RE: The Fabulous FRA Meet - Part 1

Wed Oct 06, 2004 1:26 am

Sorry, my last post was a bit confusing. I did actually meet 2 different meets at 2 different locations. My only problem is that I can't really afford 2 meets at the moment.

P.S: Bob, not a bad idea at all!

So you actually think that 2 meets 2 months after each other at the same airport is a good idea? Big grin

Hmmmm, thinking about it, I'd rather go to FRA over DUB, and I think that for now only 1 meet would be a good idea. But thats just me.

When we went to MAN, Sander thought about an AMS meeting there and then. So maybe we could decide about another meet, when we go to this one?

Well, thanx Patrick! But I have already non-confirmed seats with LH and the side trip to SIN was included in the ticket price. I think the flight to SIN is with a partner airline and that would probably be SQ. I don't know the details yet.
My friend's fiancee lives there and she probably knows the places to be. But I'll keep your offer in mind.
I am BTW considering a cheap flight from Macau to anywhere nice. Phuket maybe? Air Asia is dirt cheap to BKK.

Back to the topic.

Shouldn't we have a decision very soon in case thousand other ideas pop up and no one knows what to do anymore and we will never get anywere.
I say DUB in February and FRA in April.

Anyone?

DUB being more expensive than FRA, my choice is for FRA either in Feb or the first March date

Hi folks,

let me add some facts to the weather discussion.

On http://www.weatheronline.co.uk you can find a big climate databank, showing figures of the last 10-22 years.

That means:
The average temp for FRA in February between 1994 and 2004 is:
3.9C
and for DUB:
6.1C

Now guys, draw your conclusions!

Daniel

Well done Germany!

To all,

Although not everybody has had a chance to vote for one of the dates or have a preferred date, we think it already gives a clear idea by now:

19/20 February
26 people

12/13 March
22 people

19/20 March
23 people

9/10 April
28 people

Close call, I think it is fair to say that there is no obvious winner...
We would like to thank you for voting and let us know your preferences.

From the input and feedback you gave us, we have some considerations:
- people from over the atlantic prefer a February meet because of the fares and seat availability,
- a February meet could be held at DUB because of the milder climate there,
- people point out that there is lots to do and see in FRA,
- people from the mainland are concerned about the weather and cold conditions in FRA during February and prefer April,
- there is a large number of people who can attend the weekend of 19/20 and 9/10,
- there is a large number of people who don't really care about a date, as long
as there is a bar,

Like Sander already said, before we get even more dates and plans, we should
really come down to a choice.

The alternative plan of a 19/20 Feb weekend in DUB and 2 months later a 9/10 APR meeting in FRA sounds very reasonable, something for everyone! It looks like there will be slightly more attendees at FRA (it would be very nice if as many people could go to FRA, as there were for AMS). We would love to continue with making plans for the 9/10 april FRA meeting.

Later next year you can mark your calenders for the Paris meeting and hopefully in August/September we have a chance to do a meeting outside Europe (like New York), or what has been proposed (although there haven't been any serious thinking going on about it) an AMS revisited meet.

Thank you again for your voting and patience. This is getting a very hard decision, because different people want to do different things. But realistically, it is impossible to please everyone.

Only one problem with the April meet... I can't do it. School vacation isn't for another week, so February is my only option. But, if you guys want April, could we try to do it the next week? If not, I understand, and there will always be more meets.

Well Dan, DUB is full of nice little pubs our A.net group could invade!  Laugh out loud

Anyway, I thought the meaning of the meetings is not just to go for spotting. I can go spotting alone too and whenever I want, I don't need 30 A.netters behind my back for that.  Big grin

I could do however DUB in Feb and FRA in April.

Now guys, draw your conclusions!

Why are we discussing DUB again, I thought we'd already thrashed that out and decided on FRA? We'll never get anywhere if we can't make a firm decision!

Lets not forget that this get together is not just for the convenience of the European's but we also have a good number of interested people from other parts of the globe who have said they are interested in FRA but who may not find it as easy or cheap to fly to DUB. Maybe we should hear what they have to say before trying to move the goalposts again.

Hello

I am posting this on behalf of QIguy24. He wishes to attend the meeting too. As for myself, don't know yet if I can come. But I'm in no hurry because from my location I would most likely take the ICE train to FRA (because Lufthansa BSL-FRA-BSL already costs around 330 Euros). Passed through FRA yesterday and it's a great airport.

Someone asked how long it takes to go by car from AMS to FRA, that's around 4 hours when driving at civilized speeds. Of course there are no speed limits on the Autobahn, so it can be done rather a bit faster! Big grin

I'll be driving there as well from Den Bosch so if someone wants to go along they can reserve seats. Only 3 passengers tops. I don't want to overload my car as I did at AMS! There the wheels where scraping the wheelarches and bikers where overtaking me!  Sad

Just as a side note for those in the UK:

Out of curiousity I had a quick look at DUB flights for Feb 19/20 and from MAN the fares are cheaper with EI than with FR, could be the same from other UK airports so its worth bearing in mind.

For those who were thinking of flying to FRA from London you may want to consider flights from LCY as they are the same price on BA.com as flights from LHR or LGW (around £90 return). I'm likely to do LBA-LCY-FRA outbound, so long as the new LBA-LCY service doesn't flop and get axed before we meet!!

I'm terribly sorry but I have a change of mind.

I think 777Heavy has a vailable argument with the avarage temperatures for both FRA and DUB in February. 3.9C in FRA and 6.1C in DUB. Don't forget that DUB is situated near the sea and during winter the wind at such places can make temperatures feel much lower than they realy are. Maybe even lower than at FRA. It probably isn't very windy at FRA as it is quite land inwards. However winds from the east can be freezing in that time of the year if it blows from that direction. Besides I rather have snow than rain.

Another big plus is that traffic is much more appealing at FRA.

Therefore I say we concentrate only at FRA IMHO.

Best regards,
Sander

P.S. the spell checker isn't working.

Well,

I would give the reason for the greater variation in temperature being that Dublin is quite often cloudy with rain and so in winter it is slightly warmer as the cloudbase tends to keep the heat in from the day. At FRA it is more likely to be clearer for longer, and probably when it is clear the same temperature as it would be at DUB if it was also clear. So in that case there isn't really much difference between the two locations except FRA's weather is less variable (and probably much more chance of snow! Big grin).

Their pretty strict in Dublin for under-age alcohol. In fact if your under 18 you cant even be in a pub after 9pm even if your not drinking alcohol. Dont know about Frankfurt, but their's more pro's than con's to go there.

If you don't look like 12, you shouldn't have a problem getting a beer or some wine anywhere in Germany. Period. If they card you, they're either being anal or it's just not your lucky day - it has never happened to me, but I'm no hardcore drinker either; far from it.

As for a meet, I might be able to make the trip from Heidelberg to FRA on any given day, provided Uni doesn't take all my time. I hope I didn't scare you away all the way to DUB with that!  Nuts

I'd much rather be in FRA on a crisp, cold, clear winter's day than in DUB in the fog, rain etc. Standing around outside in the clear skies is much better than being out on a cold, foggy, murky day.

Also no problem, then simply try the next pub/bar, you will get a beer at latest in the 4th ot 5th bar because there are enough people who don't give a damn about the legal drinking age. Enjoy it, I did it also when I was below legal drinking age  Big thumbs up.

Well one thing is for sure and that is that i'm going to FRA. I don't know if i'm going to DUB, due to cash resources. I'd also rather a nice cold crisp FRA winter's day over a DUB foggy, mirky, rainy, shitty winter's day, but I do see that some people don't think the same way.

Whoever wants to go to DUB, somebody may need to organise that. I don't care when the FRA meeting is to be honest. I'm easy going with stuff like that and so I will just be happy as long as everybody else is happy. But as Erwin quite rightly said, it is impossible to please everyone.

well JRowson has a point, so no DUB I guess (no it isn't closed, tho there ain't a lot of support for it it seems).

If so, we are back at the beginning, do we go to FRA in feb, april or both?

Both may be a good idea

OK, seeing that we are having enough trouble rubberstamping anything at the moment, can't we agree to just concentrate on ONE meet at a time?

Well Erwin, on behalf of himself, Jradier and British767 thanked everyone for voting and asked us to post only our preferences from now on if I understood well.

One thing. If we decide to have the meet in February in favor of our brothers and sisters across the pond, we have to be pretty damn sure they will be here. No offense guys, as much as I want you here (It would be realy, realy great) I think non of us will be amused if you guys suddenly can't make it while we are standing at FRA or DUB in the freezing cold.

Just my €0.02

Sander

David, I am starting to agree to be honest. Sander, absolutely. I am having a very slight change of heart about the date. I'd like to give our american friends the chance to come over to visit FRA and attend one of these meets. I'm sorry to all those who don't agree with me.

Americans and Canadians - IF the meet got moved to February, would you all definitely go to FRA? Please tell us now.

Guys

the weather question is a real dilemma, but waiting and waiting won't solve this problem. And please keep in mind if we wait and discuss and wait again the airline fares won't become cheaper and thats particularly important for our overseas members.

And IMHO a meeting in FRA or DUB in February can be very cold, freezing, snowy, sunny, foggy, rainy, windy. Its winter! But isn't the get together and drinking together the focus in these meets?

And one thing is cristal clear, hotels and beer is much cheaper in FRA than in DUB!

And don't forget there is no bad weather just wrong clothes.

Daniel
Well done Germany!
