Hummus = Hamas?

Tue Dec 14, 2004 5:56 am

On a recent trip to a well-known LA deli, I was witness to a strange situation. A man in line in front of me pointed to the hummus and proclaimed, "I'll have a half pound of hamas." I'm not really familiar with such a pronunciation for hummus, which leads me to the following:

Is 'hamas' a valid pronunciation for 'hummus'?

If so, are the potential explosive gastronomic effects of hummus (hamas) any basis for the name Hamas due to the explosive acts of its members?

Maybe your deli is serving freshly cut terrorist.

Was the guy who ordered the 1/2 pound of hummus Hannibal Lecter by any chance?  Laugh out loud

 NutsThanks, WellHung, you just ripped the enjoyment out of eating hummus for me. Interesting concept though.

Its kind of like ordering Busch Beer. Its pronounced exactly the same as Bush and both cause a great deal of senseless deaths among young Americans....

Even bears prefer anything but "Busch"...

Its definitely HUMMUS.... but even then, that isnt the right pronunciation, rather the Americanized way... but what can you do.... its Hummos... not what most people say, "Hum-iss"... it drives me nuts....

Oh well,
