Why Does Everybody Hate The French?

Sun Feb 06, 2005 5:56 pm

Pourquoi tout le monde détestent-ils les Français?

Please be civil... It seems that everyone hates the French, many of them have never met a French person or even been to France. I know several French people and have been to France (albeit on a Canadian passport, but still most people must have rightly assumed that I'm American) and found the French to be decent people, despite my tenuous grasp on the French language. Same goes with the Germans and New Yorkers. Although, I think the nicest people I've met are still the Canadians and the Swiss.

I have heard several people say the Germans are bigger weenies than the French. Yet the French, get stuck with the nasty label.

I hear Elbonians are prone to starting stupid threads. I guess I might be a littl strange too if I lived in a country that was always covered knee-deep in mud.

What gives you the impression that "everyone hates the French"?

Some of my better trips in Europe have been to France. LeMans race was a hoot there the three times I went. Very accomodating folk.

Because mention France and people laugh "mmph...well they're French." I get the UK-France rivalry, but past that I don't understand French antagonism. There's the google for French Military Victories, the idea of the French frog, the reference "but I am le tired." I think there's generally an anti-France bias. Even my Swedish step-father has a moderate anti-French (or as he would say, socialists-this from a liberal republican swede) attitude that I don't understand.

Other countries have had the same anti-American antagonism with our classiness and politics, Germany, Canada, etc. and we don't hate those people. I'm not sure that French really hate Americans, they just hate our weird policies and cultural (or lack thereof) imperialism, and I really don't blame them. Although there is a big anti-American bias in the French media. It's a good country but I do think that Americans could stand a bit more class and a bit more cultural humility.

It shows up with all the US vs EU, Airbus/Boeing shit usually. Personally I think the French are wonderful, and their society is progressive and fair. They have fine food/fine wine/fine scenery/fine architecture/long & interesting history/their own language/fine females (Cote D'Azure anyone?) ....it's no real wonder people are bitten by the green eyed monster....

I think that Americans who hate the French secretly wish they could be more like them. And so they insult them in order to make themselves feel superior.

It's a common reaction to feeling insecure about oneself.

Because every time I hear some ridiculous anti-French rant it is coming from some disgruntled American.

I don't hate France or the French. I despise some of the attitude and unearned arrogance they display on occasion. Someone needs to tell them that Napoleon was a dictator and lost in the end.

France is a great nation that has often taken a contrarian position to its allies (NATO, the US, UK, etc) out of an apparent desire to convince itself it is in charge of everything.

I am part French and have spent more time than most non-permanent residents there, so I speak from experience when I point out that the French can be seriously rude and boorish while condemning the rest of the world as non-cultured peasants.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. At the Musee de l'Armee located at La Hotel des Invalides in Paris I was in the room with Napoleons camp bed and some of his memorabilia. A large group of NATO and Russian officers walked in and a French officer began to explain in French while a Portuguese officer translated the Russian's questions to English and a French officer translated to French. They were all able to speak English and there were officers from several nations present, but the French insisted on speaking French requiring a translator for the Russians who spoke decent English, but no French. The French allowed pride to interfere with ease and courtesy.
The other part of this was that the French Admiral who was there pointed out a very fine hat that Napoleon was perported to wear, and announced in French "This is the hat that Napoleon wore when he marched to Moscow!" with a very smug grin and air of superiority. The Russian General replied, in English (he had been speaking in Russian to keep up the Russian pride) by pointing out an old and very ratty hat in the case saying "and this must be the one he wore when we marched into Paris two years later."

The group was immediately silent, and I alone had the temerity to laugh out loud, as I was just there visiting and had nothing to do with their group. The Portuguese officer was attempting to maintain his composure as the French officers all decided it was time to visit the next room down the hall.

The point here is that the French do things sometimes to piss people off, whether they mean to or not, and can't take what they dish out. This points out a large part of Frances image problem....that they do all of those things that they rail against others for, including the US. They do not realize often how obnoxious they can be, or how duplicitous they can appear while doing this.

I love France in spite of and will continue to visit my family there, but because of the stance many there have taken against us, while continuing to carry on to their own piper doing many of the same things, albeit in smaller scale, my vacation money, my wine money, and my time will be spent elsewhere. There are plenty of beautiful European countries that do not piss so many people off the way the French do, and Italy, Spain, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Turkey, Greece and more deserve the tourist dollar/Euro as much and have as much to offer.

I think it's just people don't like the snobby attitude of Parisians more than anything else, given that much of public perception of the French comes from Paris itself.

Go outside Paris and I think the French people are quite a bit more friendly.  Smile

One more thing to add..

I have always found that the French will go the extra mile for a stranger who is trying to speak the language, and if you are able to smile, say merci, s'il vous plais, ou est la WC and je ne parle pas Francaise you'll get help.

RayC is correct that outside of Paris, just like everywhere else, you will find more relaxed country folks who are less pressed and more friendly.

Of course we dont all hate the French. They sure helped us out in the American Revolution. I have been to Paris twice and enjoyed both trips. No one seemed upset at us despite the fact that I could not speak French. I though about trying to speak a few key phrases, but heard that it is worse to get it wrong than to not try to speak it. Is that true?

Not really. The French really enjoy helping you improve your language skills. They are somewhat afraid to speak English because they don't want to get it wrong, and they have a cultural prediliction towards getting the language right.

THat said, they seem to respect it when others are making an effort to speak their langauge. Make the effort, smile, and learn to point and use your hands and tout va etre d'accord.

Hell, I can't spell in French and alot of them assume I'm French when I speak.

At least in the US, as we saw after a certain event around March 18, 2003, Americans like to hate the French because it covers up some of their own shortcomings, and insecurities. Remember "freedom fries". I rest my case.

Hating French people is just another little diversion that republicans created to divert attention from the really problem. Of course its based on long serving myths surrounding the "legendary" (and I mean that it is a legend) poor attitude of French people.

The fact is that the US feels that the French must be perpetually grateful for that whole WWII thing. The US overstayed their welcome in France and were eventually shown the door. Ever since then Americans have strived to portray French people as rude and cowardly.

I think we shouldn't waste much more time on this issue because even more important is how the Bush administration is setting its sites on Iran and the rest of the "evil" Muslim world. It's going to be an exciting year. I just hope some of us survive...

I don't know about the French, but as an American I find Americans like you who post nonsense like the above annoying. Maybe unsubstantiated views like yours is the reason why the French think that Americans are a boorish dumb lot.

As far as I'm concerned, I think the French are fantastic. They have the world's most beautiful city (Paris), some of the world's most incredible food, the best wine, the most beautiful and stylish women (if you've ever bothered to go to Paris, flybyguy, you may find out that French women don't have to be rich, to look "classy;" they just do it with style and finesse and decency.), handsome men who are wonderful lovers.  Smile

They've also built the biggest competitor (Airbus) to our largest exporter (Boeing) in only 3 decades. Maybe, that's why stupid Americans hate the French

Airplay....have you ever been to France? Do you know why the French do anything? Motivated self-interest.

No one has to strive to portray the French as rude, they just have to try and get a cab at Roissy, or check into your hotel at anything less than the Bristol. And it certainly did not start recently....the French have been the target of punditry and jokes about rudeness since before my time.

Quit trying to take this into the political realm with that crap. Or can you explain why the average British person (English, Scot, Welsh etc) feels the same about the French.

No one here said cowardly either. THe French have always been there side by side with us when war has come, with the recent exception, including right now in East Africa. The biggest problem most Americans have with them now is that they took an active role in working against us when we decided which way we had to go. We did the same back during the Suez Crisis when the French and British went into Egypt.

I hate the French because when in Paris nobody spoke English, Spanish, Italian or German to me. Parlez vou Anglais? Spagnol? Italian? Allemain (Deutsch)?

Je ne parle paz Francais.

THe SNCF employees are the rudest bastards ever. IN Narbonne one told me she didnt speak english or spanish when I went to ask her a question (she was the platform manager person).

Then, when I went to board the train she told me I couldnt board the train because it was full- in ENGLISH. She then conitnued to explain in English why I couldnt board. Needless to say I sent her to hell and back for being a (#[email protected]%#$%!#$%#$%!#$%!) .

In Narbonne nobody spoke Spanish, at the Maison de Juenes I had to communicate with my hands and drawings. At the McDonalds (Which was the only thing open for some reason) The employees did not understadn "Big Mac Value Meal" I had to point at the picture for a good 20 seconds for her to understand what I wanted.

Then, coming back to Biarritz, luckily people spoke Spanish, i boarded a train the smelled of my high school locker room (in fact I would take 6 hours in the locker room anytime over that train). I couldnt sleep, it smelled so bad. I checked all the wagons and they smelled the same. I have a written account of that ordeal. I would not recommend Biarritz- Paris on train to anyone.

I was impressed then that at the international train station, the only employees that spoke english where the Chunnel employees. Nobody in the stores understood that I wanted a vodafone recharge card (yes i know vodafone is SFR i saw the huge billboard inside the station).

I dont' think people hate French, they hate les Parisienne! There are many stories of tourists being treated bad in Paris, maybe that's why you have this sensation that people hate French. I don't think it's true though. Actually, I think more people hate Americans (for things such as "freedom fries" and throwing away French wine just because it was french! Now that was sad adn pathetic!). I personally don't hate anyone

Geeze Jaysit, you certainly take a liking to flaming people with conflagration.  Big grin

I didn't say I hated the French. I've studied the French language for 8 years and love their cuisine (a little fatty though), however I feel that some of the French antagonize Americans every chance they get. When my mom was younger she took a trip with some highschool friends to Guadeloupe, and she said it was the worst experience of her life as people were generally rude to her, possibly because of here American accent... matters were worse when she tried speaking the little French she knew.

On the other had I think we as Americans are not that friendly when it comes to tourists. In when I went back to NYC over the break, I saw a subway token booth clerk yelling at a couple of Asian tourists when she got frustrated with their lack of English skills.

So, to summarize, there are two categories of people:
those who hate the French
the rest

Among those who hate the French, there are several leagues
the ones who hate them because they do not speak English (the major league)
the ones that hate them for past historical reasons (the islanders...)
the ones that do because other do (sheep psychology)
the ones that do because someone French one day pissed them off
the (secretly) jealous
the ones that wrongly thought they could understand French after 6 years of hard schooling
the ones that heard of France for the first time from G. Bush
the ones that take a regular beating at Rugby or football (Kirk & Co)

I agree, some reasons are perfectly justifiable.  Big grin

LOL Iakabos!

Yet, people continue to flock to France in record numbers! Maybe they're just masochistic!  Big grin

Seriously though - even after accounting for my involuntary bias towards France and the French - I think it's just a combination of all that you listed. I honestly do admire the whole French thing, for the most part.

And there's much to admire in the French. Their overall contribution in nearly every field - the arts, science, gastronomy, law, technology, etc - is almost without parallel. They've come as close as anyone to finding a balance in life, which is more than most of us can claim.

I can understand, sort of, the English claiming to not like the French; they have a long, chequered past and most English have either been to France or know something about France.

The general American hatred for France though, baffles me. The vast majority have never been there, don't know anyone who ever has, haven't a clue about anything French, yet manage to somehow hate from across an ocean.

France remains a true rival - albeit much, much smaller - to total American dominance in every area. Maybe that's got something to do with it. And if their refusal to toe the line is reason enough for some to hate them, well, so be it. Especially now they've been proven right.

And if the French do or say something, it's not because they simply want to be contrarian to the American view; it is because that is what is in France's interest.

Which, as we all know, is a very American trait!  Big grin

It makes sense though - Got to France, Speak French. You go to Germany, speak German,Go to Italy, speak Italian, Go to Australia/New Zealand/USA/Canada- speak English.
Tell me again why you don't want immigrants from Mexico & the like arriving in the states and not attempting to learn English - the local language.

"I went back to NYC over the break, I saw a subway token booth clerk yelling at a couple of Asian tourists when she got frustrated with their lack of English skills." Case in point....it's the same here, and our biggest industry is tourism.

If you don't respect the people in the countries you visit enough to speak their official language/s, you may as well not go. If, like others have said, you make the effort, they will be more than happy to help you out, just because you tried. You don't have to speak the language fluently/well, just learn stuff like "I would like.../Where is.../Please/Thank you/I do not speak ..."
My French was rubbish, and I had difficulty listening to 'real life' French, because it is faster/more colloquial so it doesn't sound the way phrasebooks say it. Nevertheless I tried, and found the French the most polite/courteous people in Europe. Paris included.

Iakobos....Well, that about answers the question with all of the possible answers.

Well done. You did forget one..

the ones who are the butt of all the location jokes told by the French...

(if you are from Alabama you tell Mississippi joke, in the US they used to tell Polish jokes)

...in France the jokes are about les Belges.... sans blagues!  Wink/being sarcastic

airplay....it's just funny when someone attempts to deflect unwanted attention by redirecting it elsewhere. You ask if the average city dweller in the US can be as rude as anyone, but we were talking about the French. Just for the record it seems that the average Parisian is ruder than the average New Yorker, but thats an opinion....as valid as any other. Have I been mugged, no, most folks haven't been. So the example is spurious. I will tell you that the worst I have felt in a subway was in Paris when a group of young people, my age at the time, were making being loud and jostling us on the platform. There wasn't anyone else there and they did not stop until we uit speaking English and responded in French that further disturbance would be unwelcome and result in a call to the police. If you don't want to get mugged in Detroit stay the hell out of downtown after dark. New York is now one of the safest cities in the US.

Ian, only the French can make Belgian jokes, and we do accept it with a smile since it makes them feel better.
At the end of the day, France is Belgian's biggest market, we do not even classify it as "export".

I have serious dislikes for the French GOVERNMENT because they have clearly shown that they are no friend of the US. For example: We held talks with them about Iraq, and they went back and leaked it to Saddam. That is why we have Freedom Fries!

A monkey's ass always talks crap.

You don't have Freedom Fries though. Can you name one place in the US that actually sells them?

I've met one French fellow in person. He was nice, but he was VERY arrogant about his culture, so he fit the stereotype. He constantly would say how something is not classy, but the French equivalent is classy. He would constantly belittle Americans and the American culture, of course I will not let one person spoil the whole culture for me. But my encounter (it was 1 semester long) certainly is not helping the situation any. If I went to France I'd be wide eyed and keep my ears open. Taking in everything. Unfortunately he did not.

THe French have always been there side by side with us when war has come, with the recent exception, including right now in East Africa.

But apparently that was enough to treat the French, the Germans, the Belgians, and anyone else who wasn't for going to war in Iraq like scum of the earth, but that's life, I guess in the "you're either for us or agaisnt us" mentality in the U.S. these days.

I hate the French because when in Paris nobody spoke English, Spanish, Italian or German to me.

MIA, there's an old saying: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." In other words, it's their nation, they can speak what they want, got it?  Laugh out loud

Gentlemen, hats off, StowAway was a member of both delegations.

When reading this post, keep in mind I have never met anyone from France. All of my contact with the French is through the media.

There is a HUGE difference between arrogance and pride. The Mexicans seem proud of their culture: art, music, language but the French seem arrogant about it. The Mexicans are willing to share with you why their culture is good and learn why your culture is so good. The French seem to let you know that theirs is the only culture worth following. Plus (again, media bias) they always seem to be on strike.

I have, however, had one encounter with a family from Quebec. A friend and I tried to sit next to them on a ferry crossing from Sidney BC to Vancouver. They said something in our direction in French and moved two tables down. Because of this, I don't care for people from Quebec.

GO CANUCKS!!
You bet I'm pumped!!! I just had a green tea!!!

I've had the same experience as AA61hvy, only it was from my French professor last semester. He was a visting professor from Nantes, although he was probably 25 or 26, he acted like a grade-A asshole. He would mock everything American, from making fun of "dumb American students," making fun of our culture (everything from our patriotism to American food to the women), and he constantly made negative remarks about conservatives. Like AA61hvy's experience, he seemed to be very arrogant about French culture. That being said, despite his hatred towards American culture, I would always see him out at the bars on the weekends, basically basking in American college culture. Talk about a hypocrite. My problem is that the French believe that they are far superior to everyone.

I like France, I've been to Paris three times, and it's one of my favorite cities to visit. I don't necessarily have a problem with Parisians. I mean, it's not like New Yorkers are friendly to tourists either.

We don't hate the French in America! Who else is so easy to poke fun at?  Big grin

Jokes aside, I believe much of it stemmed from George Bush being labeled an oil-lover, I'm not sure if it came from Jacques Chirac or not, while in the meantime Chirac had a substantial illegal oil deal himself with Saddam. The pot-calling-the-kettle-black concept is probably what set off most Americans. Personally, I'm too tied up in more important matters to worry about whether the French suck or not.

I have often found my French friends and family making fun of US culture, appetites, food and women.

Usually from the booth at the local McDonalds while they are asking me to set them up with my female friends when they come over to vacation or work.

Falcon...I don't treat the French like the scum of the earth, but I will point out societal traits as quickly as anyone else will. If the trait of a particular society is obnoxious, thats not my fault.
