XM Radio And Sirius

Thu Feb 10, 2005 4:26 am

Does anyone of you know if it is possible to buy a receiver from these companies and listen to them in Europe? I emailed their support and they came with the standard answer "The FCC only allows us to sell equip to be used in the USA".

Anyway do you have any experience using them in Europe?

if the sattelite footprint gets europe then you should be able to pick it up. You may need to get specialised equiptment such as a larger dishes specific LNB's etc.

http://www.lyngsat.com might be able to help you with which sattelite it is on.

No, the signal will not reach that far.

The footprint of both XM and Sirius covers the lower 48, and some of Southern Canada.

As with most satellites, they are in Low Earth Orbit (hence being called LEO Satellites), and as such, the satellites themselves are, "over the horizon" from Europe.

Thus, the footprint of the satellite transmissions do not reach anywhere near Europe - not even Greenland or Bermuda. Likewise, AK and HI are both outside the range of XM/Sirius (and DirecTV / Dish / Voom).
