Another oldtimer, my 4 year anniversary is coming up on March 20th.

I sometimes wish someone would start up an innuendo thread for old times sake. Just as long as it would follow the tradition of not having [email protected]LHR's name as part of the thread title.

I'm one more of those freeloaders. I had known this site for about a year and a half before I got over my "I don't join internet forums" stance and finally got my username. Can't say I regret it; however the a.net forums still are the only ones I visit regularly!

Though my joining date shows '00' , I believe it was actually '99'. I was once extremely active in the photo section but too many swelled heads over there, so I now prefer to hang out in the AV section.

I joined in 2001 and will mark my 4th year here in Sept. I am also the mod with the lowest seniority (site membership seniority) and I believe I am the second oldest mod (as in old geeezer age)

Now will one of the old timers start an Innuendo thread before I have to go to Denny's for my Senior Grand Slam breakfast...

... Ok I'm 42 so I still have to wait 13 years for the Senior Grand Slam but around here I might as well be 70 compared to all the young whipper-snappers running around here

Let's see...

I remember when you didn't have to register at all to post on the forums.

I remember when there were no forums.

I remember Airliners.net before it was Airliners.net.

I remember IRC... how can I forget that, since I was an op in three different incarnations of it.

Joined 27 October 2000, just after the Sydney Olympics had finished.

We had arrived back from a RTW trip (that included 5 days at EAA Airventure Oshkosh  Smile ) in September just before the Games started and I thought I would post a bit of a Trip Report instead of just browsing the photos as I had been doing. Although I soon realised that nothing I posted would ever match the likes of fellow PER-SIN commuter SingaporeAir - now he had flair (or is that flare?). I guess his student days are over and he has got a life because we are no longer treated to his entertaining reports.

Still occasionally post when the mood takes me on Non Av - although I seem to have got over baiting neo-con US of Americans lately.

Don't see much point of the Respect Rating either - rating of actual threads using the star system was better. Anyway half of my respected user list has gone, e.g. BrissieLions (Scotty), et al.

So I'm in my fifth year as an A.netter which means I'm grandfathered into the forums at no charge - Thanks Johan.

March 27th I will be posting here five years, man time is really going by quick!.. When I first started visiting I was just coming by to browse the photo database, after a year or two I signed up to join the discourse.

When I joined I was in College and I would post in between classes (or when I should have been studying), now I look foward to reading when I get home from work to see if anything big has been announced or "rumored" to be announced.

That "big WN announcement Tuesday" thread was a big tease.

I enjoy reading about new developments (aircraft orders, new routes, speculate about takeovers etc..) over the years.

I joined in March 2001, it will be 4 years for me in 2 weeks time (19th). Initially i came for the photo's but then decided to participate in discussions. But the photo database is the numero uno reason for coming to Airliners.net. The quality of the photos here alone is worth the subscription fee.

OK, i have a question. For many of you from 1999 or 2000, you say it was free to join. When did it change so that you had to pay? This is the best $25 i have ever spent!!!

Joined 17 Sep 2001, just days after the tragedy. I started visiting in 1999 off of a link from the FAR airport website. Read the forums and browsed the pictures for a couple of years, then joined for the emotional discussions just after 9/11.

I've never been that active and still have never even started a thread, but I visit all of the time. chRis

I'm glad you like it! Access to the discussion forum used to be free and when the site started getting thousands of members back in the late 90's, problems started to emerge. We got a group of teenaged troublemakers, who spent their pastime causing troubles in the forum in a variety of ways. They disrupted serious discussions with crap posts, flooded the forum with topics like "Fuck fuck fuck" and similar. I was the only moderator back then and naturally I kicked their asses out. The problem was they simply got back in by registering a new username. I tried most everything (including banning by IP) but to no avail. In the end my choice was either to close the forum permanently or start to charge for the service. I chose the latter.

These days things are a whole lot better. I know many of you are against paying for something like access to a discussion forum but it was the only way to keep the quality up. By paying, you are also supporting the site and that is very much appreciated.

Oh, and I can confirm that Sabena332 was the very first First Class Member  smirk

Johan

I do actually think that was a good idea. Even though people moan about having to pay, they still pay it for a reason, because there is obviously something they like/appreciate on this site.
