The Single Season Home Run Record

Tue Feb 22, 2005 12:55 am

So in your opinion, who is the real holder of the single season home run record? In my eyes, Roger Maris is still the man. I don't think Mark McGwire or Barry Bonds deserve it, or if they do, then we should do to them what they did to Roger - use the asterisk. As far as I am concerned, Big Mac and Barry don't deserve it because they juiced. I guess the argument can be made that until proven otherwise, Bonds holds the record, but I don't think it is any secret he juiced. Plus, he is just a pompas prick. I guess when it comes to baseball I'm an old school guy. Just interested in some opinions.

I'm an old school guy as well, but there are a couple of unfortunate facts of life:

1) the MLB will never put an asterisk beside the record, no matter if Big Mac has it, or Bones, or whoever. It opens too big of a Pandora's Box for other records that might or might not be tainted.
2) until the MLB comes up with an all-inclusive and enforceable drug and steroid policy, juicing, etc. will continue to go on.

Roger Maris, Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Mickey Mantle, Jackie Robinson, Cal Ripken, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, etc.. These Major League Baseball players from the past were truly special. Today, MLB players like Bonds, Giambi, McGwire, Canseco & others, tarnish true on-field talent.

I have always been a Boston Red Sox fan. I remember 1975, 1986 & 2004. The 1946 Red Sox team was amazing! So happy to have witnessed a Red Sox World Series victory. I love Major & Minor League Baseball. I can't wait for the 2005 MLB season.

I do not want Hank Aaron's Home Run record to be broken by Steroid-injected MLB players. What Hank Aaron accomplished on the field was amazing! He accomplished MLB greatness during a very turbulent fight for Racial Equality in US History. He is my favorite MLB player. Ted Williams is my second.

Long live "Hammerin' Hank!"
