MAC Or PC

Tue Feb 22, 2005 8:19 am

I'd love to find out how many A.netters are actually using a MAC. Guess its a minority thought I've always wondered how much of a minority or who knows, it may be a majority

Come on... we´ve already got that other can of worms open at the same time... ("Religion") You can´t just go and open this one in addition!  Wink/being sarcastic

G5 Dual 2GHz here.

Primarily used for software development (Linux / Windows / embedded / server applications ...).

That it´s fun to use for everything else as well doesn´t exactly hurt, of course...  Big thumbs up

By the way... it´s "Mac", short for "Macintosh" (originally named after the kind of edible apple). It´s not an acronym like "PC".

Another Mac user here. G5 dual 1.8GHz and G3 iBook 500MHz.

I have a PC as well (eMachines T3065/Athlon XP 3000+) that dual boots Gentoo Linux and Windows XP Home, but it's powered off most of the time.

Well I've had several macs, but the one that I love and am typing on right now is a G4 PowerBook 15" with a 1.33 GHz processor, I'm planning on upgrading the RAM though, and that should make it even better.

I am able to work with windows but I prefer by fare a Mac. I had one since I was a teenager. No I use a rather old G4 Titanium Power Book and I am very satisfied with the OS X.

I use both. I have a G4 Power Mac 450mhz, Athlon 2800XP PC Tower & IBM Thinkpad R40 1.3ghz Intel Centrino. I primarily use my Mac for Desktop Publishing (Quark, PhotoShop, Page Maker) & Pro Tools. I know, my G4 is a bit slower & out of date. But I am able to use Panther, without any glitches. I really like OS X!

I also have a G3 333mhz iMac (Tangerine), which is nearing the end. It works fine with Mac OS 9, but too unstable with OS X. SDRAM is maxed out @ 192mb.

Actually, neither--I work on Linux.

But boy, the G5 is cool, and if I could justify having another computer at the moment I would probably bite the bullet. I miss being a Mac person.  Sad

I'm on a Mac -- just a simple iMac desktop, but I've got an iBook too. They're both pretty old by computer standards, but still run well with OSX. Having worked extensively in the PC environment, I wouldn't go back to Windows if you paid me. It's a godawful platform, unreliable as hell, and subject to all manner of viruses and worms etc. I'll get a new more powerful Mac next time I need to upgrade.

Using both ...

Athlon XP2500+, P4-1800, P4-2000, Dell Inspiron 4150 notebook, iBook G3-800.

Each platform has it's upsides and it's downsides ... though I still catch myself preferring the x86 platform  Smile

In addition to my Dull Aerospace Laptop, that stays powered off, I voluntarily operate an iMac G4 800mhz, the original one with the superdrive. I also use my newest toy, a 12" Powerbook G4 1.5ghz. I thought it would be tough to find a better computer than my iMac, but this PB is a close contender. Without considering my other family member's macs.

Curious as how you managed to net a copy of a beta prototype with limited release?

I use a Dell 8100 (P-4) for nearly everything, but I have used a Mac for GarageBand. That is a slick peice of software, I am strongly considering a Mac next time I need to buy a computer.

I just got a New Powerbook G4 1.67 ghz with Superdrive and I'm loving every minute of it. Before that I had the 1.5 ghz Powerbook Superdrive...before that I had a Windows machine. I am NEVER, EVER looking back. Apple just makes computing easy, and hassle free. If it weren't for all you damn Windows users, I wouldn't even have to install Anti-Virus protection...hey I'm helping you guys out by having it.

174th, did you go with the 15" or 17"? I would have picked up the .67 if I could, but the 12" with Superdrive tops off at .5. I will still be happy with this one as long as I have it. But the day the PowerBook G5 is released, this machine will be moving to a new owner  Big thumbs up.

I'm a happy Mac convert, changed over last year. Not a religious Mac user, but wouldn't change back to Windows on my own will now.

No DeskPilot. I have to install it because if I get a virus from a Windoes user lets say in an email, I won't really have a clue because my machine won't be harmed by it. Lets say I now forward that same email to another Windows user. They will open it up and now their machine will be infected because of me. See how it works.

Also, I had the 15'' 1.5 before, and got the 15'' 1.67 now.

Only if they are complete idiots and actually run the file. It also requires you forward the e-mail.

PPGMD,
I'm not here to argue, but it's the only reason why I have to have anti-virus software on my machine. It's nice to know you guys know how to use a computer, however many people don't.

I have a proxy server filtering content to the users, it filters out viruses, and spyware. I have spam, and virus filtering on my Exchange server. Along with other security measures, I simply don't have an issue with it because my users can't screw anything up too badly.

If they do, I grab their files, and reghost their machine.

If you connect to the internet, even on a dial-up, you need a firewall or you are at risk.
