The Joys Of Living In Minnesota (pics)

Sat Mar 19, 2005 11:06 am

We all thought spring was in the air and summer next in line, but no, this is Minnesota. This is what we had by the end of today (haven't seen any snow for a few weeks, and not this much all winter).

Lovely aint it? Anybody else hit by this snow storm that has any pics?

Nope! All I have are some wet socks and no desire to go outside.

I am really looking forward to waking up at 5:00AM and heading down to MIA for the weekend though. sun

You know, I live in Ortonville (small town in West Central MN) and we didn't get a single snowflake.

We were originally supposed to get 6-9 inches, but it ended up going south.

The ground is brown here!!!

Beefer, yeah, I live outside Mankato. They closed Hwy60 from Madelia to Worthington, as well as I90 from Worthington to Blue Earth. Bunch of schools cancelled and stuff. Too bad I have spring break, or my classes probably would have cancelled too, even though MSU cancels a lot later than high schools and elementary schools. It's still snowing though, and all the snow I shoveled just a few hours ago, is now being replaced...

Exactely two years ago to the date Denver was digging out of a storm the left a little bit less than 3 feet of snow throughout the city.

This was my car. The snow drifting around was 8 feet in some places:

This was the parking lot of my apartment complex:

I'm sure the folks in Denver remember this storm very well!

I arrived from EYW to the wonderful storm this afternoon. I don't know if I am "lucky" or not to have been given one of the arrival slots this evening since so many flights were cancelled.

As I got off the train at the station, there was about six inches of snow on the platform and it was enough to stop my suitcase from rolling. I miss the ocean and the sun  Sad

I'd love to live in Minnesota.
I would like to live in Duluth or along the coast just north of Duluth.
That would be the perfect place for me. Huge body of water, hills, forest, 4 intense seasons, year around outdoor activity, close to Canada, low cost of living, lots of down to earth people and very Democratic.
The only thing that would bother me is lack of diversity. Minneapolis has lots of diversity but doesn't have the natural beauty of Duluth.

Wow, that brings back memories.

'Fly - that's the area I'm from - just across the border in Thunder Bay, Ontario. It really is a very beautiful area. There's nothing prettier than Lake Superior on a sunny day. And after it snows, when it's -30 and clear, the fresh snow really is gorgeous.

That being said, I'd never go back.  Smile The economy there really sucks, and it's a very inward-looking society.

Nope - just that there's an inflated sense of importance, because a lot of people haven't seen anything else in their lives. They get this idea that Thunder Bay is an important place in the world, and lots of people know where it is. Canadians all know where it is because they see it on the weather broadcasts - does anyone else outside of the northern US know about it? Not really.

As an example, after 9/11 there were a bunch of articles in the Thunder Bay media about how Thunder Bay could be an Al Qaida target because of the grain elevators in the harbour - "the world's largest supply of food in one place"!! I am really sure that somewhere over in Afghanistan Osama bin Laden is feverishly plotting a terrorist attack against Thunder Bay. I think even city council bought into this one and security measures were discussed for some time.
But that was when I ruled the world

Small towns across American were the most paranoid. Small towns tend to be very paranoid societies. It gets much worse in the South.

Ah Yes the snow on Friday was so......a pain in my ass!!! We sent 9 planes to FAR. We ended up working an 12 hour day. But you know what we have had a mild winter so I guess I shouldn't complain. But wait but that's what we in Mn do best. Wink

It was a hard day for all of us at SY. We all pitched in and did what we do best and stayed on duty until all the flights came in and got the job done. I felt sorry for the crews who had to wait for their flights. Up to the point when a F/A asked if we were going to give them breakfast for the late return flights. The reply was lady we have been out here waiting for you since 1230 pm, and its now 1000pm what do you think????

My hat is off to all of our staff who worked this weekend, wow. We did good.

StevenUHL777,

You were probably thinking of Georgian Bay, which is the Easternmost part of Lake Huron. It's a big cottage/vacation area.

KaiGwyer - we used to have Nordic events in Thunder Bay. They had the World Nordic Games there around 1995, I think. We had this big beautiful ski jumping facility, but the government shut it down and now it's just sitting there rotting. Thunder Bay used to be on the CBC several weekends in winter showing ski jumping events, when Matti Nykanen and Horst Buleau were the champs. Now we have no ski jumping facility, and no good Canadian ski jumpers. But they do not have World Cup events there. The alpine skiing isn't to that standard.

Note how I can't quite disconnect from my TBay connection - sometimes it's "we have", other times it's "they have". Once a Thunder Babe, always a Thunder Babe.  Smile

Here's a map showing where it is. I agree that Steven was thinking of Georgian Bay.
