There are two versions I have heard about where the term "redneck" comes from.
One was that it was the white farmers picking cotton post civil war getting sunburned back there.
The other was that it was the same dirt farmers getting their neck rubbed raw from the leather plow strap that runs around the neck to control the horse or mule....sorry can't think of the name.
