Do You Leave Your PC On 24/7?

Wed Feb 16, 2005 2:47 am

I've been reading a few articles on the net recently about arguments for and against leaving your computer on all the time, and the general view is that although it costs more to have your computer running all the time, it wears components out more turning it on and off, thus meaning you spend more money on new parts.

Obviously if you use your computer as a server or something similar you don't have much choice in the matter, but what are your views on this and do you leave your computer on all the time? Personally, I leave mine on until a parent tells me not to waste so much electricity, although given the choice I would leave it on all the time, just for the convenience of being able to come back to the internet or IRC without having to boot back up again.  Laugh out loud

Cheers,
Jamie

I leave mine on all the time, but I turn the speakers and monitor off at night. The computer goes into standby after 2 hours.

I sometimes leave mine on for extended periods of time but I have a laptop and it tends to really start to heat up, so I usually will turn it off if I plan to be away for an extended period of time.

My new PC automatically goes "to sleep" after 45 minutes, so even if I do not shut it off at night, it automatically goes into "sleep mode" But I usually shut the whole thing down before I go to bed at night.

I turn this xp box off but the 2003 server and print server/hubs stay on with their lovely constatning buzzing sound.

I have left this PC on for a few days in the past put I find the memory has paged itself in and out to death and it's as slow as Gkirk. So I tend to turn it off at night now.

I leave mine on all the time. Especially when I'm away from my flat for a few days.

I always remotely log into it when I'm away using rdesktop to read my emails, look at files, listen to music etc.

I switch it on when I come from work and I switch it of when I am going to bed although I am not sitting all the time in front of it, from time to time I take a look in my eMail mailbox, on the A.net forums or if music downloads are finished. I have an DSL flatrate and of course I want to use it as much as possible.

I always leave mine on (its a lappie) but b4 i go to bed i put it into hibernation mode, that way it basically shuts the thing down and doesn't produce alot of heat. If im gonna be away for the night i'll turn it off altogether just for peace of mind while i'm away. Last night i was heading downtown and the power went out in this area, so i drove straight back to unplug it coz i don't have a surge protector!

I live on solar power and watch power usage very carefully. Recently I built a new box to use as a Digital Video Recorder(Tivo) It is amazing how much more power the newer chips use. I can't use the thing as its meant. Even in standby they are sucking power. More than 2x the older chips(P-1).

I have had my computer on for 5 days. No problem to it.

My moms computer at work (she is a programmer) is on 24/7/365. Technically speaking if your computer has enough fans to keep it below the 100C mark its safer to leave it on. Regular operation does not put stress on the computer or the CPU/RAM.

This is how servers are able to work for so long. A CPU that is low temp(Operathon/xeon) can run for years without a problem.

I have enven had an old P2 run as a firewall non-stop for 6 months but then it just died due to the power supply.

Aside from heat, another thing to look out for is dust.
If you leave it on 24/7, crack it open every few months and blow out the dust with compressed air. I have a 486 running NT4 that acts as the PDC of my home network. The only time it's been down in the last 6 years is for cleaning. I didn't bother to do it to my flight sim pc and had to change out the power supply after about a year.

Depends, if I having it run in Server 2003 I probally leave everything on. If im just using it normally I leave it on all day, but when I leave for extended periods of time I switch off just the one powerstrip that I plug in my switches, hubs, wall mounted jacks, modems and routers into. Same thing when I go to bed, theres no way I could sleep with all the fans and blinking lights on my network stuff.

Of course I leave it on all the time! How else would I make it to the top of the chat list?  Insane The rest of you should turn those bloody things off so I can be on top!

Yup, my laptop stays on 24/7. However, it goes into standby mode after 30 minutes. It only gets switched off when I'm carrying it.

There are arguments for and against turning it off. I find that if you turn it off it gives windows a chance to start from new again each day.
I come home around 6;30pm and then turn it off around 10:30pm, I am not on the computer the whole time but can check it whenever I want. During the weekends then it will be on from when I get up until to go to bed.

I put it into standby mode at night and when at work, just saves the hassle of loading up, but if im away for a few days, will turn it off altogether

I leave it on throughout the day from when I get home from college (2pm, ish) 'til I go to bed, around midnight. Though when I'm at home all day it's on through out the day. I very rarely leave it on during the night.

Mine is the server of the house and I leave it on 24/7 because my housemates need the internet during the night too. Apart from a few restarts every month I never turn it off unless I go back home for holidays.
