pills - Nobody ever died of taking E. They may be allergic to aspirin (which dealers regularly cut the MDMA ((Pure E in powder form)) with to form the pills) and hence have an allergic reaction to it and die that way. They may take it normally and not drink enough and dehydrate and collapse that way. The biggest way E kills you is if you overcompensate and drink too much water - your body can’t cope and your brain swells up, you suffer a massive haemorrhage and die. E can’t kill you just like that. 25 MILLION pills are consumed in the UK EVERY WEEKEND and we have fewer than 6 deaths per year. Every single one of these are irresponsible and stupid – Leah Betts dies after taking NINE pills and sinking a bottle of vodka. To sober her up her friends gave her seven litres of water. What exactly were they thinking she was going to do? Of course the Media and press had her down as an innocent that some evil drug dealer had murdered – she killed herself by being stupid. Death by misadventure. Alcohol kills more than 20,000 every year in this country.
Pills let you dance all night. You are not angry, aggressive, off your head, or otherwise antisocial. People on pills don’t fight. They hug and feel a tremendous sense of well being, of happiness, and of liking and affinity with your fellow clubbers. It is a beautiful wave of feeling, you are never out of control or scared, you just have this amazing warm feeling. Music sounds better, light are brighter, and people seem nicer and more approachable. You are more confident, and fluent. You feel able to talk to people. You just want to dance and lose yourself in music you didn’t even know you loved. You cant stop smiling – and you want to hug people and let them know how happy you are. When you start to rush, you have a gentle wave of feeling across the nerve endings in your brain, as the excess serotonin is released, making your neck and all the back of your head feel as if you were orgasming, but without the urgency.
E works by making your brain release the serotonin that your brain stores, which it releases when you are in love, eat chocolate, have sex, or do anything else that brings great happiness. When the serotonin dissipates the effects of the pill wear off, and you have a lack of it – this is the comedown. After 24 hours or so, your levels return to normal. Of course, all things in moderation, and if you have been hammering the pills and kicking it too hard every weekend for a long time, then your brain makes less serotonin, and you can suffer depression in the long-term. It also stimulates your nerve endings, so, if you take too many – the really sensitive nerve endings in your brain don’t work as well – hence you may have problems getting an erection.
If you take too many, you will damage yourself, though in moderation, taking proper precautions, it will do you no harm.
There are risks. You have no idea what’s in the pill you are taking, so always make sure you are not taking the first of a batch. Get them from someone you trust, and make sure you only do a half of one at a time at first. Never, ever, carry more than a couple on you at any time – they are Class A’s and you can get ten years for possession if you are unlucky. If you do take them, don’t do more than three in a night as a rule. Also, try to drink a bottle of water every hour – whether you are dancing or not. Don’t do them on an empty stomach or you will see them again very soon. DON’T DRINK ALCOHOL – it dehydrates you and numbs the effect, making you want more pills, and want to drink more. Pills and alcohol are a potentially dangerous mix as the aforementioned Leah Betts found out.
But you are saying to yourself “No, I don’t care what he says they are dangerous and wrong and I’m not doing them” – fair enough. I’d venture that ten pints of lager and a kebab are not only far, far worse for you, but also the thick end of £60 out of your back pocket. Pills are £4 each. Do the maths. Water is normally free. The press stigmatises drug use and rightly so – I’m TOTALLY against coke, crack, GHB, LSD, Acid, Heroin, 2CI, Crystal Meth, Magic Mushrooms, Ketamine, Vallium, Poppers, very strong LSD laced green, and all the other illegal drugs. They are highly, highly dangerous and can kill you. They should be illegal, and anyone who does themselves damage while taking them, mentally, physically, emotionally, or legally has only themselves to blame. No amount of education can stop the risk.
But the government does not do enough to help. Fair enough crack down on the drugs I mentioned above – but take steps to ensure that kids know the risks and know how to stay SAFE if they are doing pills. The majority of teenagers will do it at some stage, and only through education and information will they know how to take them safely. Its no use pretending they don’t do it. If you tell them not to are they going to listen? Hardly.
Introduce Ecstasy testing kits in nightclubs as they have been doing routinely in Holland for many years. If it’s a dodgy pill then you’ll know then and there and wont spend an evening throwing up – or if youre allergic to aspirin, then you’ll know not to take it. Alert people to how much water they should be drinking. Provide proper chillout rooms for people to get a breather from dancing. Nobody will die then, unless they are terminally stupid. That’s my view of ecstasy. Its not a mainstream one, and I suppose its not a very legal one, but its based on fact and experience – I’m a DJ
, and have been clubbing for ten years. Trust me I know a thing or three about E.
I'll say this.
You say its wrong and you wont do it. The idea does not appeal to you, and you dont want to hear about it. I'm an idiot and irresponsible for saying that its ok (if youre careful). You are entitled to your opinion, but dont ever think that you know better about something you've never tried. I'm not saying try it - as personal choice and freedom is a cornerstone of living in the free world. You just go back to your 20 a day ciggie habit, your 20 pints of lager in a weekend, and your Aftershock chasers, and your kebab on the way home. If its what you want to do then do it. Be careful though.
All things in moderation.
