Do You Like Korean Food?

Mon Feb 07, 2005 6:57 pm

I was wondering what you thought of my country's delicacies such as Kimchi, Bulgogi, Pibimpap and of course the ever-present soju.
Have you ever experienced these ?

I'm sure the other Elbonian will be more than happy to answer this as my home Korean specialist.

As I am currently 'working' for a Korean company, I have to eat Korean food sometimes. I do not really know the name of what I ate, but it was actually palatable. A bit spicy for my taste, but bearable. I did not dare eat Kimchi though.

As for Soju, well. Yes, I like that. I even have a Korean coworker smuggling be Jinro !!!

Cheers,

I like Kimchi and I also have been to a Tofu House in Koreatown in LA (I believe it was called BCD Tofu House). I forgot the name of it but it was a Tofu stew with egg in it. I liked it.

I love it! If you get good KimChi it's great. Unfortunately, about all I get in Anchorage is stuff that's been mass produced and in a jar. I prefer to eat the local cuisine whenever I travel, where ever that is.

Lovely cuisine... I love Korean food, especially "bibim bop"? (I think that's how you call it) Very spicy... just the way I like it. I think I aught to head down to Korea someday and have a feeding frenzy. I'd probably get fat eating all that good food though.

I had the chance to have it only once in my life but I remember I like it.
Don't remember at all the name of what I had.
Hope to try it again...

I indeed quite like this occurrence, nothing like having a traditional bulgogi (thinly-sliced beef grilled on a hot stone) with spices, mushrooms and kimchi ! Mmmmm ! (with a lot of soju to go with it Big grin)

I would rather hack off my arm and eat that before I eat Kimchi or any other Korean food (and i was there for 13 months so I speak with knowledge). Although enough Soju in me and I might try some stuff.  Big grin

I have some friends who are Korean, and according to them, the Japanese stole their food ideas and styles when they invaded a few century's ago

I love Korean food, except for a few things from the menu. I'll be eating lots on my trip there later on this year.

I have an open mind about most foreign foods, but with Koreans eating such delicacies as Bosintang, it doesn't do much for the international marketing of your cuisine. Not much to do with the substance, but more to do with the method.  Sad

Once, in New York... A friend took me to a vegetarian Korean restaurant! It was excellent.

I don't think there's a single Korean restaurant in all of India!

Good stuff... I spent 2 weeks in Seoul with a Korean family so I got to taste some regular home cuisine aswell. I can't say that I like everything, but most of it it quite good. Was surprised to see the garlic was eaten raw by the clove!  Wow! I didn't mind, but djeez I must have smelled!
Sake, soju, whatever... I like!

Some minuses:
- Those metal chopsticks... I'm fine with the wooden or plastic ones, but these metal ones are horrible... Too thin and slippery...
- Coffee... Everybody drank instant coffee... brr... They probably don't even know what real coffee tastes like!

For the record...there is next to no wildlife in Korea...and thats becaue they eat everything.

So I take it that JCS17 is Korean, KROC?

Seriously though, there's a slow food restaurant here in Columbia called the Blue Cactus Café. The owner was stationed in Korea (although with the Army), fell in love with Korean food (and a Korean woman) and when he got out he started the restaurant, which also serves other styles of food, but Korean is the main focus of the restaurant.

http://www.bluecactuscafe.com/menu.htm to check out their menu. I LOVE their Ta Gee Bul Go Gee and the Kim Chee Fried Rice. Also, one of my best friends is Korean and his mom used to make the best Bul Go Gee as well...I'm getting hungry thinking about it.

I LOVE Korean food. I had it for my first time in December and I fell in love with it. The Bulgoki, the thin-sliced BBQ beef was to die for. And the place I went to served an appetizer which I can't figure out the name of. It was cold potatoes in a sesame oil sauce, but it was amazing. This thread is actually getting me in the mood to go get some Korean food!

Absolutely love them especially Bulgolgi, bibimbop and kimchi! There's also fried glass noodle (jap chee?) which is nothing but delicious. I usually visit the Korean restaurants around 32nd St. (between 5th and 6th Ave.) in Manhattan.

I like the Korean BBQ beef, and also bibimba and kimchee.
I remember when flying Korean Air, and I was waiting at the baggage claim at CDG....I was smelling kimchee which so many people had in their luggage!

I was wondering what you thought of my country's delicacies such as Kimchi, Bulgogi, Pibimpap and of course the ever-present soju.

First of all, I will fight you to the death on the word "delicacies"

Quite frankly, Korean food is enough to make me retch. And yes, I've tried plenty of it.

Here in Los Angeles, there are plenty of Koreans and appropriately, there is a Koreatown. It is near my university (USC).

When I first attended USC, I met a lot of Korean people and they all started taking me to eat kalbi, sundubu, kimchi, koruke and bidimbap (bap is rice, right?)

Of those, the only things that I thought were anywhere near edible were the kalbi and the koruke. The koruke was actually somewhat decent. The kalbi was alright too, but it has no culinary value.

There is actually a pretty famous korean bbq restaurant in LA that I have been dragged to several times called "Chosun Galbi" which supposedly has the best kalbi around.

But anyway, the reason why I hate korean food is because all of my Korean friends refuse to eat anything else. I'll say "ok guys, where do you want to eat" and they immediately spring to Korean food. When I tell them I'd rather have something else they refuse to go anywhere else.

What is the deal??? On one occasion I managed to get one guy to go to a Lebanese restaurant with me and he looked at the food like it was shit and refused to even touch it.

So from that point on, I started boycotting korean food.

Oh yeah and here is a picture of my dog:

How could y'all ever think of eating her?

By the way, my boycott of Korean food extends to Korean Air also.

ConcordeBoy: Thank you! I plan to post something more aviation-related soon, I've been a long time lurker here and I learned that getting flamed is quite easy, so I've chosen the food thread as a starter... I'm going for the soft approach lol...!

AirxLiban: I know what you mean, there are not too many Koreans in my town, but if you want to meet them all just go to one of the three K. restaurants we got here. My g/f says they are very picky on whatever food other than Korean...
Kimchi really smells terrible but the taste is not that bad and dog meat is not allowed by the Italian law, so i'm pretty confident i never ate anything K9  Big grin

"How could y'all ever think of eating her?"
I've yet to see a place where you can eat dog meat. Besides, they don't eat Beagles and Poodles (you're safe, 707CMF Big grin). They eat dogs similar to St. Bernards and the like. Correct me if I'm wrong.

"oh yeah, why do all korean houses smell like kimchi? and why do korean houses have two refrigerators?"
Kimchi is common in every household. Since it has a foul smell, they have two refrigerators-one for kimchi, the other for other food. That way, nothing will stink like kimchi! We have about 4 refridgerators. Two are iceboxes out on the porch during the winter (usually it's colder than the refridgerator), which is where we store fruit and kimchi (different containers, though), and two in the house (lots of food Big grin)

By the way, don't let preserved kimchi in the fridge mariniate as it could burst open from the fermantation, thus spreading the contents all over the inside of your LG fridge.
