Favorite 80's Song?

Wed Nov 10, 2004 2:53 pm

As I grew up in the 80's and that is some of my favorite music I will give you my favorite song.

*1985*
Simple Minds - Don't You Forget About Me
Song was made for the movie, Breakfast Club. I was 5 when this song came out and I really remember hearing it on the radio driving in my dads camaro. Oh those were the days!  Crying

I miss the 80's...

Sticking to mainstream music, I'd have to vote for:

3. Dead Man's Party - Oingo Boingo
2. Rock the Casbah - The Clash
1. Centerfold - J. Geils Band

And they're all STILL great party tunes. Any of you L.A. guys remember KROQ back in the early 80s? Talk about waves of nostalgia...

"You Dropped A Bomb On Me" by the Gap Band.....not the wimpy single version, but the album version....all 13 minutes and 15 seconds of it. Smile

I quit listening to pop music in the mid '80s, but the early '80s had some pretty good stuff....like....

"Crazy Little Thing Called Love"..Queen
"Bette Davis Eyes"...Kim Carnes
"Don't You Want Me"...The Human League
"Jack & Diane"...John Cougar
"Down Under"...Men At Work
"Africa"...Toto
"Jump"...Van Halen
"I Want To Know What Love Is"...Foreigner
"Abracadabra"...The Steve Miller Band

The worst '80s song has got to be "Physical" by Olivia Newton-John....UGH!!

Yep, I'll second Cyndi Lauper's 'Time After Time'. Now that was a great song.

'Hide And Seek' by Howard Jones was also a favourite of mine in the early-to-mid eighties.

Also, being the huge Genesis fan that I am, I'm gonna have to nominate every song off the 'Duke' album.....  Big thumbs up

While I had a few favorites of that era, the song I liked the most was probably
"Alive and Kicking" from Simple Minds circa 1985. I was a freshman in college back then. WHJY (FM 94.1 in Providence, RI) gave a lot of air play during my college years (1984-88).

"More Love" Nicolette Larson
"Miss Me Blind" Culture Club
"I.G.Y" Donald Fagen

As I was doing radio in that era, I heard some great tunes that never broke high on the Top 40...

"When Your Heart is Weak" Cock Robin
"Whenever Your on My Mind" Marshall Crenshaw
"Heaven" Eurogliders

I'm not sure when it's from, but the White Lion song "Little Fighter" is friggin cool. Damn good guitar solo.

"End" and "Mothers of the Disappeared" from the Joshua Tree are damn good, to name a couple less famous U2 songs. Actually, I like all the U2 albums from the 80s (and after).

The song "We All Die Young" that was in the movie Rock Star - I forget who did it originally, but that's another good one.

Of course, "Pour Some Sugar On Me"...how can you forget that?

Pantera's first major album, Cowboys from Hell, is kind of a mix of hair metal and thrash metal, and is another good one.

There are a few that still warrant a spot in my car's CD player:

"Its my Life" - The Talk Talk version (No Doubt's remake is good, but this is the classic)

"I Wanna Dance with Somebody" - Whitney Houston (the summer of 1987 was a party summer for me)

"Betty Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes (already mentioned in this thread)

"The Visitors" - ABBA (from their last album out in 1981)

Oh how I long for the day when the skies were truly Friendly!

"Mexican Radio" by Wall of Voodoo

Go ahead - I dare you. Just try not to sing along while you read the lyrics:

i feel a hot wind on my shoulder
and the touch of a world that is older
i turn the switch and check the number
i leave it on when in bed i slumber
i hear the rhythms of the music
i buy the product and never use it
i hear the talking of the dj
can't understand, just what does he say?

i'm on a mexican radio

i dial it in and tune the station
they talk about the u.s. inflation
i understand just a little
no comprende - it's a riddle

i'm on a mexican radio

i wish i was in tiajuana
eating barbequed iguana
i take requests on the telephone
i'm on a wavelength far from home
i feel a hot wind on my shoulder
i dial it in from the south of the border
i hear the talking of the dj
can't understand, just what does he say?

i'm on a mexican radio

what does he say?

Sorry PhotoLPPT,

That song (which lead into We Are the Champions) debuted in 1977.

LockheedL1011,

I still have the 45 for Mexican Radio; which came out in 1982.

Okay, here are some of mine. I think I have the videos for most of these, on Beta tapes somewhere!

"The Look" by Roxette
"Tainted Love" by Soft Cell. How can any 80s list leave this off?!?
"Mr. Roboto" by Styx
"West End Girls" by Pet Shop Boys
"The Reflex" by Duran Duran
"Red Red Wine" by UB40
"Chains of Love" by Erasure
"Time after Time" by Cyndi Lauper

Do any of the Canadians out there remember an obscure 80s song by Alta Moda called "Julian"? I wish I could find that song.

I'm not Canadian, but wasn't the name of the group you're referring to actually called Aldo Nova?

Their (Aldo Nova) biggest hit was (Life is Just a) Fantasy back in 82. Back then, a couple of Boston stations (94.5 WCOZ & 92.9 WBOS, these stations are now long gone) played a longer version of that song. I don't think that it was available an their album(s).

Too many choices, way too many choices:

Madness "Our House"
Dexy's Midnight Runners "Come On Eileen"
Big Country "In A Big Country"
Depeche Mode "I Just Can't Get Enough"
Aztec Camera "Oblivious"
Style Council "My Everchanging Moods"
Beastie Boys The entire "Licensed To Ill" album
The English Beat "Save It For Later"
Fishbone "Party At Ground Zero"
Modern English "Melt With You"
New Order "Bizarre Love Triangle"
Public Image Limited "This Is Not A Love Song"
The Dead Milkmen "Bitchin' Camaro"

Like with the 90s thread, I could go on and on, but here's my absolute favorite 1980s song:

PHLBOS, nope, there was a Canadian band named Alta Moda as well. I just did some research and found some info on them.

There's a lot of Canadian acts that never make it in the States. How about...

KonKan
The Box
Haywire
Gowan
Kim Mitchell
Glass Tiger (had some American success)
Jane Siberry
The Tragically Hip
Blue Rodeo
Cowboy Junkies

I could go on!

Here's a listing for any one who needs a memory jog:

http://www.afn.org/~afn30091/80songs.html

"You Dropped A Bomb On Me" by the Gap Band.....not the wimpy single version, but the album version....all 13 minutes and 15 seconds of it.

I see I'm not the only one with that in their collection  Smile (I can hear the air raid sirens right now). That, and I'll agree with Patrick Hernandez' "Born to be Alive" mentioned above, are in the dance LP's section of my collection. Anyone remember an early Bryan Adams dance song called "Let Me Take You Dancing" (late 70's I think), he taped it at a certain speed, and the record company speeded it up for the dance version. A funky record there.

As for my favorite 80's songs, here are a few samples:
"Betty Davis Eyes"-Kim Carnes
"Every Breath You Take"-Police
side A of Bertie Higgins "Just Another Day in Paradise" (includes Key Largo among others)
"Make Love Stay"-Dan Fogleberg
"We Two"-Little River Band
"Bobby Jean"-Bruce Springsteen
"Dancing in the Dark"-Bruce Springsteen

Tom at MSY
"The criminal ineptitude makes you furious"-Bruce Springsteen, after seeing firsthand the damage from Hurricane Katrina

Michael Jackson: Thriller
Pet Shop Boys: What have I done(to deserve this), West End Girls
Mike and the Mechanics: Silent Running
The Human League: (Keep feeling) Fascination
Joe Jackson: Stepping Out
Hall and Oates: Out of Touch, Maneater, Private Eyes, Adult Education, I cant go for that.
Ray Parker Jr.: Ghostbusters theme song

Der Komissar - Falco

Hmm...I have an "Awesome 80's" CD with that song on it, and they list the band as "After the Fire"?

Wow...so MANY songs...hard to pick a favorite!  Nuts

You Keep me Hanging On - Kim Wilde
Love Shack and Roam - B52's
Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves
Anything by the Thompson Twins!!!  Big thumbs up
99 Luftballoons - Nena (German version...naturlich  Big grin )
West End Girls and It's a Sin - Pet Shop Boys
Wake me up before you go go - Wham
Rock this town - Stray cats
Church of the Poison Mind - Culture Club
Anything by Huey Lewis

I could go on and on and on here...there will never be a music decade like the '80's.
And the winner for best actress is....REESE WITHERSPOON for 'Walk the Line'!!!!!!!!

A-HA "Take On Me"
Crowded House "Don't Dream It's Over"
Katrina And The Waves "Walkin' On Sunshine"

Although technically not '80s as it was recorded in 1991, but I'd have to add

Mylène Farmer "Désenchantée"

But ultimately there are just WAY too many to name.

PHLBOS: Although I have no idea of the band you were referring to, just to let you know 92.9 WBOS is still around in more or less the same format that it's always had. Although I never forgave them for giving up on their pledges to not holding stupid contests and the big one...NEVER TALKING OVER THE BEGINNING OR ENDS of songs. Although, I think those rules got thrown out when radio station ownership was deregulated and they became part of one of those national radio station companies.

Ahhh, yeah...good song! The woman who is in the video was also in 1981's "For Your Eyes Only", the 007 flick. She was blown up in the helicopter by the Lotus, which was underwater at the time.

Caroline Munro is her name, from the Reading, Berkshire, UK

Some good memories being triggered here!

I thought After the Fire did Der Kommissar....Falco had a big hit here with Rock Me Amadeus then sank without a trace.

Duke, Video killed the Radio Star was actually released in 1979 but it was MTV's very first video, on August 1, 1981.

My favourites would have to be:
Valerie (Steve Winwood)
Heart of Mine (Boz Scaggs)
Living Inside Myself (Gino Vanelli)
I Can Hear Your Heartbeat (Chris Rea)
The Way it Is (Bruce Hornsby and the Range)
Steppin' Out (Joe Jackson)
Purple Rain (Prince)
Endless Road (Time Bandits)

Hard to pick just one - what about.....

Aneka - Japanese Boy
No one is to Blame - Howard Jones
I Won't Let the Sun Go Down on Me - Nik Kershaw
China in Your Hand - T'Pau
Chain Reaction - Diana Ross
The Look - Roxette
She Sells Sanctuary - The Cult
Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns 'N' Roses
Funky Cold Medina - Tone Loc

Anything by Erasure, anything by Lightning Seeds, anything by The Beloved, and anything by Frasier Chorus.
