Getting Sucked In While Flushing The Plane Toilet?

Fri Mar 25, 2005 1:29 am

Hi there

This might seem a weird post but it could at least clarify a story I heard around 10 years ago

It was about a woman on an AirFrance flight that was sucked in by the plane's toilet when she flushed the seat. Her bottom got stuck to the plane seat and only firemen on the ground could free her it. This was a long time ago and I don't know if the story is real or made up...
however...
When I fly and I flush the toilet ,everything gets sucked up at very high speed since the flushing pressure is so big. Thus if the woman was still sitting and flushed the toilet, there could be a possibility that the flushing pressure sucked her bottom which got stuck to the toilet seat

Have you ever heard of anything such occuring

Regards,
BM

This myth was disproven on the show "Mythbusters" that's on here in the U.S. They discovered that (A) the suction isn't strong enough to hold someone on the seat and (B) the opening that's always on the front of toliet seats...that prevents a suction in the first place.

We have had some fun on the vacuum flush systems..we would put toilet paper in the toilet, roll it out to the back of the plane, then flush and watch it fly through the cabin.

I am sure you mean't " FLUSHING " the toilet, because if you think about it, you have to " FLASH " a toilet everytime you use it.
I think this is a an urban myth. And yes the Mythbusters tried to do it under various circumstance without luck. Myth busted.

So, what I'd like to know is what were the FA's doing to not see what you were doing while you were running down the cabin with a roll of TP and letting it fly through the air.

You misquoted. NWAFA is the one that said it, and clearly is an FA.

If you're interested, the "suction bottom" thing can happen on certain types of yacht loos as they don't all have a cut out on the rim.

Very handy in rough weather!!!!

I lost an airport badge in the aircraft toilet once. It fell in the toilet, and while flushing, I watched in awe as it vanished into the clear blue (wow, that came out by accident!!!). It turned into the longest flight, as I tried a thousand times in my head how I was going to explain that to my supervisor. I came up with a dramatic story, and needless to say I spent $25.00 for a replacement badge. I thought the picture on the badge was crappy anyways. (I did it again!!!)

seriously, if you read a trip report on THY posted here at a stop in BKK I think the writer said that the FAs forbid pax to use the toilets and said that if they do they may get their bottoms sucked in (or stuck i guess in the toilet) !!!!

Its not an urban legend at all, and has happened before!

OSLO, Norway -- A female passenger on a Scandanavian Airways flight has filed a complaint to the airline after she was stuck to the plane's toilet for two hours.

I am suing UA for it then! I ate a sandwich once on a UA flight. After an hour, I had no choice but to run for the bathroom.

I was stuck on the toilet for an hour and a half. It was horrible. I will never be the same again! I am suing for millions!

When I first read the headline for the thread, I found it quite humorous to think of something getting "sucked in" while "flashing" the toilet. I might flash a toilet if I were really drunk i guess.

Even if this was true, why would you flush the toilet before getting off from it?
Plane toilets are small which makes hard to flush while still sitting on it.

After carefully considering all the responses above, I conclude that people have found something about an Air France flight which doesn't suck.

I have no idea about the aforementioned story. Sounds funny though!  Smile

What I will say is that I absolutely hate standing in the bathroom whilst flushing the toilet on an aircraft! I usually do my business, wash hands, apply moisturiser, spray with deodorant and aftershave, brush teeth etc, then once I'm done I will unlock the door open it slightly then reach for the flusher and run out of the door as soon as I start to hear it gurgle and spit!  Sad

Cheers,

Is that everytime you go to the loo? Wow!  Wink

I agree with you on the opening the door thing. Well I used to do it anyway before I figured out if I opened my mouth a bit, my ears wouldn't pop. Once years ago I got scared of the loo, ran out and slammed the door into the person waiting in line, oops!

I can asssure you it is not an urban myth, it can happen. If you sit, seal the bowl and flush, then you may be in trouble. I read the actual file on one case a few years ago, and remember the words 'severe internal bleeding'.

possibly with the seat up... and someone with a big enough ass that creates a perfect seal... tho i must agree i dont think the suction is THAT good to cause severe damage to someone.

Do people actually lift the toilet seat? I sometimes notice piss on the seat. Either someone was in there while we hit turbulance, someone has bad aim or someone is a jackass.

It is not funny and it is not an urban myth, and it can often times involve children. I have a very good friend who is a surgeon, and he had to treat and comfort a young girl on a transatlantic flight who for some reason sat on the bowl and did not put the seat down. She flushed the toilet and became stuck and was only able to be released once they landed and were able to disconnect the system. She suffered internal bleeding and likely will not be able to ever have children, which is quite a tragic result for someone taking their first flight.

What may be common sense to seasoned travellers is not common sense to children, and in other cases could just be a freak accident where an adult for whatever reason gets stuck.

So yeah, guys, all of you may be wise enough to know to stand up and flush, but it does happen and it is not funny.

Which one? "Flashing" the toilet or having the toilet suck an unraveled roll of toilet paper that extends throughout the cabin?  Wink
