Sirius Or XM?

Mon Mar 28, 2005 3:32 pm

The title is pretty self-explanitory. I was wanting some feedback on the two satillite radio providers from any members that have it. I have to replace my head unit in my car and since radio in St. Louis sucks I figured it would be a perfect excuse to get a satillite service. Thanks!

Kinda depends on what you like to listen to. Take a look at the channel lineup for both, then make your decision. Pricewise and coverage wise I believe they are pretty much the same.

I didn't think STL radio was all that bad. Then again I do live in Crapchester.

I'd go for Sirius. Not only with they have Howard Stern, but they are the up and coming sat. station. Signing NASCAR, MLB, NFL ect. on top of the alrady impressive musical channels is only going to keep pushing them over the top.

Sirius......that is what I have in my car....mine was factory installed. However, I doubt there really is much of a difference between the two. They are direct competitors so I think they are probably most likely the same...I can only recommend Sirius because that is what I have.......sat radio rocks!

NASCAR pushed it over the top for you, KROC? I knew it. I'll go warm up your mechanical bull.

I'd say neither. I used XM several times in rental cars and I'm just not sold on the product of satellite radio. Don't get me wrong, I love the diversity of content but the constant loss of signal when you go under an overpass or drive in a downtown area is very annoying.

I have XM in my car and I'm thinking about switching over to Sirius. If your a big sports fan you probably want Sirius, since all XM has right now are NASCAR, Big Ten college sports, and the ACC.

I have Sirius in my car...can't complain. There is always music on to listen to and if I like a specific band I can put it in my memory and if its on the radio at all, it will show up and with a push of a button I'm listening to it!

I also think they have some awesome talk radio and their sports (Atlanta's moring sports talk show! Big grin) coverage is awesome!

One thing: Will I be able to hear MLB on my Sirius? I can't live without baseball!

I think XM might have grabbed MLB, see this: http://www.xmradio.com/programming/channel_page.jsp?ch=175

KROC... You took NASCAR over baseball? XM has baseball, that is why I am thinking about going that way. My dad got Sirius, I have used it for a while and I Do like it but I don't give a shit about Football, NASCAR and especially some moron who thinks naked porn stars on a RADIO show is worth listening to.

MLB is (right now) on XM for many years to come.

I have XM and really like it -- I think they have better technology than Sirius, and some excellent music channels. Wish they had the World Radio Network like Sirius, though...

I got Sirius last Fall. I love it. The music channels are great plus many are commercial-free. However, you have to pay a bit more for no commercials as opposed to XM which has commercials on more of its stations and makes money that way.

I got Sirius before XM got MLB so I'm kinda pissed that I don't have all the MLB games, but oh well. I've still got baseball on ESPN on Sunday nights so thats good.

I love how i can get so many different radio stations that will come in w/ good clarity. Living in little Ithaca, New York, doesn't give one a very good selection of radio stations.

You'll probably like either company. Each one's differences aren't great, but can make the difference when it comes to making a decision.

I have XM radio, bought it just before Stern made his announcement otherwise I might have bought Sirius.

XM has Major League Baseball, lots of games to choose from.

There were some stories in the business pages a few weeks ago that Sirius and XM were in merger talks, that would be the best thing that could happen for both companie's subscribers.

XM customers could listen to Stern, and Sirius customers could listen to Major League Baseball.

I have XM.

The traffic and weather on XM trounces Sirus badly, as does XM's technology. I also listen to mostly dance music and the XM lineup is comparable to Sirius.

That being said, if you're a Stern fan, well, there you go.

I also live in DC, from whence XM is programmed, and like to hear my local talent represented on a national scale.

I would venture to say that 99% of XM is commercial-free. I have XM in my car and love it. I rented a car with Sirius, and it was OK but some of the announcers were to talkative and inane (esp. on Channel 1). Either is 1000% better than over-the-air radio.

In terms of sports, if you like MLB, Pac 10/ACC/Big 10, and NASCAR (which is on XM, not Sirius, by the way) go with XM. If you like NFL, NBA, and NHL (if that ever comes back, go with Sirius.

But if music is your thing, it's a toss-up. Edmunds.com had a good comparison of both services a few months ago, and it is probably still on their website.

XM also has local traffic & weather if you live in a major city.

Misinformation abounds, as always.

XM has MLB and NASCAR; Sirius has NFL.

XM has a lesser digital compression ratio and noticeably, "deeper" sound quality on quality receivers (Polk, etc.). This is directly proportional to the number of channels on the transponders. More channels = more compression = lesser sound quality.

Sirius has more music channels overall; XM has local traffic information.

XM is 100% commercial-free (as is Sirius) on the MUSIC channels; however, other channels (CNN/HLN, BBC, NASCAR, etc.) all have commercials, as on Sirius.

Since I didn't give a shit about NASCAR or the NFL I apologize for not knowing which Sat radio provider had what.
