Bush And Castro At The Pope's Funeral

Thu Apr 07, 2005 3:59 pm

On cnn.com there was a list of the world leaders that would be attending the Pope's funeral. On the list were Presidents Bush, 1 and 2, ex-President Clinton, Secretary of State Rice, PM Blair, Prince Charles, and much to my surprise so was good old Fidel Castro. When was the last time that a sitting American President and Castro were in the same room?

Any humerous scenarios/conversations that you could invision between the two should they run into eachother?

I can just imagine Bush and Castro sitting across the aisle from eachother with Bush pouting and Castro chuckling a little at him (for history's sake, not because of the Pope).

Cheers,

I can't wait to see the photos... It's about time, maybe it'll prompt the embargo to be relaxed.

Castro will make a joke about GWB's weight. He will then go purge and later that day delcare war on Cuba.

What would be funnier is if Castro and Bush were to be seated next to one another.

I think there might be a chance for talks on the side. I wouldn´t be surprised if some common sense would derive of it.

I thought from news reports earlier this week that Castro wasn't going to the funeral service, but had attended a Catholic service at the main Cathredial in Havana. I wonder what changed his mind. I have heard that there will be a representitive of the Iranian government, one that USA Bush called part of the 'axis of evil'. It will be interesting as to how these representives of or heads of state will seated. It will probably be one of the largest single gatherings of them ever and a huge security risk. I hope all goes well.
There probably won't be much time for meetings by various leaders due to the security and time issues, especially by Bush, but others may meet going to/from Rome.

That's for sure...

This is the list of all the Official national delegations : http://www.corriere.it/Primo_Piano/C...005/04_Aprile/07/delegazioni.shtml

I too hope that everything goes well....It sure is a very hard challange for Walter Veltroni (Mayor of Roma) 4 million people + 200 Head of State and Officials.....

It is surprising how many non-christian and non-catholic heads of state or representants of other religions are coming.

I agree.
Bush is part of a flock of Christian extremist that don't like Catholics and think that Catholics don't go to heaven.

Bush is probably the most hated man at this funeral.

Correct. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4411773.stm
Cuba's National Assembly President Ricardo Alarcon will head his country's delegation to the Papal funeral at the Vatican on Friday.
Castro won't be attending.

Actually, Bush may have little personal animosities toward Castro. It is Cuban-Americans that are responsible for the current suffering of the Cuban people, but blame it on Castro. They are so angry that their heredetary land-holdings were redistributed after Batista, that they attempt to punish Castro through economic sanctions. However, it obviously doesn't harm him since he made it to Forbes list of wealthiest rulers.

Before anyone flames me on this, let me be the first to say that we intimately deal with China (a Communist Dictatorship) and contribute billions daily to their economy even as they point their many, many nuclear weapons at us.

I feel that the political sway of Cuban Americans in Washington keeps Cuba in the sorry state that it is in, irregardless of Castro's doing. I think had Cuban-Americans treated Cuba like America does China, then people over there would look favorably upon America and democracy (and capitalism) would come much sooner.

I am surprised myself at some of the Countries that have sent delegations. This is indicative of the magnitude of influence the Pope had on the world, Catholic and non-Catholic. Looking at the delegation list, his influence very much surprised me.

In all likelihood, the leaders of nations hostile to each other will be respectably positioned away from each other, to include locations and timing of ingress and egress, so it's a total non-issue. The art of diplomacy at its finest.

I had discussions on another list with some American Evangelical Christian fundamentalists, who denied that Roman-Catholics were Christians. For them they were praying to idols.

And by that theory that Bush is an evengelical, are we to believe that he believes Catholics go to hell?

His personal statements say the opposite.

Matching pairs:

Bill (William Jefferson Clinton) and Charlie (Prince of Wales)
they could discuss their respective experiences and have a good laugh at the merits of their respective lovers

Fidel (if he had been there) and Lech (Walezsa)
they would have shared their flasks of rum and vodka, both would have a flashing red nose at the end of the service

Christodoulos (head of the Greek Orthodox church and to his neck in drug related scandals...among others) and Francisco Santos (VP Colombia)
sure they could make a good deal

Silvan Shalom and Mohamad Khatami
they could compare their nuclear progress

Koffi (Annan) and Silvio (Berlusconi)
the first could learn a few useful tricks from the latter

Viktor (Yuschenko) and Joseph "sweet skin" Kabila (son of the self-appointed President of the absolutely Democratic Congo and himself a President ad genetics)
good advices on healthy diets

Bob (Mugabe) and Tony (Blair)
entertainment in perspective

Le grand Jacques (Chirac) and Condo (leeza Rice)
JC knows quite a few salacious stories, she would turn pink and feel flattered

I do not think Fidel is going to the funeral. BBC says it is Ricardo Alarcon that will be representing Cuba.

Let's put this argument to rest, guys. Not every evangelical Protestant Christian thinks that Catholic Christians are going to hell, and not every Catholic Christian thinks that Protestant Christians are going to hell.

Besides, I thought this thread was about Bush and Castro both being at Pope John Paul II's funeral.
